Thelma Fajardo 4:41 P.M.

Hi, everyone. I just got out of my meeting with the board of directors.

Karen Green 4:42 P.M.

How’d it go? It seemed important with all the department supervisors present.

Thelma Fajardo 4:42 P.M.

Well, on the one hand, the company’s software application continues to bring in substantial
revenues. On the other hand, sales are slowing down and are predicted to continue on a downward
trend.

Philip Nordberg 4:43 P.M.

Isn’t that a problem for other departments...like sales and marketing or product development?

Thelma Fajardo 4:44 P.M.

For the most part. However, the board has decided that in response to this development, they’d like
us to cut down on administrative costs.

Karen Green 4:44 P.M.

How much do they want to cut? We’re not going to lose staff, are we?

Thelma Fajardo 4:45 P.M.

Nothing as drastic as that, Karen. But they are looking for a reduction of about 10 percent, which
could mean finding new suppliers and service providers, and making other adjustments around the
office. I’d like you all to come up with ideas. We’ll discuss them next week.

Questions 165-167 refer to the following article.

The Retail Robot Takeover

By Melanie Furman

For decades, futuristic books, movies, and television shows

have predicted the way that robots would take over elements
of daily life. Society has not yet seen a huge development of
robots completing everyday tasks at home or at work.
However, a change has occurred in the retail industry. Robots
are being introduced in stores, stockrooms, and warehouses.

Retail robots have been and are being designed for several
jobs that are currently done by humans with equipment and
computers. New robots can greet customers, help find a
product, and take inventory. The devices can use verbal
commands, a touch screen, or a bar code scanner to interact
with customers. Robots are efficient yet they lack
understanding of emotion and that affects decision-making.
Will they develop those capabilities over the next 20 years as
predicted? We don’t know, but the conditions are favorable.

165. What is the topic of the article? 167. What is stated as a problem with robots?
(A) Information about bar code scanners (A) They break down too easily.
(B) A futuristic television show review (B) They do not understand emotions.
(C) The use of automated devices in stores (C) They are expensive to produce.
(D) A forecast for the retail job market (D) They require a lot of maintenance.

166. Which is NOT one of the responsibilities

that robots can take over at present?
(A) Taking inventory in a store
(B) Identifying a product on a shelf
(C) Greeting customers as they enter
(D) Making choices based on emotion
Questions 168-171 refer to the following notice.

Attention Transit Line Public Bus Service customers:

We do not allow pets aboard the buses, except for service dogs who are
wearing tags to show that they are properly trained and licensed. This policy
includes small animals that can be carried in a purse or a pocket, or that can
be easily hidden. Animals in an enclosed environment such as a bus can cause
many problems. They may disturb passengers and destroy property. In some
cases, animal odor is offensive to people and could cause an allergic reaction.
Our no animal policy is part of our commitment to keeping our buses safe and
clean for all passengers.

We also ask that bus passengers do not interact with service dogs while they
are on the bus. These dogs are working for their owners, helping them to
travel to a destination safely. The dogs must be allowed to focus on their
responsibilities. Passenger interactions could be a distraction to the dogs and
keep them from assisting their owners fully.

If a passenger chooses to violate the policy, that passenger may be

immediately removed from the bus. Repeat offenders will face a fine. All pet
owners will be held responsible for any damages caused by their animal. If
you have any questions on this policy, call Transit Line service at 555-9786.

168. What is the purpose of the notice? 170. What are passengers asked not to do?
(A) To communicate a rule (A) Talk loudly aboard a bus
(B) To show commitment to pet safety (B) Feed a hungry animal
(C) To identify offensive passengers (C) Bring strong-smelling food on buses
(D) To levy a fine for a violation (D) Interact with service dogs

Dear Mr. Duncan,

Thank you for applying to be a publicist at our organization. Your skills meet our qualifications, and
we’re interested in moving forward with your application.
There are two steps left in this process. First, please take a look at the press release attached to this
e-mail. It is full of errors, and I want you to make a list of as many mistakes as you can find.

Next, please bring this list to a formal job interview on May 15 at 1 p.m. Because our human resources
center is undergoing repairs, we will meet at the Desert Sands coffee shop on West Street instead of at
the Chapman Center.
We look forward to meeting you.

Record Car Sales in April

Paris, May 4 - France recorded its biggest monthly car sales in over a decade, with more
than 400,000 new vehicles registered in April. Gabriel Coudert, head of the Automobile
Manufacturers’ Association, believes this is due to several factors, among them an
improved job market and advances in fuel-saving technology. Vitelle Motors president Marc
Girard concurs. “People feel more confident about spending when they have jobs. Plus, gas
prices are low and fuel efficiency is the best it’s ever been.” Nadine Busque, an analyst for
Argent Financial, adds that highly attractive loan packages have also provided a boost. Not
only have banks extended low-interest loans, but the government’s policy of providing tax
credits to people who buy economical cars makes ownership more attractive. “However,” as
Ms. Busque points out, “consumers should keep in mind that if the economy continues to
improve, interest rates will also climb.” For now, vehicle sales to private customers have
risen 4.1 percent compared to the year before, while sales to businesses have gone up by
5.8 percent.

Dear Mr. Tudor,

My name is Kristin Feinstein, and I am the founder and president of CostWatch, a service
that allows customers to compare product prices online. I heard you speak at Santa Clara
University recently and found your discussion of computers that can teach themselves highly
intriguing. I was wondering if you could deliver a presentation on the same subject to our
software engineers. I think that it could be relevant to a new product we are developing that
permits users to look up information about an object simply by scanning it with a phone or
tablet camera. Please let me know if you would be interested, and what it might cost.

I look forward to your response.

Sincerely,

Dear Ms. Feinstein,

Thanks for reaching out to me. I would be happy to give a presentation at your company’s offices. I
can see how the subject of my talk might have some relevance to your application. However, my
next availability isn’t until November 12.

Also, I need to know how long you’d like me to speak. I can keep the length of my presentation to as
little as 15 minutes or expand it to as much as 45 minutes, and leave 20 to 30 minutes for questions.
Your answer will determine my speaking fee.

In addition, I will require that you cover the costs of transportation from my office and the hand-outs
I’ll be giving. I shouldn’t need a hotel room unless you plan to engage my services for more than a
day. Please call me at 555-2049 to schedule a meeting in person.

Date: February 28

Dear Mr. Stanley,

The weather warning has been lifted and the State Spelling Bee will proceed as planned. As a
reminder, participants are asked to report to the venue at least one hour before the competition
begins. Once there, they must sign in at the front desk before proceeding to the seating area.
Participants who arrive after the competition has begun will be disqualified, as will anyone seen
consulting outside sources during the competition.
The top three spellers will receive individual prizes from this year’s sponsors, while the state
champion will, in addition, receive an all-expenses paid trip to the National Championship. All
registered participants, regardless of how they perform, will receive certificates of distinction.
Good luck and I look forward to seeing you on the day of the competition.
