Ancient Origins
Tennis traces its roots back to a 12th-century French game called "jeu de
paume" (game of the palm), where players hit a ball with their hands.
Over time, rackets were introduced in the 16th century.
Early forms were played indoors and known as real tennis or royal tennis.
Modern Tennis (Lawn Tennis)
Inventor: Major Walter Clopton Wingfield.

Name: Originally called Sphairistikè, later became "lawn tennis."
