CHAPTER I

THE NATURE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

INTRODUCTION

Since the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit has manifested in a different way,
especially since the beginning of the 20th century, when the modern Pentecostal movement emerged.
We understand that this outpouring of the Spirit represents one of the important signs of the return.
from Jesus to this world. The prominence that the Holy Spirit occupies in His work these days makes
it is imperative that believers are well-informed about the Third Person of the Trinity. That one
those who delve biblically into this subject will enjoy rich experiences, for it is through the
Spirit that Jesus reveals to the world. And by the spirit that Christ works with power in His Church.
We need Your fullness. The times we are going through are stormy and Satan knowing
that little temple that remains to you, operates vigorously against God and against His cause. Only in
through the power of the Holy Spirit, we will be able to overcome these evil forces. As we study
this subject, about the nature and ministry of the Holy Spirit, let us not be satisfied only
with a superficial knowledge of the subject, but let us ask the Lord for the fullness of this blessing and
of the power that the Holy Spirit came into the world to supply.

1. THE PERSONALITY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Many people think that the Holy Spirit is merely an untouchable force, or just a mysterious
influence that no one defines. This opinion is far from the truth, as the Holy Spirit is a
person, yes, the Third Person of the Trinity — John 14:1,9,17; Matthew 3:13-17.
A bodily form is not necessary for there to be personality. However, we find
the following three attributes in a personality:
1. Intellect — ability to think.
2. Sensitivity — ability to feel.
3.Will — the ability to choose.
We found these three factors in Espírito Santo:
1. Intellect - Romans 8:27; 1 Corinthians 2:10,11,13; 12:8
2. Sensitivity - Is. 63:10, Rom. 15:30; Eph. 4:30
3. Volition - At 16:6-11; I Co 12:11
a) Promises of the Holy Spirit
Jesus taught the disciples about the Holy Spirit at the end of his ministry, using the
personal pronouns.
Always using the masculine pronoun, not neutral — John 14:16-17; 15:26; 16:7-8, 13-14.
Actions of the Holy Spirit
We found further evidence of the personality of the Holy Spirit in His actions. We note that:
He teaches - John 2:27; 14:26; Nehemiah 9:20
He prays - Rom 8:26
He commands — At 16-6-7
He testifies — John 15:26
He speaks—At 13:2; 21:11
He guides - At 16:6-7; Rom 8:14
He makes communion - II Co 13:14 4
He performs miracles — At 10:38
He reveals - Lk 2:26
He does his pleasure - At 15:28; I Co 12:11
c) Actions against the Holy Spirit
The spirit can be treated as a Person. According to Peter, Ananias lied to Him — Acts 5:3.
It is possible to grieve the Holy Spirit — Eph 4:30;
they can be grieved — Is 63:10;
One can resist the Holy Spirit — Acts 7:51;
One can blaspheme the Holy Spirit — Mt 12:31-32;
do not quench the Spirit — I Thessalonians 5:19
It would not be possible to do these things against the spirit if He were just an influence.
Your Name
One of the reasons why personality is attributed to the Holy Spirit is the fact that the Bible attributes to him
grant certain names. One of His great titles is the COMFORTER — John 14:16,26; 16:7-13.
Comforter means 'someone called to be by one’s side', indicating the comforting ministry of
Holy Spirit The Greek word 'Paraclete' means: para = beside, and kaleo = to call or to ask.
The Holy Spirit today is our Paraclete or Comforter.
2. THE DIVINITY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
The Scriptures not only reveal the Holy Spirit as a Person, but also attest to His
divinity, when it asserts that He is God.
The incident of the attempted deceit committed by Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5 serves to illustrate the
divinity of the Holy Spirit.
Peter accused Ananias of having lied to the Holy Spirit (v. 3). In the following verse, Peter said:
you lied to God.
a) Attributes of God in the Holy Spirit
Another proof of the divinity of the spirit is found in the divine qualities attributed to Him.
