Duncan & Kopperud (2008) discuss many ideas related to what it means to be an active and
thoughtful citizen in a democratic society.
1. Which level of citizenship (personally responsible, participating, transforming) best
describes you? Include what effect family and/or service has had on your citizenship
development. Provide examples from the reading and your experience to illustrate your
position.
2. Reflecting on the reading and your personal citizenship assessment, what is one area you
identified that you would like to grow and develop (i.e. increase knowledge of an issue,
leadership skills (p. 40), words manifest (p. 52), increase awareness of influence of privilege,
white privilege (p. 64), etc.). Explain why you chose this area and how improving your skills
or understanding would enhance your citizenship development.
3. What steps are you willing to take to support your growth in this area and how do you
plan to hold yourself accountable?
Be sure to remember to respond to the post of a peer for your final 2 points.
I believe that the level of citizenship that I have is that I am personally responsible. The
Multicultural Resource Center has molded me to be a responsible individual that usually tends
to hold many of the tasks and jobs done in the center on my own back.
I identified that my professional development along with my leadership skills need to
develop and grow more. I chose this area because in the long run it will help me in other
job/career settings where I can use this as a tool to my benefit. I feel as though it would make
sense to strengthen these skills as well because it doesn’t matter where you go, but being able
to have that tool around your belt will have a better outcome in regards to results in the work
place.
A few steps I am willing to take is going to workshops that teach you how to be a leader.
Also, by shadowing and learning from others through programs and clubs about how to be an
efficient and safe leader.
We recognize and remember the events at Selma as a powerful and important example of social change.
President Obama states that there have been many additional social change efforts over the last 50
years and then goes on to describe a number of current social justice issues that require our attention and
effort.
Please choose one of the social justice issues he mentions.
Give an example of an intervention, campaign or program you believe could address the issue in a
meaningful way. This can be an existing one or it can be an idea you have.
Describe how it might address the issue you have chosen.
Based on the knowledge you've acquired through reading the Morton article, state the paradigm in which
your idea falls.
Support your choice with evidence from the article.
Finally, respond to the post of a peer in a meaningful way.
A social justice issue that I feel should be addressed in the video that Obama talks about
is the death of the four younger girls in Birmingham. Another issue that should be addressed is
the event of “Bloody Sunday.” I personally felt a though that the whole act of a nonviolent
protestors and finding peace and conflict resolution strategy’s is something that should work for
overcoming obstacles to get a point across. Understanding the act of conflict resolution is
addressing the issue and finding out what is needed and wanted and not confusing or relating the
two things. The acting of retaliation by firing arm and attacking those who are peaceful is
unacceptable and defeats the purpose. Or the act of collaborating and coming together as the
people. “The word ‘we’ is the most powerful word.” I feel as though my idea of nonviolent
protesting and peace and conflict revolutionary approaches cover all three paradigms of service. I
say social change because in peace and conflict resolution studies is a person who can be
described as one who leads or guides those who are less knowledgeable. I say a project because
the purpose of it definitely relates hand and hand to conflict resolution because peace studies
focus on finding solutions and achieving them for themselves and others. I say charity because
having a peace and conflicting revolutionary stance allows you to give back, which is the true
purpose of even being impactful on different communities.
