Rochdale Pioneers: (21-12-1844)

• The Rochdale Weavers Union was the first Trade Union started in England.

• Rochdale Weavers Union started by Charles Howarth in 1824.

• Rochdale Friendly Society started in 1830

• Members in Rochdale Friendly Society have 60 flannel weavers.

• It was they who were responsible for the origin and development of consumers co-
operation in England.

• They mobilized 28 Flannel Weavers Joined together (including a woman by name

ANTYUTEL) by contributing '1' pound each for bulk purchase of consumer articles and
organized a cooperative society in 1843.

• This is the origin and development of consumers Co-operation in England and

this Society named Rochdale Equitable Pioneer Society

• The Rochdale Pioneers society was registered on 24 October 1844.

• The store commenced its business started on 21st December, 1844 at No 2 Toad Lane in
Rochdale.

• So such Society was also called No 2 Toad Lane Store

• The store was registered under the 'Friendly Societies Act 1793

• The first successful cooperative society in the world Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society

• Rochdale is situated near Manchester in the north Western part of England

• Rochdale Pioneers started as a Consumer Society.

• First President of Rochdale Society – Charles Howarth (Idea of dividend invented)

• He was known as Constitution maker of Co-operative movement in England

• First Secretary of Rochdale Pioneer Society- James Daly


• First temporary President of Rochdale Society – Miles Ashworth

• Eliza Brierley was the first woman member of the Rochdale Pioneer Society admitted in
March 1846

• Rochdale Pioneers entered into wholesale trade in the year - 1855

• Members of Rochdale Pioneers worked as salesman

• The society handled only very few items of consumer articles such as flour, butter,
candle, sugar, soap etc...

• “To be safe we must sell at a profit, to be honest we must sell at a profit”- is the motto of
Rochdale Pioneers

• “Honesty, Openness and Respect are the principles followed by REP Society

• “Self-help is the best help” said by Rochdale Pioneers

• In 1852, the Industrial and Provident Societies Act was passed by the British Parliament
which gave these societies legal protection.

• The Amendment of this Act in 1862

They give final shape for co-operative Principles in their Conference in 1860

after 16 years of the starting of the store which are detailed below:-

▪ Democratic Control

▪ Limited Interest on Share Capital

▪ Distributive justice (Patronage Dividend)

▪ Cash Trading

▪ Political and Religious neutrality

▪ Selling pure and unadulterated goods

• The Rochdale people were the founders of the principles of co- operation which
formed the basis for the internationally accept of co operative principles by ICA
