Course outline for IELTS

IELTS has 4 modules that includes

Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking.

1. IELTS Listening (Same for Academic & General)

Duration: 30 minutes + 10 minutes transfer time

Format: 4 sections, 40 questions total

Section Breakdown:

Part 1: Conversation between two people in an everyday social context (e.g., booking a hotel).

Part 2: Monologue in a social context (e.g., speech about local facilities).

Part 3: Conversation among up to four people in an educational or training context (e.g., university discussion).

Part 4: Monologue on an academic topic (e.g., a university lecture).

Question Types:

Multiple choice

Matching

Plan/map/diagram labeling

Form/note/table/flow-chart/summary completion

Sentence completion

Short-answer questions

2. IELTS Reading:

Duration: 60 minutes

Format: 3 sections, 40 questions total

Academic Reading:

Texts taken from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers—suitable for students entering university or
professional institutions.

General Training Reading:

Extracts from books, magazines, advertisements, notices, company handbooks, and guidelines.

Divided into:

Section 1: Everyday topics (e.g., social survival, advertisements).

Section 2: Work-related topics (e.g., company policies).

Section 3: One longer passage of general interest.

Question Types (Both versions):

Multiple choice

Identifying information (True/False/Not Given)


Identifying writer’s views (Yes/No/Not Given)

Matching information/headings/features/sentence endings

Sentence/note/summary/diagram/table/flow-chart completion

Short-answer questions

3. IELTS Writing

Duration: 60 minutes

Tasks: 2 writing tasks

Academic Writing:

Task 1: Describe visual data (e.g., graphs, charts, maps, or diagrams) in at least 150 words.

Task 2: Respond to an argument or problem (250 words). More formal.

General Training Writing:

Task 1: Write a letter (formal, semi-formal, or informal) in at least 150 words.

Task 2: Essay response to a point of view, argument, or problem (250 words).

Assessment Criteria:

Task achievement/response

Coherence and cohesion

Lexical resource (vocabulary)

Grammatical range and accuracy

4. IELTS Speaking (Same for Academic & General)

Duration: 11–14 minutes

Format: 3 parts, face-to-face interview with a certified examiner

Part 1 – Introduction and Interview (4–5 mins):

General questions about the candidate (home, family, work, interests, studies).

Part 2 – Long Turn (3–4 mins):

Candidate is given a task card with a topic and has 1 minute to prepare, then speaks for 1–2 minutes.

Part 3 – Discussion (4–5 mins):

Two-way discussion with the examiner related to Part 2 topic.

Evaluation Areas:

Fluency and coherence

Lexical resources

Grammatical range and accuracy

Pronunciation.