Eternity—Hebrews 9:14
Omnipresence (is everywhere) — Ps.139:7-10
Omnipotence (all power) – Luke 1:35; Romans 15:18-19
Omniscience (all knowledge) — I Co 2:10; Jo 14:26, 16:13
Love—Romans 15:30
Truth—John 16:13
Sovereignty—I Co 2:11
In His own name 'Holy Spirit', we see holiness. Only God possesses these qualities.
b) Divine activities in the Holy Spirit
Let us also note the creative power of the Holy Spirit. In the creation of the world, the Spirit brought life —
Genesis 1:2
We observe in John 16:8-11 the triple work of the Holy Spirit in the sinner:
1. Convince of sin — v. 8
2. Convincing of justice - v. 10
3. Convince of judgment - v. 11
We also notice the work of the Holy Spirit in the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the same power
will operate in us in the resurrection of the dead —II Cor 4:13-14.
c) Equality with God the Father and the Son
1. Apostolic commission — Mt 28:19
2. Apostolic blessing — II Cor 13:13
3. Administration of the Church — Eph. 4:4-6
3- THE NAMES OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
The names and titles of the Holy Spirit are very significant, as they reveal His nature and work.
a) The names of the Holy Spirit in relation to the Father. This means that She has an intimate relationship with
Father, regarding our spiritual well-being and safety.
1. The Spirit of God - Gen 1:2; Mt 3:16
2. The Spirit of our God — 1 Corinthians 6:11
The Spirit of the Lord God — Isaiah 61:1
The Spirit of Your Father — Mt 10:20
5. The Spirit of the living God —II Cor 3:3
6. The Spirit of the Lord — Luke 4:18
b) The names of the Holy Spirit in relation to the Son These names given to the Third Person of
Trinity does not mean that there are two distinct spirits, as some think, but rather that the
The Spirit is given in the name of Christ, for it is sent by Christ.
Your special work is to glorify the Son of God.
1. The spirit of Christ — Rom 8:9; I Pet 1:22
The spirit of Jesus Christ — Phil 1:19
3. The Spirit of Jesus—Acts 16:7
c) The names of the Holy Spirit that indicate divine attributes
1. The eternal spirit—Heb 9:14
The spirit of life — Rom 8:2
3. The Spirit of holiness — Rom 8:2
4. The spirit of wisdom — Ex 28:3; Is 11:2
5. The spirit of truth — John 14:7
The Spirit of grace — Hb 10:29
d) The names of the Holy Spirit that indicate His work
1. The Spirit of worship — Romans 8:15
2. The spirit of faith - II Co 4:13
3. The Spirit of Prayer — Romans 8:26-27
4. THE SYMBOLS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
The symbols of the Holy Spirit are words used in the Scriptures as illustration. You
you will realize that they represent the action of the spirit through the various ministries it exercises in
favor of the people of God.
a) FIRE – LC 3:16
1. The Fire burns — Hb 12:29; Is 4:4. The manifestation of God's consuming holiness.
The fire consumes — it consumes what is fuel: wood, straw, hay — 1 Corinthians 3:13-15
3. Fire cleans - Fire can remove the slag from different materials. And it is the symbol of power.
purifier — Is 6:6-7; Nm. 3:2-3. 4.The fire softens —The fire of the spirit melts the hearts
hardened — At 2:37.
5. The fire hardens — The Holy Spirit that makes the believer whiter also makes him more
resilient, stronger.
6. The fire illuminates - Israel was guided at night by a glow of fire - Ex 13:2 1. The spirit in us
guide—Gal. 5:18.
b)WIND-At. 2: 2
Jesus spoke of the wind as a symbol of the Holy Spirit. The wind is invisible, but it is real. We cannot
to touch it, nor to understand it, but we can feel it — John 3:8.
The same word "pneuma" that is used in reference to the Holy Spirit, is also translated as
"breath", "air" or "spirit". God breathed into Adam the breath of life and he became a living soul.
The action of the wind symbolizes the benefits provided to us by the Holy Spirit. Among these,
the following stand out:
I. Transmission — All sound is transmitted through the waves of air. Through the Holy Spirit our
prayers are transmitted to God — Rom 8:26. through the Holy Spirit, the message of
God is transmitted to sinners Luke 4:18.
