The Great Colombia
The Great Colombia
Gran Colombia is the name given to the state existing between 1821 and 1831.
whose official name was Republic of Colombia to avoid confusion with the
current Colombia.
The territory of the new nation covered an area of more than 2,000,000 km2 and was
was divided into 3 departments: Venezuela, Cundinamarca, and Quito,
with Caracas, Bogotá, and Quito respectively as their capitals. The symbols
the used patterns were the same as those of Venezuela: coat of arms, seal and
flag.
The creation of the republic of Colombia was a significant task in the development
of the war of independence of Colombia and South America, with this fact
new and broader military and political objectives were established and
the emancipatory cause gained greater strength. Until that moment, it had only been
fought for the freedom of each country respectively and in 9 years of war
he had liberated the east of Venezuela and the north of the viceroyalty. Now united in
a single effort continued the struggle to achieve a fully realized republic
independent, circumstances that motivated the campaigns of 1821 and 1822 with
which the process of release was completed.
In 1819, in the midst of the war for Independence, Bolívar proposed to Congress.
from Angostura that New Granada, Venezuela, and Ecuador should unite into one
great Republic called Colombia. However, Bolívar's idea did not succeed
to prosper.
While Bolívar was trying to consolidate the union of Venezuela, Ecuador, and New
Granada, Páez had already convened a congress to discuss the interests of
country at the beginning of 1830. On May 6 of that year, the Constituent Congress of
Venezuela met in Valencia, mostly formed by the most prominent figures
notables of the regions, landowners, military personnel, and merchants.
