THE NIGHT OF MIRACLES


CHARACTERS

 Mary – A young woman who is pregnant with Jesus Christ, the son of God.
 Joseph – Mary’s husband-to-be, who is supportive and loving throughout the
play.
 Innkeeper – The owner of the inn where Mary and Joseph initially seek shelter.
 Shepherds – A group of three humble shepherds who follow a star to find the
newborn king.
 Angels -Three angels, in which one would visit Mary, and the other will visit
Joseph, and they will all (the three of them) then visit Mary and Joseph at the
stable.
 Wise men – They are a group of three wise men who follow a star to locate the
newborn king of Jews.
 King (Harod) – A wicked king who will send guards to go and kill all newborns
since he had that a new born king has been born.
 Elizabeth – Mary’s cousin, in which, Mary will inform about her pregnancy of
God’s child.
 Zacharia – The husband of Elizabeth, in which an angel will tell him that his
wife and him will take care of God’s son.
 Narrator (optional) – A character who can be added to provide exposition and
narrate certain scenes.
 Guards – Two guards who will be sent by king Herod, to go and kill the
newborn king. They also kill all newborns along the road.
 Sellers – who will be selling for Mary and Joseph, when they get to some place
of their journey.
 Messenger – Someone who will be sent by king Harod to announce the census.
ACT 1:
Scene 1:
An Angel visits Mary and tells her she will conceive of God’s child.
Scene 2:

Another angel visits Joseph whiles he sleeps, and tells him that, he should accept the
baby, because it is God’s son. He should also apologize to Mary and take care of the
unborn baby.
Scene 3:
Joseph goes to visit Mary and apologize to her, and tells her, he will assist her in taking
good care of God’s son.

Scene 4:
Mary informs her cousin Elizabeth about the message she got from the Angel. Whiles
they converse bout the message, Elizabeth’s husband Zacharia appears and they both
tell him about the message from the Angel, concerning the pregnancy of God’s son.

ACT 2:
Scene 1:
(Inside the Temple)
The king sent a messenger to announce to the people that a census will be organized,
therefore they should all go to their towns for the census.
Scene 2:
The messenger announces the information about the census to the people. He also
gossips about the king.
Scene 3:
They were on their way to Bethlehem, whiles Mary was still pregnant, they found an Inn
along the way when Mary was feeling some pains in her tummy.
Mary: “Joseph, I’m having contractions. We need to find a place to stay”.
Joseph: “I know, but everywhere is full because of the census”.
Scene 4:
They stop at an Inn where Joseph will go and ask about the Inn, whether there is space
for them to rest or not.
(Inside the Inn)
Innkeeper: “Sorry, there’s no room here. You’ll have to find somewhere else”.
Mary: “But we’re expecting a baby. Can’t you make an exception?”.
Innkeeper: “I’m sorry, but I can’t help it. You’ll have to go somewhere else”.
Mary: “Joseph, what are we going to do? We have nowhere to go”.

Joseph: “Don’t worry, Mary. God will provide for us”.

ACT 3:
Scene 1:
The three wise men visited the king, to ask of the newborn king. Since the king (Harod)
did not know about a newborn king, he told the wise men to go and look for the newborn
king, and if they find him, they should tell him so that he will also worship him. But he
had an intention to kill him.
Scene 2:
Whiles they were going, an angel appeared and told them that if they find the newborn
king, they should not go back to tell king Harod. They agreed and the angel told them
to follow the star that was brighten in the skies for that’s where they will find the
newborn king and worship him.
Scene 3:
King Harod then orders one of his warriors to follow the wise men and kill the newborn
king of Jews and also all newborn children in the town.
Scene 4:
Mary and Joseph on their way stop at the borders of Bethlehem, whiles Joseph buys
something for Mary to eat. After they had left, the warrior who was sent by king Harod,
starts to kill the newborn children of the sellers at the border, and then leaves after
getting an information from one of the sellers about Mary being pregnant. He leaves
and follows the directions of Mary and Joseph.

ACT 4:
Scene 1:
An angel appears at the shepherds and inform them about the king who is about to be
born. The angel then tells them to follow the star and they will find the newborn king.
Scene 2:
Joseph and Mary did not find a place for Mary to give birth since all rest houses where
full in Bethlehem. They then located an opened manger and went in there for Mary to
give birth, also the bright star was shining in there.
(Inside the Stable)
Mary: “Joseph, this is it. This is where our baby will be born”.
Joseph: Yes, it may not be what we expected, but it’s where our son will be born”.
Scene 3:
(Inside the Stable)

(Enter Three Wise Men)


Wise Man 1: “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We have come to worship him”.
Mary: “Here he is. our son has been born in this stable”.
Wise Man 2: “Let us worship him”. (Wise Men present their gifts to the baby).

Scene 4:
(Inside the Stable)
(Enter Shepherds)
Shepherd 1: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”.
Shepherd 2: “We have seen the newborn king of Jews. Let us go and worship”.
Mary: “Thank you for coming to see our son”.
(The Shepherds present their gifts to the baby.)
Scene 5:
(Inside the Stable)
(Angels Enter)
Angel 1: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”.
Angel 2: ‘This is what the Lord has sent us to say: You will have a son, and you will
give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins”.
Mary and Joseph look at each other in awe.
Scene 6:
(Outside the Stable)
(Enter Herod’s Soldiers)
Soldier 1: “Where is the newborn king of Jews? We were told his star would appear. We
must find him and kill him”.
Joseph receives a warning in a dream and decides to flee with Mary and Jesus to Egypt.
