Abstract

Kampung Admiralty, a pioneering mixed-use development in Singapore, exemplifies urban architecture


responding to climate change. Designed by WOHA Architects, it showcases sustainable design strategies such as
green terraces, passive cooling, and integrated living, aligned with SDG-13. The building minimizes energy usage
and environmental impact while fostering community wellbeing, offering a replicable model for climate-
conscious urban development

1. INTRODUCTION
SDG-13 urges the world to “Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.” In dense urban
settings like Singapore, buildings are both contributors to and solutions for climate resilience. Kampung
Admiralty, completed in 2017, is Singapore’s first integrated public development for seniors that combines
healthcare, housing, and retail within a compact footprint. It is a flagship model of how architectural design can
adapt to and mitigate climate change effects..

1.1 Sustainable Design Strategies in Kampung Admiralty

Sustainable Design Strategies in Kampung Admiralty

The scheme provides labor for:

• Land development
• Farm pond construction
• Drainage repair
• Compost pit installation
• Desilting of irrigation tanks

These activities enhance soil health, increase irrigation efficiency, and restore cultivable land, all of which
directly support Target 2.3 (doubling productivity) and Target 2.4 (resilient, climate-smart agriculture).

2. ARCHITECTURAL APPROACH & CLIMATE IMPACT

WOHA Architects employed a “vertical village” concept. Lower levels host community plazas and food courts;
mid-levels house clinics and parks; the topmost levels are for residential units. This reduces the building footprint
and promotes energy efficiency.

• Energy Use: The project consumes up to 30% less energy than conventional developments.
• Certifications: It received the BCA Green Mark Platinum award for environmental excellence.
• Community Integration: Seniors can access daily needs without travel, reducing transport emissions.

3.CONCLUSION
Kampung Admiralty is more than just a building—it is a climate action prototype. Through thoughtful
architecture, it demonstrates how built environments can mitigate climate effects while enhancing quality of life.
As cities worldwide face increasing climate risks, such models of integrated, green, and socially inclusive
urbanism are vital to achieving SDG-13.