2.Power — Like a strong and impetuous wind, the Holy Spirit manifested in the upper room, where the
primitive believers were gathered on the day of Pentecost Acts 2:2; 37:41
3. Refreshment — The wind moves and cools, alleviating the heat of the sun Ps. 23:3.7
C) WATER. RIVER. RAIN - Jo. 7:37-39
1. Origin:
Christ, the source — John 7:37-39
b) Christ the split rock — Ex 17:6; I Co 10:4
c) The river comes from the altar — Ez 47:1-2
d) The rain comes from the sky - Is.55.10
2. Proportion:
a) Water is abundant, it is never lacking.
c) water from a well - is limited - John 4:6:13
d) water gushing - unlimited - John 4:14
3.Utility:
a) Water refreshes and quenches thirst — 51 42:2; 23:2
b) Water causes trees and grass to sprout — John 14:9; Isaiah 44:4
c) The clean water— Hb. 10:22; Tt. 3:5
d) The water nourishes — Is 44:3
4. Value:
a) Water is free—Is55:1
Water is essential to life.
d.OIL – OLIVE OIL – Zechariah 4:2-6
The oil is considered a symbol of the Holy Spirit because it was used in anointing ceremonies and
the consecration of prophets, priests, and kings in the O.T. (Ex 30:30; Lev. 8:12; I Sam 10:1, 16:13).
1.Symbolic application of oil (olive oil)
a) Olive oil on the ear, on the hand, and on the foot — Lv. 14:17. Qualification to hear the voice of God, to
to work, to walk in the way of the Lord.
b)Azeite no rosto — Sl 104:15; Hb. 1:9 — para brilhar de alegria. c)Azeite nas feridas — Lc. 10:34 —
for restoration by the Holy Spirit.
The anointing with oil represents the purpose of the Anointing of the Spirit
a) Consecration of the priest to minister the sacred things — Lv 8:10-12; Rm 15:16.
b) To serve efficiently — Revelation 3:18; Hebrews 1:9; 2 Corinthians 4:18.
c) To see perfectly — Revelation 3:18
d) To communicate spiritual knowledge — I John 2:20; I Corinthians 2:9-10.
e) To confirm in Christ—2 Corinthians 1:21; Hebrews 3:14.
Oil was used for feeding, lighting, lubricating, healing ailments, softening the skin, etc.
e.SEAL—Eph 1:13; II Tim 2:19
Property
Especially in past times, the impression of a seal indicated the owner's resolution.
the seal as a sign that something belonged to him. Believers are God’s property, and the
the dwelling of the Holy Spirit in them is the proof of this divine possession — Rom 8:9. 2. Legitimacy and
Authority
The documents were recognized and valid by the seals of the Union, the State, etc. When
Jesus was buried, the chief priests intended to secure His tomb,
sealing it and keeping it under guard: Mt 27:66 Violating that seal would imply confronting the government.
Roman. Thus, whoever attacks a child of God, sealed with the Holy Spirit, attacks the authority.
of the Celestial Government that has authenticated us as true Children of God. 3. Security or
preservation — Ephesians 1:14
Some products, such as canned fruits and vegetables, are sealed as a means to prevent the
air penetration, in order to preserve it from deterioration during the entire time the seal was
kept intact. Likewise, our lives are sealed by the Holy Spirit and preserved
of the influence of this contaminated world.
4. The seal is the Holy Spirit
a) Jesus lived by the Holy Spirit — Lk 14:18
b) Jesus offered himself and died for the Holy Spirit — Heb 9:14
c) Jesus was resurrected by the Holy Spirit — Rom 8:11
d) Jesus lives in us through the Holy Spirit - Col 1:27
e) Jesus produces life in us through the Holy Spirit — 1 John 4:17; Galatians 6:8
f. The DOVE – Mt.3:16-17
The Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples in the upper room in the form of fire; there was what
to burn. About Jesus came in bodily form as a dove, a symbol of purity and innocence of
Christ. 1. The dove came out of the ark, after the judgment of the burial of the earth in the waters and its immersion.
— Gn. 8:8-12. The Holy Spirit came down from heaven upon the disciples after the judgment that fell upon Jesus.
because of our sins — At 2:1-4; Rm 6:3-5.
2. The dove was sent three times and, on the third time, it stayed. The spirit was sent three times: a) about
the prophets; b) about Jesus and c) at Pentecost - about the Church and came to remain with it
(Mt 3:16; Jo 14:16-17; At 2:1-4; I Pe 1:10-11)
The nature of the Dove: The dove is a clean bird. It was used for sacrifices — Le 2:24. This
symbol speaks of kindness, tenderness, amiability, innocence, goodness, gentleness, peace, purity and
patience. There is no doubt that these virtues are characteristic of the Holy Spirit and show the way
how He acts in the believer to produce these qualities.
