Sandy Schmidt
From victim to survivor to volunteer, Sandy Schmidt has given over 30,000 hours to
save lives. She believes that every person deserves to live, and to live free from fear. That
belief has driven Sandy, a former victim of domestic violence, to start Women of Worth. Its
a little-known secret that Sandy has volunteered completely, giving more than 3,000 hours
per year for the past 10 years to ensure that women and children have a place to go.
Women of Worth was birthed from Sandys own personal experiences with abuse and
the obstacles she faced when trying to start a new life as a single mother with three young
children. She founded Women of Worth over 10 years ago, operating without government
funding and without receiving a single dime in charity. In 2010, Sandy opened a home for
women and children feeing in fear; a place where they can go to be safe. Sandy knows
personally that when women leave a violent relationship, the risk of fatal injury increases.
She was compelled to open Hettys Haven, a supportive safe-haven home where 12 to 15
women and children can live. Hettys Haven honors Hetty Williams who was shot to death
with a high-powered nail gun by her husband of more than 20 years in Sandys community.
Hettys Haven enables women to build strength, confdence and trust along their journey to
a safe new life.
Sandys passion is to provide a safe way out for victims of domestic violence, sexual
assault and human traffcking. Beyond shelter, Women of Worth offers practical assistance
and support services, including counseling, advocacy, support groups, life skills and
mentoring, assistance with re-entry into the workforce and/or schooling, transitional
housing, and furniture and personal items.
Sandy has rallied the incredible support of her community. The result is that families can
live in safety, renewed hopefulness, and growing productivity free from fear, the threat of
violence and abuse, which creates a healthier community for all.

Toni Thompson of the Nevada County Food Bank should be citizen of the decade. Toni
puts in so much personal time and care to the Food Bank its almost immeasurable. This
past year they fed more people than ever with fewer funds. Its Tonis forward-thinking that
enables this to work. This past year, the Food Bank acquired a new building that cut down
overhead by a third in these diffcult times. That is huge! She also started a garden to supply
fresh vegetables to the needy. Of course there are a lot of local people who helped Toni get
these things done, but she was the spearhead of it all. Im not the best writer, but I felt you
should know that 200 words is not enough to describe all she does for our community and
her motto is, no one shall go hungry as long as Im here.

excited to present this annual honor to businesses, people and
places within Nevada County. The hard work of these individu-
als and organizations help create a great place to live, work and
play.
During the month of January, we asked you our loyal readers
to tell us who your favorites are in the community. To ensure
the integrity of the voting process, ballots were sealed and
mailed to a contracted company Marketing Solutions Group.
MSG is located in Edmond, Okla. and specializes in third-party
database tabulation. Each ballot was entered by MSG and they
then sent us the results.
This year, we had more votes than ever! Over 1,100 ballots
were submitted and ballots not meeting the published criteria
were excluded from consideration. With this large number of
votes, it is truly an honor to be titled the Best of Nevada County.

Our frst Hospice of the Foothills Gift and Thrift store opened
20 years ago, made possible then and now by our loyal custom-
ers, valuable employees and volunteers. Our dedicated team
of employees and volunteers, many of which are longtime local
residents, put forth a great deal of effort to help you fnd what
you need at bargain basement prices. Last year, 169 volunteers
donated a total of 20,557 hours and this is what makes our fun
shopping experience possible.
recently, Gift and Thrift employees Shelly and Chrissy, work-
ing in the Nevada City store receiving area, found and turned
in an old envelope from 1994 containing $900 in one hundred
dollar bills and unsigned travelers checks! Using real Sherlock
Holmes-style sleuthing, Customer Service Specialist Terry, found
the donor using the copy of the 18-year-old passport also in
the envelope. When the donor picked up their valuables they
requested $200 be donated to Friends of Hospice to beneft the
programs of Hospice of the Foothills. Kudos to all and thank you
for the great way you represent Hospice of the Foothills in our
community.
