CHAPTER 6: SITE ANALYSIS AND SYNTHESIS

This chapter focuses on urban characteristic of Chow Kit district and the current location of KL Krash Pad and the area surrounding it. Brief introduction of Kuala Lumpur city centre is discussed in the beginning, and how the urban development shaped Chow Kit district into what it is at present. The chapter also discusses the conditions and factors analysed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the specific site.

The analysis is divided into 3 major areas as explained below: i. Urban Analysis

Urban analyses were done in the Chow Kit district to identify the urban features as well as transportation and pedestrian linkages that need to be considered prior to the design process. SWOT (Strenght, Weakness, Opportunity and Threat) Analysis is carried out to support the date for impending design brief and architectural studies. ii. Site inventory:

This part of the analysis the location, history, legal description, site- socioeconomics, issues, problems, potentials, planning guidelines, development requirements and the future development of the site and the surrounding context. iii. Site analysis and synthesis:

This section discusses natural, physical, aesthetic and contextual factors relating to the study of the site. The synthesis of collected data will sum up and provide hypothetical architectural solutions or conclusions to the issues derived from the analysis.

6.1

KUALA LUMPUR CITY CENTRE

Kuala Lumpur is the capital and the largest city of Malaysia in terms of population. The city proper, making up an area of 243 km2 (94 sq mi), has a population of 1.4 million as of 2010 (Jabatan Perangkaan Malaysia, 2011). Figure 6.1 shows the location of Kuala Lumpur in relation to Malaysia. Figure 6.2 shows Kuala Lumpur and its conurbation.

Kuala Lumpur has been divided into six strategic zones whose boundaries align with major roads, rail and river corridors. In order to develop the spatial strategies into further detail as well as to provide greater focus, the six zones are identified below as shown in Figure 6.3: i. ii. iii. iv. v. vi. The City Centre (previously the CPA) Wangsa Maju - Maluri Sentul - Menjalara Damansara - Penchala Bukit Jalil - Seputeh Bandar Tun Razak - Sungai Besi

6.1.1 The City Centre and Chow Kit District Chow Kit is located in the strategic zone of the City Centre at the heart of Kuala Lumpur. According to KLSP2020, forward-looking strategies are essential to bring people back to the City Centre and create a quality working and living environment that will capitalise upon the recent investment in modern infrastructure for the City. In order to achieve this goal, KLSP2020 has outlined several strategies for the development area. Figure 6.4 illustrates the development strategy for City Centre.
