Black Tuesday and the Wall Street Crash

A. Great Depression

a. The Great Depression lasted approximately 10 years

b. The United States was doing well for a short period under President Herbert

Hoover’s (the do-nothing president) leadership

c. Six months following Herbert Hoovers inauguration happened January 1929

d. share prices on the New York Stock Exchange were under a “bull market” and

peaked in August 1929.

B. Wall Street Crash

a. On October 24, 1929, stock prices fell rapidly which is called the Wall Street

Crash

b. thousands of people were financially ruined

c. Wall Street was given billions of dollars that were drawn from the banks

d. This was caused by people wanting to invest in the stock market to make money

faster

e. All this mony was used for loans to carry margin accounts

f. Everyone started to panic when stock market prices dropped


g. When people started to sell their shares of stock prices dropped even lower

basically making them worthless

h. After the wall street crash, banks and businesses failed and most of the people lost

their jobs and homes

C. Dust Bowl

a. farmers all over the United States were affected by the Dust Bowl

b. Weather made the situation worse because some areas experienced winds that

blew away dusty soil making it impossible to grow crops

c. many farmers left their farms to look for work in California and the west coast of

the country

D. Herbert Hoover

a. Hobert Hover was born August 10, 1874, West Branch, Iowa

b. He was educated at Stanford University and Graduated 1895

c. Before he was president, he was an engineer

d. He was a Quaker and part of the Society of Friends and Republican

e. He married Lou Henry February 10, 1899

f. His son was Alan Henry Hoover, was born 1907

g. his Vice President was Charles Curtis

h. Died October 20, 1964, in New York City

i. Buried West Branch Iowa

E. Franklin Delano Roosevelt

a. also known as FDR

b. Born January 30, 1882, at Hyde Park New York


c. He went to Havard College he graduated 1903, also went to Columbia Law

School

d. He was a public official, and lawyer

e. He was an Episcopalian

f. Married Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, on March 17, 1905

g. He had 4 kids James Roosevelt, Elliott Roosevelt, Franklin Delano Roosevelt,

John Aspinwall Roosevelt.
