Respected Members of the Selection Committee,
I am writing to express my keen interest in the PhD position in Machine Learning for Satellite
Gravimetry at the Chair of Space Geodesy, ETH Zurich, as advertised under the HiGrav project.
The opportunity to contribute to pioneering research that combines advanced AI techniques with
satellite gravimetry to improve flood forecasting aligns closely with my academic background
and research aspirations.
Having completed my Master's degree in Computer Science, I have developed a strong
foundation in mathematics, physics, and programming, and cultivated a particular interest in
geospatial data analysis and machine learning. My academic journey has been marked by
consistent excellence, demonstrated through a strong academic record and a series of
research-oriented projects. My MSc thesis is based on the topic “Bengali Handwritten
Character Recognition using hybrid Convolutional Neural Network combining the
Inception and Resnet-50 properties”.
In addition to my formal education, I have earned certifications from the Indian Space
Research Organisation (ISRO) in satellite remote sensing and GIS, which significantly
enhanced my understanding of Earth observation technologies and their real-world applications
in hydrology and disaster management. Furthermore, my recent certification from IIT
Kharagpur’s AI4ICPS Program in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning has
deepened my expertise in advanced ML models, probabilistic learning, and data-driven
forecasting, all of which are directly relevant to the objectives of the HiGrav project.
I am particularly drawn to HiGrav's goal of leveraging GRACE data and AI for flood prediction,
as it represents a vital intersection between cutting-edge technology and societal impact. The
prospect of improving the spatial and temporal resolution of GRACE gravity fields using AI, and
integrating these insights into early warning systems, resonates deeply with my own vision of
applying science for public good.
I am highly motivated to work in a multidisciplinary and collaborative research environment like
ETH Zurich, where innovation thrives. I am confident that my skills in machine learning, data
analysis, and geospatial modeling, and my enthusiasm for impactful research make me a strong
candidate for this PhD position. I am also eager to engage in teaching and mentoring roles and
to contribute positively to the academic community.
Thank you for considering my application. I would be honored to be part of this important
research initiative and contribute to its success. I look forward to the opportunity to further
discuss my application in an interview.
Yours Sincerely,
Sumit Saha