CHAPTER II
THE WORK AND THE GENERAL MINISTRY OF THE SPIRIT
1. IN THE OLD TESTAMENT
a) References to the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament
Let us now consider the work and presence of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament. According to T. L. Holdcroft in
your book "The Holy Spirit", He is mentioned eighty-eight times in the Old Testament. This means the third part
The times He is mentioned in the N.T. Twenty-three, out of the 39 books of the Old Testament make
reference to the Holy Spirit, and the book of Isaiah mentions the Holy Spirit fourteen times more than
the others.
b) The Creative Spirit in the Old Testament
Before man was created, and even before there was a world, the Holy Spirit existed. In
Gn 1:2 the earth is described as a formless and empty mass, and enveloped in darkness. A river of
hope penetrated the darkness: 'The Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters.' All the
three members of the Trinity participated in the creation. The Father exercised will and planned the work of
creation; the Son fulfilled this plan. The Holy Spirit also fulfilled His part, which is
especially the one of transmitting life.
The Holy Spirit in His work:
Gave life in the creation and sustenance of the universe— Gen. 1:2; Ps 104:30.
The Holy Spirit is the provider and sustainer of nature. The book of Job speaks a lot about this.
work. In Job 26:13 we read: "By His Spirit He adorned the heavens." The word "adorn" means to decorate or
adorn. With what are the heavens adorned? The night shines with the brightness of celestial bodies.
Astronomers analyze the changes in color in stars. Who does not appreciate the beauty of the sun?
sunset? The Christian, especially, feels great pleasure with these wonders because he knows the
Artist who painted such beautiful scenes. The psalmist declared in Psalm 33:6: 'By the word of the Lord'

Holy Spirit helping in the creation of these wonders found in the universe — S1 29:1, 19.
He gave life in the creation and sustenance of man — Gen 2:7; Job 33:4; Ps 33:6.
3. Communicates life and produces the new birth — John 3:5.
5. He resurrected Christ from the dead — Rom 1:4; 8:11.
c) The Holy Spirit Before the Flood
Genesis 6:1-7 describes the corruption of the antediluvian men, the days when their thoughts and
actions were continuously bad. As a consequence, God became saddened and decided to destroy the
human race, with the exception of Noah's family, through which the world would propagate. In the midst of
so intense judgment, God remembered mercy, giving Noah a means of escape through the
Ark that saved his life II Peter 2:5.
For 120 years, while building the ark, the Spirit of God contended and persisted with the
incredulous. The ministry of the Spirit is to work with the sinner, warning him of the danger that threatens.
it will happen if he refuses the Word of God. Genesis 6:3 says: My Spirit will not contend with
always. "Although God's patience is great, it is limited in a certain sense. The wicked do not
One must assume that in any case and at any time God will use mercy. The
antideluvians abused this mercy and were destroyed. We can notice two things here: the
the resistance of the people to the Holy Spirit and the persistence of the Spirit wrestling with the sinner.
The dynamic Spirit producing leaders in the Old Testament
Many men in the Old Testament received special power from the Holy Spirit, granting them ability.
especially in the exercise of their ministries. They were men of action, organizers, executives, etc.
1. WORKERS FOR GOD:
José - the nation of Egypt faced an unprecedented time of crisis in its history. God
enabled a young Hebrew for the revelation of mysteries, when he interpreted the dreams of the king,
warning Pharaoh that seven years of plenty would be followed by seven years of famine. Joseph suggested to the
king who chose an administrator, entrusting him to store the grains during the years of
abundance. The king said, 'Could we find anyone like this man in whom is the Spirit of God?' — Genesis 41:38
40 Then the king chose Joseph, believing that if he could receive divine interpretation of dreams,
He could then receive administrative wisdom for the national emergency. José received the position and
By the Spirit of the Lord, he managed the economic life of Egypt, saving the lives of many.
Bezaleel — when Moses needed a man who would be both an architect,
designer, superintendent, master builder, carpenter, and craftsman, God equipped Bezalel to
to build the tabernacle in the desert (Ex 31:1-6); and to teach other people - Ex
35:34). The Holy Spirit not only worked in the "spiritual work," but also in the "material work," and
For them, we need the same operation of the Spirit that helped Bezalel.
Moses - Isaiah 63:11 says that Moses was filled with the Holy Spirit. And the Spirit that dwelled in
Moses was transmitted to the seventy elders, thus demonstrating that Moses was a man full
of the Holy Spirit — Nm. 11:16-25. He received the ability, authority, and wisdom to lead the
people of Israel.
