1. INTRODUCTION TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Sustainable development means growing and improving the way we live, work, and use resources,
without harming the Earth for future generations. It’s about meeting today’s needs without
destroying the resources and environment that future generations will need.

KEY CONCEPTS:
 • Intergenerational Equity – Fairness across generations.
 • Three Pillars – Environmental protection, Economic growth, and Social equality.

• Goal – To balance nature, economy, and society for a better future.

The term 'sustainable development' became widely known after the 1987 Brundtland Report, also
called 'Our Common Future', published by the United Nations.
2. IMPORTANCE OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Why is it Important?

 • Environmental Protection – Keeps air, water, and soil clean.

 • Economic Stability – Promotes clean jobs and technologies.
 • Social Justice – Ensures equal access to resources and opportunities.

Without sustainability, we face problems like climate change, pollution, and health issues.

Example: Cities like Delhi face water and air problems due to uncontrolled growth. Planning
sustainably can solve these issues.
3. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDGS)
The United Nations launched 17 Sustainable Development Goals in 2015. These aim to make the
world safer, healthier, and fairer by 2030.

1. 1. No Poverty
2. 2. Zero Hunger
3. 3. Good Health and Well-being
4. 4. Quality Education
5. 5. Clean Water and Sanitation
6. 6. Affordable and Clean Energy
7. 7. Climate Action

India's Efforts include Swachh Bharat, solar projects, and schemes for women and the poor.
4. PRACTICES AND SOLUTIONS FOR SUSTAINABILITY
Government Actions:

 • Make eco-friendly laws

 • Build better public transport
 • Support clean energy projects

Individual Actions:

 • Save water and electricity

 • Avoid plastic and reuse materials
 • Walk or cycle to nearby places

Innovations like solar panels, electric vehicles, organic farming, and green buildings help achieve
sustainability.
5. CONCLUSION AND FINAL THOUGHTS
Sustainable development is necessary for the future. It ensures the Earth remains safe, our economy
grows, and everyone gets equal chances.

Every small action counts – from recycling to saving water. Together, we can build a better world.

"We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children."
