Subject: Motivation Letter for admission to the University of Pretoria
Dear Admissions Committee,
I am writing to formally request admission to the University of Pretoria. I was last registered
at the university in 2021 for the Bcom in Statistics and Data Science Degree, but I
unfortunately had to deregister a few months into the academic year due to severe personal,
financial, and logistical challenges that made it impossible for me to continue my studies at
the time.
When I first enrolled, the COVID-19 pandemic forced all learning online, and I lacked access
to essential resources like a laptop, internet, and a quiet space to study, which made it nearly
impossible to keep up. At the same time, my family was evicted from our home in Orlando
West, Soweto, and we faced serious financial hardship—no one was employed, and I couldn’t
access financial aid for tuition or afford transport to campus. These challenges left me
overwhelmed and unable to cope academically, emotionally, and financially. I made the
difficult decision to deregister, not because I lacked motivation, but because I needed time to
stabilize my situation. I’m now in a much better position, having taken real steps to overcome
those barriers, and I’m fully prepared to return and succeed.
Since then, I have made real progress in rebuilding my path. I am currently enrolled in an 18-
month Data Science Learnership at Momentum Investments which concludes in December
2025, where I’ve gained valuable technical and professional experience. This opportunity has
allowed me to develop key skills such as Python programming, statistical modelling, and
financial data analysis. This experience is also giving me valuable insight into the type of
work I want to do long-term. I’ve developed a strong interest in statistical modelling and
quantitative problem-solving, and I now realize that the BSc in Mathematical Statistics is
better aligned with my career goal of becoming a quantitative analyst. I am confident that
with the foundation I have built during my learnership, I will now be able to approach my
studies with purpose, discipline, and resilience. More importantly, it has provided me with a
monthly stipend, enabling me to manage my finances, support my living costs, and prepare
for further studies.
The BSc Mathematical Statistics programme at the University of Pretoria offers the perfect
starting point for someone aiming to become a quantitative analyst. The financial orientation
option is especially appealing, as it connects mathematical theory with real-world financial
applications something I’m deeply interested in. This combination of statistical modelling and
financial insight is exactly what’s needed to thrive in today’s data-driven finance industry.
As part of this opportunity (Learnership), the company (Momentum Investments) has shown
strong support for my academic ambitions and has expressed a willingness to fully fund my
university studies so that I can pursue my goal of becoming a quantitative analyst. which
includes covering tuition fees, learning materials, and other essential academic needs. This
financial support will remove the barriers that previously affected my academic journey, such
as not being able to afford a laptop, data, or accommodation near campus. With these needs
now being taken care of, I will be able to focus entirely on my studies without the constant
stress of financial uncertainty. This backing will not only give me the practical means to
return but has also boosted my motivation and confidence to complete my degree and work
toward my goal of becoming a quantitative analyst.
This opportunity has given me direction, purpose, and a strong work ethic. It has also helped
me understand the value of formal education in reaching my ambition of becoming a
quantitative analyst. The learnership has also instilled the kind of discipline, structure, and
confidence required for me to be a success at the university.
I truly believe my past experiences are not the end of my academic journey, but rather a
learning curve. I have learned the importance of planning ahead, seeking support early, and
staying committed even in tough times. I am ready to apply those lessons and make a
meaningful comeback at the University of Pretoria.
Attached to this letter, you will find my learnership appointment documentation from
Momentum Investments.
Thank you for considering my application for admission. I am genuinely passionate about
returning to University of Pretoria, completing my degree, and making the most of the
opportunities ahead.
Sincerely,
Oscar Rikhotso
