Gangā Stotram beginning with "Devi Sureshvari Bhagavati Gange", composed by Adi Shankaracharya,
along with English transliteration and meaning for each verse.
1.
Devi Sureshvari Bhagavati Gange
Tribhuvana-tāriṇi Tarala-taraṅge |
Shaṅkara-mauli-vihāriṇi Vimale
Mama Matir āstāṁ Tava Pada-kamale ||
Meaning:
O Goddess Ganga! Divine queen of the gods,
Your waves swiftly flow, liberating the three worlds.
Pure and shining, you reside on Lord Shiva’s head —
May my mind always dwell at your lotus feet.
2.
Bhagīratha-sūta-nātanubhūta
Nāhaṁ Jānāmi Tava Mahimānam |
Pāpaṁ Haraṇaṁ Puṇyakaraṁ Tvaṁ
Pāvaya Māṁ Muni-vara-sutī ||
Meaning:
O daughter of the great sage (Jahnu),
Though I cannot comprehend your greatness,
You destroy sins and grant virtue —
Please purify me, O holy daughter of the sages.
3.
Īṣat-paṭa-taraṅga-bhrama-śubhraṁ
Kiṁ Na Harasi Tvaṁ Mama Durbalatvam |
Kampita-padayor Bhaktimayaṁ
Saṅgaṁ Dattuṁ Kṛipayā Bhava ||
Meaning:
O Pure One, your garment shimmers like soft white waves,
Why won’t you remove my weaknesses?
O Compassionate One, let me unite
With your trembling, devotion-filled feet.
4.
Alaṁ Jala-nidhi-majjana-kātena
Duḥkha-bhavaṁ Na Janayati Hṛdi Te |
Kilbiṣa-kṛtāṁ Pātaka-nāśaṁ
Snāna-mātreṇa Hareḥ Smare ||
Meaning:
Merely bathing in any ocean cannot remove sorrow —
But a single dip in your holy waters
Destroys the sins of lifetimes
And brings the remembrance of Hari (Lord Vishnu).
5.
Jaya Jaya He Bhāgīrathi Bhavānī
Shaṅkara-śiras-sthite Dhṛta-vāṇī |
Bhṛgu-hari-hara-kavi-vinuta-mahimā
Muni-jana-mānasa-mānasa-vihāriṇi ||
Meaning:
Victory to you, O Bhagirathi, consort of Shiva,
Dwelling on Lord Shankara’s head, sacred in speech.
Praised by Bhrigu, Vishnu, Shiva, and poets —
You reside in the hearts of sages like a lotus in a lake.
6.
Tvam-eva Mātā Ca Pitā Tvam-eva
Tvam-eva Bandhuś-ca Sakhā Tvam-eva |
Tvam-eva Vidyā Draviṇaṁ Tvam-eva
Tvam-eva Sarvaṁ Mama Deva-deve ||
Meaning:
You alone are my mother, father,
You are my friend, companion, and wealth.
You are knowledge, prosperity, and everything to me —
You are my Supreme Lord, O divine one!
7.
Gaṅge Tvaṁ Jagatāṁ Tāriṇi
Sukha-dāyini Santataṁ Samprasannā |
Kaluṣa-vināśini Mahimotkarṣiṇi
Kalyāṇa-pradāyini Gaṅge Namaste ||
Meaning:
O Ganga! You uplift the world, always granting happiness.
Ever-pleased, destroyer of sins, glorious in divine qualities —
Bestower of auspiciousness — O Ganga, I bow to you.
