The future of English

English is already the world’s dominant language, and within one hundred years it will
probably be spoken by almost every educated person. It will also probably become the only
language everyone in the world will be able to communicate in.
It will also remain understandable because it is used in films and TV shows and the dozens of
5 online videos by bloggers and YouTubers everyone watches several times a day for very different
reasons.
And even while regional areas will probably add a few words for local consumption, the
international version of English will not change and it will be used on a global scale.
As for the other languages, only French has an international importance, and one French
10 company put out a false report claiming French would become the most spoken language due to
its use in Africa. But the French report left out all the second language English speakers in the
world and it also left out details such as the growing trend in French Africa to drop French as a
language and become English-speaking countries.
The report also failed to cover the dramatic decline of French in book publishing and in the
15 publication of scientific research. It also didn’t mention the continuing decline of French on the
internet.
So one hundred years from now, the vast majority of people on earth should be able to talk
with each other for the first time in human history. And the language they will use is English.
This brings us to one final and unexpected fact: Since this will mean no one will have to learn
20 any language other than English and their own, this will help protect and preserve all the
currently endangered languages on the planet.
