Tree of the Dead

A Scenario for Rangers Level 10+

By Chuck Green of Wizard of the Ozarks

While traveling between missions, you and your companions have come upon a small fog choked valley filled
with red leafed and white barked weirwood trees. Vibrant colors, these trees would normally cause you to pause
and wonder at their beauty. Now, it only reminds you of the blood that has been spilt since the Shadow Deep
has encroached on both Lorenthia and Alladore. A small stream cuts through the valley and beside the stream
sits a small cottage. Wood smoke pours from the building’s chimney, a building that should be empty. You decide
to investigate.

MINIATURES NEEDED:
For this mission, you will likely need the following:
• Zombies 4+
• Giant Spiders 4+
• Red Hand Clan Goblin 4+
• Blood Flower 2+
• Red Hand Clan Goblin Shaman 1
• River Monster 1
• Civilian 4

SET-UP
This scenario should be played on a 3’x3’ game board. Designate one corner as the heroes’ starting
point (labeled Ranger Corner on the included map). In the opposite corner, place a small building,
shed, or barn. With a deep fast-moving
stream, split the game board in half, and
include a small bridge across. On the
ranger’s side of the board, place a small
cottage or cabin. Place lots of trees across
the entire board, including as many red
leafed weirwood trees as you can manage.
Designate one of the weirwood trees as a
dead tree. Randomly choose four trees and
place a giant spider in each one. Randomly
place four zombies across the board.
Adjacent to the shed, place a Red Hand
Clan Goblin Shaman and four goblins.
Place four civilians inside of the cottage.
Lastly, place a clue marker in the cottage,
in the shed, and four more randomly across
the board.

SPECIAL RULES
A Target Point exists for the goblins only. The Target Point is the cottage. The goblin shaman will
not go farther than 4” from the shed. He will stay near the shed while his minions attempt to attack
the cottage and its occupants. If any hero gets within 10” of the dead weirwood tree, place two
blood flowers at its base. Treat these as uncontrolled monsters for the rest of the scenario. When
the first hero gets within 4” of the stream, place a river monster at the closest stream point near the
hero. Treat this as an uncontrolled monster for the rest of the scenario.
Once the heroes have reached the cottage, they discover the four civilians, but find that three of
them will not leave the safety of the house. The only civilian who will join your group as a
companion, much less defend themselves against monsters, is a grizzled old veteran soldier. He
will be met wearing his old chain mail and armed to the teeth!

Move Fight Shoot Armour Will Health
6 +3 +2 12 +4 10
Notes: Hand Weapon (axe), Shield, Light Armour (chain mail), Bow, Quiver, (1) Potion of
Healing, Ancient Lore +4, Heroic Ability: Parry.

The old veteran will fight willingly for the rest of this scenario and may be hired afterwards for his
recruitment points. He detests the Shadow Deep and despises what it has accomplished against his
native Lorenthia. He can make a strong new companion with powerful potential!

NEW ITEMS

THE BLOODSTONE OF LUVON

According to sages, this is 1 of 3 parts needed to complete the Scepter of Luvon, a powerful ancient
relic created by the Elven wizard Alaion more than a thousand years ago. The whereabouts of the
three pieces have been lost for centuries. This priceless item must be delivered to Alladore for
study immediately! The scepter’s potent powers could be a valuable weapon against the forces of
the Shadow Deep.

NEW MONSTERS

BLOOD FLOWER
A colorful wide leafed plant with long pointed thorns, once activated will zip across terrain
seeking its warm meal. It moves toward the closest prey and will even make a double move if it
can not reach in one movement. When it does strike, it heals 1 health point if it deals damage.

RED HAND CLAN GOBLIN

Nasty creatures. These goblinoids are more bold and bloodthirsty than most of their race. Armed
with sharp swords and daggers, the warriors will not flee from a fight. Even more dangerous are
the magic wielding shamans that sometimes accompany the groups of warriors. They are serious
about doing their work for the Shadow Deep.

RIVER MONSTER
A long heavily armored creature with 4
legs and surprising speed, this creature
has a huge mouth full of razor-sharp
teeth, and a powerful tail. This beast is
what nightmares are made of! If a hero
gets within 2” of the shore, it bursts
from the water and attacks! When it
strikes, if it rolls a natural 19 or 20, it
pulls its victim back down into the river
to drown it. An unfortunate hero in the water with the river monster must make an immediate
Strength Roll (TN19) to free themselves and reach the shore or lose their next activation.
