THE DEER AND SEA SNAIL
A long time ago in a jungle in Aru Islands, lived a group of deer. They were very proud of their
ability in running very fast. They always stayed in different places. They challenged other
animals in a running match. If the deer won the match, they took over the place and stayed
there.
Not far from the jungle, there was a beautiful beach. A group of sea snail lived there. The deer
heard about the beautiful beach and planned to live there. They had a plan to challenge snails in
a running match. They were very sure to win the match. Sea snails were slow in walking. “
What’s the rule?” asked the leader of the sea snails after he heard about the challenge.
“Do you see all the capes there? There are twelve capes, from here until there,” the deer leader
pointed the capes.
The distance between one cape to another was very far.
“We run from the first cape until the twelfth cape. If my runner arrives first at the twelfth cape,
we’re the winner. And we stay here!”
The sea snails then had a meeting. They set a strategy to win the match.
“My plan is to put the twelve of us in every cape. If their runner arrives in every cape, you
shout. So, the deer will never rest and gets very tired,” said the leader.
And the day of the match finally arrived. All animals watched this unique match, the deer
versus the sea snail. The runners were standing side by side.
Then, the deer ran very fast. In just a second, he already left the sea snail. After a few hours of
running, he arrived at the first cape.
He shouted, “Hey? Where are you?”
“I’m here,” said the sea snail.
He was another sea snail that was hiding in the first cape. The deer was surprised. He cancelled
his plan to get some rest.
He continued running. In every cape, there was always a sea snail. And the deer always
cancelled his plan to get some rest.
Finally, the deer almost reached the twelfth cape but he was exhausted. He was really tired. And
he gave up. He did not have any more strength to run. He fell down on the ground.
“Hooray!” said all the sea snails.
The deer were so embarrassed. They were just tricked by the clever sea snails. So the deer came
back to the jungle and never returned to the beach
PUTRI BUNGA AND THE PRINCE OF FISH
PUTRI Bunga was a kind girl. She lived with her uncle and aunt. Her parents died when she was a
baby. She was an orphan.
"Aunty, I have done the chores, sweeping and mopping. Now I want to go to the river to clean the
dirty plates, spoons, forks, and the cooking pot," said Putri Bunga to her aunt.
"Yes, Dear. But please be careful. And don't spend too much time there. After you have finished, go
home immediately," said the aunt.
"I will, Aunty," said Putri Bunga.
Putri Bunga then rushed to the river. Her aunt watched her go.
On the way to the river, Putri Bunga sang a song. She was a truly polite girl. She greeted people she
met nicely. In return, people greeted her back warmly. Everybody in the village knew her. Putri Bunga
was a beautiful girl.
When arrived at the riverside, she immediately cleaned all the dirty kitchen utensils. They put them on
the riverside. One by one she cleaned the plates, spoons, forks, and the last one was the cooking
pot.
When she was cleaning the forks, a golden fish was rushed by the water and went into the cooking
pot. Putri Bunga did not see the fish; she was too busy cleaning the forks.
Suddenly, she heard someone called her name and asked for help.
"Putri Bunga, please help me!"
Putri Bunga looked around. She did not see anyone in the riverside. She then continued cleaning the
forks.
"Putri Bunga, please help me. I'm inside the cooking pot."
Putri Bunga did not believe what she heard. But she was so curious. She then looked inside the
cooking pot.
"A golden fish? Why is it inside the cooking pot?" She then took the fish up. S
he wanted to throw the fish back to the river.
Before she did that, the fish turned into a handsome man.
"Don't be afraid, Putri Bunga. I'm the golden fish you helped. I'm the prince of fish. I was rushed by
the water and accidentally went inside your cooking pot."
The man then continued, "Putri Bunga, I have known you for a long time. Every time you go to the
riverside, I always watch you. Putri Bunga, you are very beautiful. I'm in love with you. Will you marry
me?"
Putri Bunga was surprised. She never thought that a prince of fish would propose her. She then said,
"I will marry you. But you have to live with me and my uncle and aunt on the land. You also have to
make us happy," said Putri Bunga.
The prince of fish agreed. Then they got married and lived happily ever after.
The Monkey and The Crocodile
Once upon a time, a clever monkey lived in a tree that bore juicy, red rose apples. He was very happy. One fine
day, a crocodile swam up to that tree and told the monkey that he had traveled a long distance and was in search
of food as he was very hungry. The kind monkey offered him a few rose apples. The crocodile enjoyed them
very much and asked the monkey whether he could come again for some more fruit. The generous monkey
happily agreed.
The crocodile returned the next day. And the next. And the next one after that. Soon the two became very good
friends. They discussed their lives, their friends and family, like all friends do. The crocodile told the monkey
that he had a wife and that they lived on the other side of the river. So the kind monkey offered him some extra
rose apples to take home to his wife. The crocodile’s wife loved the rose apples and made her husband promise
to get her some every day.
Meanwhile, the friendship between the monkey and the crocodile deepened as they spent more and more time
together. The crocodile’s wife started getting jealous. She wanted to put an end to this friendship. So she
pretended that she could not believe that her husband could be friends with a monkey. Her husband tried to
convince her that he and the monkey shared a true friendship. The crocodile’s wife thought to herself that if the
monkey lived on a diet of rose monkeys, his flesh would be very sweet. So she asked the crocodile to invite the
monkey to their house.
The crocodile was not happy about this. He tried to make the excuse that it would be difficult to get the monkey
across the river. But his wife was determined to eat the monkey’s flesh. So she thought of a plan. One day, she
pretended to be very ill and told the crocodile that the doctor said that she would only recover if she ate a
monkey’s heart. If her husband wanted to save her life, he must bring her his friend’s heart.
The crocodile was aghast. He was in a dilemma. On the one hand, he loved his friend. On the other, he could
not possibly let his wife die. The crocodile’s wife threatened him saying that if he did not get her the monkey’s
heart, she would surely die.
So the crocodile went to the rose apple tree and invited the monkey to come home to meet his wife. He told the
monkey that he could ride across the river on the crocodile’s back. The monkey happily agreed. As they reached
the middle of the river, the crocodile began to sink. The frightened monkey asked him why he was doing that.
The crocodile explained that he would have to kill the monkey to save his wife’s life. The clever monkey told
him that he would gladly give up his heart to save the life of the crocodile’s wife, but he had left his heart
behind in the rose apple tree. He asked the crocodile to make haste and turn back so that the monkey could go
get his heart from the apple tree.
The silly crocodile quickly swam back to the rose apple tree. The monkey scampered up the tree to safety. He
told the crocodile to tell his wicked wife that she had married the biggest fool in the world.

mercy.

The hunter then brought the parakeet king to his home. The parakeet king chirped
melodiously everyday to please the hunter.

king intended to buy the parakeet.
“Oh my Majesty, I do not intend to go up against your wish to have this bird, but it is hard
for me to hand over him to you,” said the hunter.
“I would like to buy him with high price,” replied the king.
At the palace, the parakeet king was put in a golden cage ang got delicious foods, but he still
felt imprisoned. His sorrow made him sick. He stopped singing at all.
The parakeet king came up with an idea.
