Apr. 21, 2021 AI Act proposed
The EU Commission proposes the act to
ensure that AI systems are safe and
transparent for users in the EU.
Dec. 6, 2022 AI Act Council position adopted
The Council approves its “general approach”
to the AI Act, ensuring the safety of AI
systems and that they respect existing laws
on fundamental rights and Union values.
June 2024 AI Act trilogue negotiations started
Although the council agreed on a general approach
to the law, there are still many finer points of the
legislation that need to be ironed out.
Dec. 8, 2024 AI Act provisional agreement reached
Although certain member states raised
concerns about the limitations placed on
powerful AI models, the EU commission
reached a compromise and agreed on a
tiered regulatory approach to these systems.
Feb. 23, 2024 European Parliament Committees
endorse AI Act
The Committee of Permanent
Representatives voted to endorse the
political agreement reached in December.
Mar. 13, 2024 Parliament voted to endorse
the EU AI Act
The AI Act is endorsed with 523 in favor,
46 against, and 49 abstentions.
May 21, 2024 Council of the EU approved the AI Act
After years of negotiating, the Council
officially approves the EU AI Act to be
entered into the EU's Official Journal.
