Classic Serial - The Complete Smiley - The Karla Trilogy - Tinker, Tailor, Soldier,

Spy

Dramatisation by Shaun McKenna of John le Carre's classic novel featuring

intelligence officer George Smiley. Simon Russell Beale stars.

Wrestling with retirement and disillusionment, Smiley is summoned to a secret

meeting with a member of the Cabinet Office. Evidence has emerged of infiltration
at the highest level by a Russian agent. "Find the mole, George. Clean the stables.
Do whatever is necessary," Smiley is told. Reluctantly, he agrees, embarking on a
dark journey into his past a past filled with love, duplicity and betrayal.

Told across three hours, this is an epic depiction of the complicated moral
dilemmas of the people quietly out-manoeuvring each other in the Cold War. Smiley's
investigation takes him through the post-war world of espionage from old colleagues
to current adversaries.

Review From The Radio Times

These John le Carr radio dramatisations have been one of the highlights of the
year and we now reach arguably his most famous tale of espionage. Simon Russell
Beale remains suitably brooding and precise as George Smiley, this time called upon
to spy on the spymasters in order to identify a Soviet mole buried deep in the
British Intelligence Service. The plotting is complex (and deserving of the three-
part treatment), while the world of "the Circus" with its safe houses and
"scalphunters" is brought to vivid life in a steely production that certainly puts
the cold into Cold War.
