Malta!

Malta once passed through the Roman and Byzantine Empire, was
conquered by Muslim Arabs, was part of the Kingdom of Sicily, went
through a period of Spanish and Turkish colonization. Napoleon
Bonaparte conquered the island, and when he surrendered, Great
Britain settled there. Consequently, it became part of the British
Empire.
Only in 1947 Malta began to be governed autonomously.
All this history greatly influenced the culture of the island, and
especially the language.
The island country is located in the central Mediterranean Sea. A
small but strategically important group of islands, the archipelago
has through its long and turbulent history played a vital role in the
struggles of a succession of powers for domination of the
Mediterranean and in the interplay between emerging Europe and
the older cultures of Africa and the Middle East. As a result,
Maltese society has been molded by centuries of foreign rule by
various powers, including the Phoenicians, Romans, Greeks, Arabs,
Normans, Sicilians, Swabians, Aragonese, Hospitallers, French, and
British.
The Maltese language is a mixture of Arabic, Sicilian dialects, with
influences from Italian and English. It is a unique language and
spoken only in the country! It is the language that represents all the
history behind the island, and the history of our world.
Having been a British colony for a long time, English is also widely
spoken on the island. Currently, about 88% of the Maltese population
speaks English. But make no mistake! It is not the American English
we are used to, the Maltese English accent is pulled into Arabic and
British English.
