REACTION PAPER

PHIL TIMOTHY B. SEMBRANO

GOMBURZA BY PEPE DIOKNO & RODY VERA
HISTORICAL FILM

There are three Filipino priests, Padre Mariano Gómez, Padre José Burgos, Padre Jacinto
Zamora, better known as GOMBURZA, their experience was intense, during the Spanish
occupation, these three priests were accused of being the perpetrators of the strike in Cavite,
even though there was no solid evidence, they were killed along with Palaez, Palaez was the
one who accused these three priests. So they had a strong experience of the injustice of the
Spanish rule.

The colonial government feared the growing influence of the secular priests so they tried to
suppress it. The struggle between the friars and the secular priests became a major reason for
their demise. Instead of being given a fair trial, they were made scapegoats for a strike in which
they had no involvement. It showed the corruption and oppression under Spanish rule, where
justice was easily distorted for the personal interests of those in power.

Their execution by garrote in 1872 was not only a punishment for a crime they did not commit,
but also a warning to Filipinos seeking change. But instead of causing fear, the spirit of freedom
in the hearts of the Filipinos ignited even more. José Rizal was greatly sad by their fate and
dedicated his novel El Filibusterismo to GOMBURZA in order to expose the injustices of
Spanish tyranny. Furthermore, their deaths prompted the foundation of the Katipunan and the
start of the Philippine Revolution.

The illegal death of GOMBURZA serves as a bitter reminder of the injustices that occurred
under Spanish authority.Although a great loss for Filipinos, they became a symbol of resistance
and hope. History has shown that oppression only strengthens the oppressed. After being
imprisoned and killed without evidence their sacrifice enabled the Philippines' independence.
Their legacy reminds us of the value of justice, truth, and the never-ending fight for freedom.
