Definition of Tazkiyah
Self Purification ( )تزکیہmeans cleaning and purifying entire flow of actions from things which
are unwholesome and unwelcome in eye of Allah.
In other words, Tazkiya means developing of character, thought and behavior.
Tazkiya in the Qur’an
َق ْد َأ ْف َل َح َمن َز َّكا َها
He has succeeded who purifies it.
يه ْم َ ث فِي اُأْل ِّمي
ِ ِّين َرسُواًل ِّم ْن ُه ْم َي ْتلُو َع َلي ِْه ْم آ َيا ِت ِه َوي َُز ِّك َ ه َُو الَّذِي َب َع
It is He who has sent among the unlettered a Messenger from themselves reciting to them
His verses and purifying them.
Tazkiya in Hadith
أال وهى القلب: وإذا فسدت فسد الجسد كله،أال وإن فى الجسد مضغة إذا صلحت صلح الجسد كله
Verily, there is a piece of flesh in the body, if it is healthy, the whole body is healthy, and if it
is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. Verily, it is the heart.
Methodology of Prophet ( ﷺElements of Tazkiya)
1. Fearing Allah
َ َيا َأ ُّي َها الَّذ
ِين آ َم ُنوا ا َّتقُوا هَّللا َ َح َّق ُت َقا ِت ِه
O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared.
َنحْ نُ َأ ْق َربُ ِإ َل ْي ِه مِنْ َحب ِْل ْال َو ِري ِد
We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein.
2. Fear of Hereafter
عن عائشة رضي هللا عنها
يُحْ َش ُر الناس يوم القيامة حفاة عراة ُغرْ اًل
قلت يا رسول هللا الرجال والنساء جميعا ينظر بعضهم إلى بعض؟
يا عائشة األمر أشد من أن يهمهم ذلك:قال
Ā'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported:
I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) saying:
"People will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection barefooted, naked, and uncircumcised."
I said: "O Messenger of Allah, men and women together, looking at each other?"
He replied: "O Ā'ishah, the situation will be too grave for them to be concerned with that."
3. Self-Control
ان َ ت ال َّشي
ِ ْط ِ ط َوا َ َيا َأ ُّي َها الَّذ
ُ ِين آ َم ُنوا اَل َت َّت ِبعُوا ُخ
O you who believe! Follow not the footsteps of Shaitan (Satan).
4. Worship
ون َ ت ْال ِجنَّ َواِإْل
ِ نس ِإاَّل لِ َيعْ ُب ُد ُ َو َما َخ َل ْق
And I (Allah) created not the jinns and humans except they should worship Me (Alone).
5. Repentance
َ َيا َأ ُّي َها الَّذ
ِين آ َم ُنوا ُتوبُوا ِإ َلى هَّللا ِ َت ْو َب ًة َّنصُوحً ا
O you who believe! Turn to Allah with sincere repentance!
6. Self-Accountability
وتمنى على هللا، والعاجز من أتبع نفسه هواها، وعمل لما بعد الموت،الكيس من دان نفسه
A wise man is the one who calls himself to account (and refrains from doing evil deeds) and
does noble deeds to benefit him after death;
and the foolish person is the one who subdues himself to his temptations and desires and
seeks from Allah the fulfillment of his vain desires.
7. Remembrance of Allah
ُِين آ َم ُنوا َو َت ْط َمِئنُّ قُلُو ُبهُم ِبذ ِْك ِر هَّللا ِ ۗ َأاَل ِبذ ِْك ِر هَّللا ِ َت ْط َمِئنُّ ْالقُلُوب
َ الَّذ
Those who believe in Allah and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allah,
Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.
8. Good and Virtuous Company
َ َيا َأ ُّي َها الَّذ
َ ِين آ َم ُنوا ا َّتقُوا هَّللا َ َو ُكو ُنوا َم َع الصَّا ِدق
ِين
O you who believe! Be afraid of Allah, and be with those who are true.
9. Moderation
َو َك ٰ َذل َِك َج َع ۡل ٰ َن ُكمۡ ُأم ًَّة َو َس ًطا
And in the same way we have made you a moderate community.
صلَّى هَّللا ُ َع َل ْي ِه َو َسلَّ َم َ ِ َقا َل َرسُو ُل هَّللا
َأ هَّللا
ال ِإ َلى ِ ْد َو ُم َها َوِإنْ ق َّل
َ ِ َأ َحبُّ اَأْلعْ َم
The acts most pleasing to God are those which are done most continuously, even if they
amount to little.
