ABSTRACT

Utilization of Artificial Intelligence Tools and its relationship to Students

Academic Performance

Randolf et, al.

This study investigated the relationship between the utilization of artificial intelligence

(AI) tools and the academic performance of college students at Assumption College of

Nabunturan, Davao de Oro. Employing a descriptive research design, 218 participants

across all college departments were selected through stratified random sampling. Data

were collected via structured questionnaires to assess students’ AI tool usage patterns

(e.g., ChatGPT, Grammarly) and academic performance metrics such as study habits,

time management, and grades. Statistical analysis using Pearson’s correlation revealed

a low, non-significant correlation (r = 0.044, p = 0.522) between AI tool utilization and

academic achievement. While students acknowledged AI’s benefits in personalizing

learning experiences, improving task efficiency, and clarifying complex topics, its direct

impact on measurable outcomes like test scores or GPA was minimal. Instead,

traditional academic behaviors such as goal setting, proactive resource utilization, and

effective time management emerged as stronger predictors of academic success. The

findings suggest that AI tools, though valuable as supplementary aids, do not replace

the foundational role of student-driven strategies in achieving academic excellence. The

study recommends integrating AI responsibly into curricula while prioritizing skill

development in critical thinking, self-regulation, and ethical technology use. Future

research should explore discipline-specific AI applications and longitudinal impacts to

optimize AI’s role in education.
