Lab 3 Respiration

The document outlines a lab exercise aimed at investigating the effects of exercise on pulse and breathing rates in individuals with varying fitness levels. It details the procedure for conducting the experiment, including materials needed and how to record results. Additionally, it includes assessment criteria for reporting and manipulation skills related to the experiment.

Date:

Topic: Respiration

Title: Effects of Exercise on the body

Aim: To investigate the immediate effects of exercise on the pulse rate and breathing rate of an
individual.

Materials: stop watch, notepad, pen

Procedure:

1. Select three (3) individuals as test subjects. These should include an athletic individual who train
vigorously daily, an individual who engages in moderate levels of exercise weekly and a non-
athletic individual.
2. Allow everyone to sit quietly for two (2) minutes.
3. At the third minute, ask each individual to count their number of breaths while checking their
pulse rate on the hand.
4. At the fourth minute, leave the test subject to rest and in the fifth minute count the breaths
taken and check the pulse rate.
5. Allow the test subjects to perform three (3) minutes of vigorous exercise, which includes
running, jumping and pushups.
6. Immediately following the exercise allow each test subject to sit down and count their breaths
while checking their pulse.
7. Check the pulse rate and the number of breaths every other minute until the test subjects
return to quite breathing.
8. Record results in a table (as shown below) and plot 3 graphs of pulse and breaths vs time in
mins.

Results Table:

Time (mins) Athletic Individual Individual with Non-athletic Individual

moderate exercise
level
Number Pulse Number Pulse Number Pulse rate/
of rate/beats of rate/beats of beats per
breaths per min breaths per min breaths min
per min per min per min
Discussion: Describe how respiration affects the body. Discuss the importance of breathing in aiding
the respiratory process. Infer from the table and graph the immediate effects of exercise on the
pulse rate and breathing rate of each test subject.
