Title: The Overqualified Applicant
Characters:
Emma: An overqualified and eccentric job applicant.
Mr. Thompson: The nervous and straight-laced hiring manager.
Jake: The laid-back office joker.
Bryan: The kind-hearted receptionist who loves cats.
Ms. Caldwell: The no-nonsense office manager.
Setting: A small, cramped office with a cluttered desk. Various office supplies are scattered
around, and a coffee machine hums in the background. Mr. Thompson is sitting behind the
desk, looking over Emma's resume.
Act 1, Scene 1: The Interview
Mr. Thompson adjusts his glasses and looks at Emma’s resume while Emma fidgets with a
paperclip.
Mr. Thompson: (adjusting his glasses) Well, Emma, your resume is... impressive. I see you
have a Ph.D. in Astrophysics?
Emma: (cheerfully) Yes! I figured if I can understand black holes, I can definitely handle the
mysteries of office supply inventory.
Mr. Thompson: (confused) Right. And it says here you once worked as a lion tamer?
Emma: (nodding enthusiastically) Oh yes, those skills are very transferable. If you can
handle a lion, you can definitely handle a stubborn photocopier.
Ms. Caldwell enters, holding a clipboard, and stands behind Mr. Thompson.
Ms. Caldwell: (sternly) What's this about a lion?
Mr. Thompson: (trying to stay composed) Emma here used to be a lion tamer. And her most
recent job was as a submarine captain.
Emma: (leaning in, whispering) The pressure down there really prepares you for office
politics.
Ms. Caldwell: (raising an eyebrow) I see. And why do you want to work here at Dunder
Mifflin Paper Company?
Emma: (thinking) Well, for one, it's above sea level. But mostly, I heard you have the best
coffee in town. I'm a bit of a caffeine enthusiast.
Jake, the office joker, pokes his head in the door.
Jake: (grinning) Did someone say coffee? I make a mean espresso.
Mr. Thompson: (nervously laughing) Well, we do have good coffee. But this position is for
an office assistant. It might be... a bit mundane for someone with your background.
Emma: (seriously) Mr. Thompson, I need this job. My cat, Professor Whiskers, is used to a
certain standard of living. And he's very demanding.
Bryan: (popping up from behind her desk) Did you say cat? I love cats!
Mr. Thompson: (raising an eyebrow) Your cat?
Emma: (nodding solemnly) Yes. He has a taste for the finer things in life. Plus, I really need
the dental plan. Have you seen the cost of braces for a cat?
Ms. Caldwell: (trying not to laugh) I'm not sure we cover feline orthodontics.
Emma: (leaning back, sighing dramatically) Well, that’s disappointing. But I'm willing to
negotiate. How about you throw in some tuna cans and we call it a deal?
Mr. Thompson: (laughing) You know what, Emma? You're hired. I think we could use a
little... unpredictability around here.
Emma: (jumping up and shaking his hand vigorously) Fantastic! You won't regret it. Just
wait until you see my spreadsheet skills. They're legendary.
Ms. Caldwell: (sighing) Welcome to the team, Emma. And... good luck with Professor
Whiskers.
Emma: (winking) Thanks! He's a tough boss, but I'll manage.
The scene fades out as Emma and the team share a laugh, and Emma starts setting up her
new desk, pulling out an astrolabe and a lion-taming whip.
Act 2, Scene 1: Emma’s First Day
The office is buzzing with activity. Emma is at her desk, trying to figure out the photocopier.
Jake saunters over with a cup of coffee.
Jake: Need some help with that beast?
Emma: (smiling) If I can tame a lion, I can tame this. But some coffee would be nice.
Jake: (handing her the cup) Welcome to the jungle.
Bryan: (joining them) How's Professor Whiskers?
Emma: (sighing) Demanding as ever. He’s very particular about his tuna.
Ms. Caldwell: (walking by) Speaking of demanding, we need those inventory reports by
noon.
Emma: (saluting) Aye aye, captain!
Mr. Thompson peeks out of his office, looking stressed.
Mr. Thompson: Emma, do you have a moment?
Emma: (standing up) Of course. What's up?
Mr. Thompson: (whispering) Can you help me fix the coffee machine? It's making a weird
noise.
Emma: (grinning) Leave it to me. I’ve fixed submarines, remember?
Emma heads to the break room with Mr. Thompson. The rest of the office watches in
amusement.
Jake: (whispering to Lisa) I think she’s going to fit in just fine.
Bryan: (nodding) Definitely. And maybe she can finally get that photocopier to behave.
Act 2, Scene 2: The Office Party
The office is decorated with streamers and balloons for a surprise party. Emma is mingling
with her new colleagues, holding a plate of cake.
Ms. Caldwell: (raising a glass) To Emma, our new office assistant and resident lion tamer!
Welcome aboard!
Emma: (laughing) Thanks, everyone! And remember, if anyone needs help with underwater
navigation, I’m your girl.
Jake: (raising his glass) And to Professor Whiskers, may his tuna always be fresh!
Everyone laughs and cheers. The camera pans out as the party continues, with Emma in the
center, surrounded by her new friends.
Act 3, Scene 1: The Big Presentation
The office is in a flurry of activity as they prepare for a big client presentation. Emma is in
charge of the slideshow.
Mr. Thompson: (nervously) Emma, how’s the presentation coming along?
Emma: (confidently) Don’t worry, Mr. Thompson. I’ve got it all under control.
Ms. Caldwell: (handing Emma a stack of papers) These need to be included.
Emma: (taking the papers) Got it. And don’t worry, I won’t use any lion-taming analogies.
This time.
Bryan: (whispering to Jake) I kind of hope she does.
The clients arrive, and everyone takes their seats. Emma starts the presentation, and
everything runs smoothly. The clients are impressed.
Client 1: (smiling) Excellent work. We’re looking forward to working with you.
Client 2: (nodding) And that lion-taming analogy? Brilliant.
Mr. Thompson: (relieved) Thank you, Emma. You were fantastic.
Emma: (grinning) Just another day at the office.
Act 3, Scene 2: The Aftermath
The office is winding down after the successful presentation. Emma is at her desk, tidying up.
Ms. Caldwell: (approaching Emma) You did great today.
Emma: (smiling) Thanks, Ms. Caldwell. I’m really enjoying it here.
Jake: (joining them) We should celebrate. How about a coffee run?
Emma: (laughing) Sounds perfect.
Bryan: (excitedly) And maybe we can get some treats for Professor Whiskers!
The team heads out together, chatting and laughing. The camera lingers on Emma’s empty
desk, with a picture of Professor Whiskers in a little frame.
End Scene
The screen fades to black as the credits roll, with a final shot of Emma and her new
colleagues walking out the door, ready for their next adventure.
