Endocrine System Worksheet
Time Estimate: 35 minutes

Part 1:
Follow these steps to complete your research.
1. Research a disorder that involves one or more glands in the endocrine system. You
do not have to choose one that was introduced in the lesson. Feel free to explore.
Diabetes
2. Identify symptoms of the disorder.
Symptoms can include excessive thirst, weight loss, blurred vision, fatigue, numbing
or tingling, polyphagia.
3. Identify the gland or glands involved in the disorder.
Affects the pancreas
4. Identify the impacts of this disorder on the body and why these happen.
The main impacts to the body are damaging blood vessels throughout the body due
to persistently high blood sugar, which leads to complications in organs like the
eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart, and feet. Which can lead to vision loss, kidney disease,
nerve damage, heart attacks, and foot ulcers.
5. Identify treatments or prevention methods for this disorder.
Lifestyle changes include eating a healthier diet, exercising regularly and losing
weight. Medication wise there are oral medications (pills), insulin injections, and
dipeptidyl peptidase inhibitors.
Part 2:

Lesson Connections
Use what you learned from the lesson to answer the questions below. The answers to
these questions should be added at the end of your presentation or submitted in the
comment box.
1. Endocrine disorders are often difficult to diagnose. Use what you have learned from
the lesson to explain why.
Symptoms often overlap with other conditions, which they can manifest with other
nonspecific signs like fatigue, weight changes, and mood swings. This makes it
challenging to loke for the underlying hormonal imbalance.
2. What is one reason endocrine disorders are important to understand?
They are important to understand because the endocrine system regulates how
much of each hormone is released. It also helps control mood, growth and
development.
3. How do you think endocrine disorders presenting at different ages would affect a
person differently? Give one example.

For example, if you have a hormone imbalance as a child it will severely have an
affect on your development as an adult.
4. Out of all the glands you have learned about, which do you find the most influential
in the homeostasis of the human body? Why?
The most important gland is the hypothalamus because it acts as the bodys controls
center, monitoring internal condition and sending signals to other glands.
