Bali Dana

The document discusses the importance of balidAna or animal sacrifice in navAvaraNa pUjA or ninefold worship ritual. It states that while many currently only offer sarvabhUta-bali at the end, properly performing balidAna for each of the nine AvaraNas and additional deities is important to gain the grace of the deity and attain siddhi or spiritual accomplishment. It provides a list of 20 specific bali offerings for each AvaraNa and additional deities that should be made regularly to gain kShiprasiddhi or quick success, and can then progress to more advanced 36 or 64 types of balidAna.

By Sri Kamakoti Mandali on Feb 6, 2012 | In Srividya namaH paradevatAyai Today, most perform navAvaraNa pUjA using khaDgamAlA. Even when one performs the actual pUjA along with pAtrAsAdana prayoga, balidAna is not given prominence. The pUjA is concluded by offering only sarvabhUta-bali. If a sAdhaka wants to attain siddhi of the navAvaraNa pUjA-prayoga and attain the grace of iShTa-devatA, balidAna has to be performed with great attention. The sahasranAma of rAjarAjeshvarI asserts that parAmbA is pleased by bali, homa, tarpaNa and nAmapArAyaNa. Bali is offered not only in the samaShTi, but also for each of the nine AvaraNas of shrIchakrarAja. 1. vakratuNDa bali 2. dattAtreya bali 3. laghushyAmalA + uCchiShTa mahAgaNapati (prathamAvaraNa bali) 4. dakShiNA kAlikA + mahAkAla bhairava (dvitIyAvaraNa bali) 5. bagalAmukhI + mahAgaNapati (tritIyAvaraNa bali) 6. kAmeshvarI + rAjagopAla (chaturthAvaraNa bali) 7. tripurabhairavI + vaTukanAtha (panchamAvaraNa bali) 8. AsurI durgA + aghora (ShaShThAvaraNa bali) 9. kAlarAtriH + kArtavIryArjuna (saptamAvaraNa bali) 10. annapUrNA + panchavaktra sadAshiva (aShTamAvaraNa) 11. kamalAtmikA + mantrarAja nR^isimha (navamAvaraNa) 12. gaNapati bali 13. vaTuka bali 14. kShetrapAla bali 15. yoginI bali 16. sarvabhUta bali 17. vArtALI bali 18. kurukullA bali 19. sumukhI bali and 20. rAjarAjeshvara bali

Additionally, sampradAya-bali is also offered. Our lineage offers a bali to vanadurgA. Many following keralAchAra offer bali to shUlinI durgA as their tutelary deity. Some others offer bali to local deities such as hiraNyakeshI, banashankarI etc. One who regularly performs vimshati-bali during navAvaraNa pUjA prayoga attains kShiprasiddhi. One then graduates further to undertake thirty-six and sixty-four kinds of balidAna.
