Honors Algebra 2: Summer Practice
Welcome! Thank you for enrolling into Honors Algebra 2. I am looking forward to working
with you next school year.
Attached you will find a packet of practice problems over material which should be familiar
to you. Please do a variety of problems without the use of a calculator to ensure
complete understanding of the topic. Problems at the end of each grouping tend to be
more challenging. You do not have to do all of them, but instead enough to prove to
yourself you know the concept. Please note, radicals (square roots) should be simplified
and not written as a decimal.
As you do these problems, focus on your learning. Although the correct answer is
desired, the process is just as important. Throughout this class, you will be expected
to justify work. While doing this summer packet, check your answers against the answer
key provided. If you are not getting problems correct, please find your errors. If you
cannot figure out where you are going wrong, seek help from friends, parents or the
internet. There are many math help websites that offer tutorials. A good place to start
may be www.khanacademy.org - just type the topic in the search box.
Please note:
On the first full day of class, you will have an opportunity to ask specific questions
in class.
On the second full day of class, there will be a limited opportunity to ask specific
questions in class not answered on the first day AND you will learn a new lesson.
On the 3rd full day of class, you will have a 40 question multiple choice assessment
covering this material that will count as a 20 point quiz. No calculators will be
allowed on this assessment. This is your first grade for this course, so please
prepare properly. This assessment will also be used to ensure appropriate
placement into this class and verify understanding. Further work or a different
placement may be assigned based on your results. You will want to prepare well as
this will be your first grade of the semester.
To that end, it is important you do the majority of the reviewing/refreshing of these topics
over time in order to prepare to do your best. Do NOT wait until the weekend before
school begins in the fall. Since I may wish to look over your summer work to examine
your processes and provide feedback, please make sure work is neat, organized and
easy to follow. If you would like an extra copy of this packet feel free to print as many as
is helpful from my website mathwithmrsstrattton.weebly.com [click on the Summer Packet
Hon Alg 2].
See you in September.
Warmly,
Mrs. Stratton
