I. COURSE OVERVIEW:
The Constitution of India is the supreme law of India. The document lays down the framework that demarcates
fundamental political code, structure, procedures, powers, and duties of government institutions and sets out
fundamental rights, directive principles, and the duties of citizens. It is the longest written constitution of any
country on earth.
II. COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The students will try to learn:
I. The need for constitution.
II. The fundamental duties and rights of the citizens of India.
III. The role and amendments of constitution in a democratic society.
IV. The directive principles of state policy and their significance.
V. The key features of the constitution, union government and state government.
MODULE-I HISTORY OF MAKING OF THE INDIAN CONSTITUTION
History of Making of the Indian Constitution: Introduction to the constitution of India, the making of the
constitution and salient features of the constitution.
MODULE-II PHILOSOPHY OF THE INDIAN CONSTITUTION
Philosophy of the Indian Constitution: Preamble Salient Features, Contours of Constitutional Rights & Duties:
Fundamental Rights, Right to Equality, Right to Freedom, Right against Exploitation, Right to Freedom of
Religion, Cultural and Educational Rights, Right to Constitutional Remedies, Directive Principles of State Policy,
Fundamental Duties, Amendment of the constitutional powers and procedures.
MODULE-III UNION GOVERNMENT
Union Government: Union Government, Union Legislature (Parliament), Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha (with
powers and functions), president of India (with powers and functions), Prime minister of India (With powers and
functions), Union judiciary (Supreme court), Jurisdiction of the supreme court.
MODULE-IV STATE GOVERNMENT
State Government: State Government, State legislature (Legislative Assembly/ Vidhan Sabha, Legislative council/
Vidhan parishad), powers and functions of the state legislature, State executive, Governor of the state (with powers
and functions), The chief Minister of the state (with powers and functions), State Judiciary (High courts)
MODULE-V ELECTION COMMISSION
Election Commission: Election Commission: Role and Functioning, Chief Election Commissioner and Election
Commissioners, State Election Commission: Role and Functioning, Institute and Bodies for the welfare of
SC/ST/OBC and women.
