Chapter One: American Psycho

American Psycho, a novel by Bret Easton Ellis, explores the life of Patrick Bateman, a Wall Street psychopath who embodies the intertwining of capitalism and depravity through graphic violence and consumer culture. The concept of a sigma male is introduced as a man who exists outside traditional social hierarchies, characterized by independence and self-validation. The document connects Bateman's behavior to the sigma male archetype, suggesting that his actions reflect a complex understanding of societal norms and individualism.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

AMERICAN PSYCHO
American Psycho, novel by Bret Easton Ellis, published in 1991.
American Psycho is, above all, an ugly book. It is an extraordinarily
graphic description of obscene violence, which is spliced with
reviews of music by Phil Collins and Whitney Houston, and with
endless, repetitive descriptions of 1980s main street fashion. The
novel’s protagonist, Patrick Bateman, is a psychopath who also
works on Wall Street. He conducts business meetings, goes to
upmarket restaurants, and commits rape and murder. The novel
registers no difference between these activities. Depravity, it
suggests, is so finely woven into the fabric of contemporary life that
it is no longer possible to see it or depict it, to know when
capitalism stops and brutalization begins.
There is no attempt to take a moral stance on Bateman, or
the culture to which he belongs. But the extremity of the violence,
coupled with the uninflected way in which it is described, produces
a strange, ethereal dimension to the writing, which is as close as
the novel can come to an ethics, or to an aesthetic. As Bateman
struggles to understand why he has been summoned to this
particular damnation, he is unable to formulate to himself his own
misery, or his own confusion. As a result, the novel produces a
longing for ethical certainty, for some kind of clear perspective on a
culture that has become unreadable, and unthinkable. This is a
longing that speaks of a kind of innocence, even in the midst of
depravity, and for this reason alone, American Psycho must
continue to be read.

BRET EASTON ELLIS

Bret Easton Ellis (born March 7, 1964) is an American author, screenwriter, short-
story writer, and director. Ellis was first regarded as one of the so-called
literary Brat Pack[1] and is a self-proclaimed satirist whose trademark technique, as
a writer, is the expression of extreme acts and opinions in an affectless style. [2]
[3] His novels commonly share recurring characters
SIGMA MALE

What is a sigma male? (Sigma male definition)

A sigma male is a man within the socio sexual hierarchy who chooses to live
his life outside of the normal social dominance hierarchy structures of
society. Sigma males share many traits in common with the alpha archetype,
though their tendency to walk outside of the lines of traditional social
dominance hierarchies sets them apart and makes them different
The archetypal sigma male is defined above all else by his tendency to
forsake the traditional social dominance hierarchies of modern society.

These men walk a more solitary path. They’re sometimes called ‘lone
wolves’ or ‘wanderers.’

The socio-sexual hierarchy, originally attributed to Vox Day, is a system

for describing how men and boys relate to one another and organize
themselves into different archetypes.

These archetypes categorize men based on who they are, how they behave,
what their inclinations are likely to be, and how they’re perceived by women
in the sexual marketplace.

By the end of 2020 sigma male personality became

famous through several memes uploaded on YouTube,
Reddit, several blogs, Instagram, and other social media
Why do men like sigma male?
The answer to the question is quite simple
A sigma male is a man who lives life based on his
own rules, thriving for his passion, not distracted
by societal norms or standards. He is his boss, he
doesn't need validation from anyone. By anyone, it
means anyone literally, their ability to walk off
from predefined and traditional norms.
Now here, you can see the men can do whatever they
want by their own rules, He doesn't want to depend on
others. He doesn't need any kind of validation from
others. So this is the trait that attracts men to be a sigma
male. ( advantages and disadvantages will be explained
in chapter 2 )

AMERICAN PSYCHO AND SIGMA MALE

A Sigma is a term applied to one who

inadvertently goes against societal
norms without even flinching, rising
above every conflict faced. However,
as humans are much more
complicated to be grouped into a
single terminology, the term was met
with little fanfare. Users on the
internet started to describe obscene
acts as Sigma behaviors, such as
asking for a kid's meal as an adult.
Comedically, given the definition, this
is Sigma behavior as the individual
does not flinch, something Bateman is
perfect at. Taking these acts and
pairing them with a successful
business person who never bats an
eye like Bateman became a perfect
combination for the internet. Bateman
role is now synonymous with internet
comedians as Sigma behavior.
But is Bateman truly a Sigma, as the
memes boast? While he never
purposefully sits alone at lunch to
make himself seem like a Sigma,
other instances in the film can help
determine where he sits on the Sigma
hierarchy. As many behaviors can
define a Sigma, a table will be
established to help understand where
Bateman stands. He will receive 40
percent in the most aligned column
for each row. And when added, a full
makeup of Patrick Bateman can be
compiled. (Briefly explained in
chapters 3 & 4)
