Many people think modern communication technology is having some negative
effects on social relationships. Do you agree or disagree?
In recent years, there have been growing concerns from the community about
technology. A school of thought holds that the development of technology
employed in communication has left adverse impacts on social relationships.
While there are admittedly several disadvantages of modern communication
tools, I believe that the positive effects of those devices are more glaring.
On the one hand, proponents of this view claim that it would cause detrimental
consequences for relationships between individuals. Chief among the reasons is
that overusing electronic devices to communicate might lead to social isolation
and depression. This view emphasizes that the younger generation, for example,
has a tendency to chat online with friends or family instead of interacting face-
to-face; therefore, youth could not convey their emotions and gradually weaken
their family bonds.
On the other hand, advocates for modern communication devices argue that
they could have two principal merits. Firstly, it is the out - standing
development of technology that makes communication become increasingly
convenient and time - saving. For instance, in the past, writing letters as a
means to keep in contact with relatives living overseas takes individuals several
days to receive a response while in recent decades, thanks to the invention of
electronic devices, namely smart phones, it only takes a few minutes to send
messages or emails. Secondly, technological advances might foster global
connections. It is believed that people are empowered to have numerous
opportunities to make friends all over the world and strengthen relationships via
online platforms such as Facebook without concerning about geographical
distance.
In conclusion, while modern forms of communication are not without
drawbacks, I would contend that the given benefits make it a worthwhile path.
