Learning Experiences/ Insights:

Our visit to the DPWH project in Baguio City taught me about
the challenges of repairing a collapsed road in steep terrain. The engineers
explained that the collapse was caused by seepage failure, which
weakened the soil. To address this, they are building a retaining wall to
stabilize the slope and prevent further damage. I learned about the
importance of the interface between the stem and footing, which ensures
the wall’s strength and stability.
They also shared the design considerations, like using 75 mm clay
soil FDT and embedding the footing 4 meters deep for added support. The
use of micro filling improves the soil’s load-bearing capacity, ensuring the
structure remains stable over time. They are also using HDPE materials,
which can last 25-30 years, to handle drainage and seepage effectively.
This project showed me the importance of proper design and materials in
addressing geotechnical issues. It was impressive to see how DPWH uses
engineering solutions to tackle problems caused by natural conditions.
Overall, the experience gave me a better appreciation for the complexity
and importance of slope stabilization projects.
