Introduction
An ergonomics workstation is a workspace designed to fit the user’s physical needs,
aiming to reduce strain, prevent injuries, and improve comfort. It includes properly
arranged furniture and tools—such as chairs, desks, monitors, and keyboards—so that
tasks can be performed with minimal physical stress.
The main goal is to prevent musculoskeletal disorders like back pain, neck strain, and
wrist injuries, which often result from poor posture and repetitive motions. By ensuring
the body maintains a natural alignment, ergonomic setups promote better posture and
reduce fatigue during long working hours.
A well-designed ergonomic workstation also enhances productivity and focus. When a
person is physically comfortable, they can work more efficiently with fewer breaks.
Proper chair support, desk height, and screen placement can significantly improve work
quality, especially in computer-heavy or technical jobs like CAD modeling.
Beyond physical benefits, ergonomics also supports mental well-being. A comfortable
workspace reduces stress and creates a more pleasant environment, boosting morale and
concentration. In short, ergonomic workstations are essential for maintaining health,
improving performance, and creating sustainable work habits.
In terms of my workstation, it consists of a chair, table, lamp, laptop, and some books.
In this experiment, I conducted a solidworks design to modify some of the key
components.
Existing Workstation
Improved Design
Justification of modifications and changes
In the revised workstation setup, the most significant improvement was the replacement
of the short and uncomfortable chair with a fully ergonomic office chair. The previous
chair had a stiff, straight back with no cushioning or adaptability, which often led to
discomfort and lower back pain, especially during long periods of sitting. This rigid
design did not support the body’s natural curves, making it unsuitable for extended
work or study sessions. To resolve these issues and enhance overall comfort, the new
ergonomic chair was introduced as a key upgrade to the workspace.
The ergonomic chair provides a range of features designed to support proper posture
and reduce physical strain. It includes an adjustable height mechanism, which allows the
user to position the seat at an optimal level relative to the desk, promoting alignment of
the arms, shoulders, and neck. The padded backrest conforms to the natural shape of the
spine, offering support to both the upper and lower back. This helps the user to maintain
a healthy sitting posture whether leaning back or sitting upright. Additionally, the
armrests offer a place to rest the forearms, relieving tension from the shoulders and
reducing fatigue in the arms and wrists.
Further modifications to the setup included a slight rotation of the computer position to
ensure a more natural and ergonomic hand placement during typing and mouse use.
This adjustment increases the available workspace and allows for a more relaxed wrist
angle, helping to prevent repetitive strain injuries over time.
Overall, these thoughtful changes have greatly improved the usability and comfort of
the workstation. The new setup supports extended study or work sessions by
minimizing discomfort, enhancing posture, and creating a more user-friendly and
health-conscious environment.
