E: Did you see Star Trek on TV last night, Max? It was so
good. M: No, I can't stand it. I'm not really into sci-fi or
action programs. E: But it was really dramatic and the
special effects are so cool.
M: Oh, yes, I know. My brother was watching it. I saw the spaceship destroy the
city... yes, that was good. But then
I carried on watching The
Simpsons. E: Ugh, I hate
cartoons.
M: I know you do, but I love them. And ... although it's a comedy, there's a mixture of
funny and sad scenes. Last
night, for example, Bart Simpson failed an exam ... by one point! ... He was really
sad... I nearly cried.
E: Oh, perhaps I should watch that episode. It sounds good.
Part 2: Audio script
Host: Today our guests are Mai and Nam. Can you tell us about where you are from?
Mai: Sure, I’m from Hà Nội.

2
Host: Could you please explain a bit for us what you like and dislike about Hà Nội?
Mai: I like the faster pace of life. It's exciting, and there is always something to do.
However, as the second largest with an estimated population of nearly 8 million, Hà
Nội is the second largest
1

city in Vietnam. So, you know, traffic congestion is a problem in our city. That's
what I dislike most about it.
Host: I see. What about you, Nam? Where are you from?
Nam: I live in Thái Bình province. With a population of about 268,000 people, Thái
Bình is the 23rd largest city in Viêt Nam. I like it because it's certainly quieter and
more relaxed than the bigger cities. It has a lower cost of living than some other
parts of Việt Nam. It is in the top 20% of the least expensive cities in the world. A
family of four can live comfortably with roughly 15 million VND in the city.
Host: Do you mean it's cheaper to live there than in Hà Nội?
Nam: That's right. I also like it because we have a strong sense of community.
Everyone is friendly towards each other and helps each other out in times of need.
Host: That does sound nice.
