Portfolio: - The State of Eritrea
Committee: - United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)
Agenda: - Deliberation upon the status of asylum seekers and climate induced migration
In today’s day and age, refugee is quite a common word known to mankind. Though it isn’t
particularly pleasant, most countries in the world inhabit refugees and many international
organizations have been sought for the same. Many people are not aware of the difference
between a refugee and an asylum seekers. Though the difference is small, it is important. An
asylum seeker is someone is who is seeking protection. Their request for refuge has to be
processed yet, or they may not have done so, but planning to do so in the future.
The State of Eritrea has faced a range of problems due to its interactions with other countries,
primarily stemming from geopolitical interests, historical conflicts, and international
sanctions. Further, like many countries, it faces challenges related to asylum seekers, and
steps taken by the government can be seen in the implementation of such motives; Bilateral
Relations and Peace Agreements, Regional Cooperation and Initiatives, National and
Infrastructure Development programs, Rural Development Programs.
A vulnerable country like Eritrea where its citizens are forced to migrate, with its past of
constant border conflicts and wars with its neighbouring nations and climate crisis due to
carbon emission from western countries including the problems faced after seeking refuge
and migration in different countries leads to its citizens feeling unsafe and unsecure.
In conclusion, the delegate believes that a solution can be easily concluded for this problem.
Though there can be a range of proposed solutions, the sole most effective one has to lie in
unity and cooperation between states. Wealthier and economically funded nations should, in
such situations, be of help to low economy countries and live in peace and sustainability.