Joshua – in Num. 27:18 and Deut. 34:9, it says that he was a man in whom the Holy Spirit resided.
received divine authority from the Holy Spirit to command and lead the Israelites to conquer the land
promised — Js. 6-10.
2.THE JUDGES:
The Bible says that certain judges experienced the descent of the Holy Spirit in their lives,
granting them administrative skill to lead the people of Israel and achieve great victories
about your enemies.
Samson — the Scriptures say that the spirit of the Lord was the secret of Samson's strength — Judges
13:25. We should not think that Samson was a giant and of extraordinary physical proportions,
capable of making him a hero. When the spirit of the Lord came upon him, then he could kill
a lion with hands — Judges 14:6,19; 15:14. It was when the Spirit of the Lord came upon him that
he received strength to kill a thousand men with a donkey's jawbone — Judges 15:15.
Othniel was the first judge. He gained wisdom to judge Israel. Judges 3:9-10. 'The Spirit of the Lord came upon him'
the spirit of the Lord...
Gideon was the sixth judge. Despite his numerous oppressors, he defeated the Midianites with his
three hundred men by the power of the Holy Spirit. “Then the Spirit of the Lord clothed Gideon…” — Judges
6:34.
Jephthah - was the ninth judge. He defeated the Ammonites and freed the Israelites, as it is written.
in Jz 11:29— "Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah..." We can perceive that the great
victories achieved by these men of God in the Old Testament were the result of the power of the Holy Spirit
operating on them.
3.THE FIRST KINGS OF ISRAEL:
The Holy Spirit actively worked during the first period of the kings of Israel. The power of the spirit
The Lord transformed Saul into another man — 1 Sm 10:6. The Spirit anointed this king to lead His
people against the enemy — 1 Sm 11:6,11. The authority of Saul to reign and the victories by him
achievements were given by the power of the Spirit working in him. Saul's defeat was a result of
your stubborn disobedience to God's orders — I Sm 13:8-18; 15:18-19,22. When Samuel
anointed David, the spirit came and remained upon the future king of Israel — 1 Sam 16:13. It was this anointing
who gave victory to David over the Philistine Goliath and to reign so well over the nation, as well as to him
inspire to write the wonderful Psalms. This man who was 'according to the heart of God'
he understood the tragedy that it would be for him if God took away His spirit - 51 51:11 David
Do not take Your Spirit away from me.
4. THE PROPHETS:
The work of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament reached its peak through the ministry of the prophets. Through
He worked through these men of God in three ways: a) They performed wonders by his power. By
For example, Elisha recognized the Spirit as the main power in Elijah's life, asking for it as a
final blessing, that he be given the double portion of the anointing that was upon Elijah. These two
prophets served God in a time of national spiritual crisis, and the victories they achieved
in this time and with the evil kings, they manifested even more the power of the Holy Spirit working in
their lives.
b) The prophets spoke and preached God's message under the anointing of the Spirit for their generation and
your time.
The word written by them was produced by the divine inspiration of the spirit and preserved for the
posterity. Peter said that "these men spoke inspired by the Holy Spirit" — I Peter 1:10-12.
The regenerating spirit in the Old Testament
1.Operational but without emphasis — Is 63:10-11; 51 51:11; 142:10; Ne 9:20. In his book 'Knowing
In the doctrines of the Bible, Myer Pearlman says: 'The name Holy Spirit occurs only three times in the A.
T.., but eighty-six times in the New, suggesting that in the Old Testament the emphasis is on operations
dynamics of the Spirit, while in the N T. the emphasis is on His sanctifying power.
2. Your general outpouring as a source of holiness, a future blessing. When the Israelites
they experienced the descent of the Holy Spirit in a partial or particular form, several of their prophets
They prophesied that the moment would come when the descent of the Holy Spirit would be universal or general.
— Joel 2:28-19. This statement predicts the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon all flesh, making
"all the flesh" participates in an event that, in the history of the Israeli people, occurred only
individually, on sporadic occasions. The outpouring of the Holy Spirit would be such
magnitude that would come accompanied by the prophecy.
3. In connection with the coming of the Messiah, it was necessary for the coming of Jesus Christ into the world, to
to effect salvation and then grant the universal outpouring of the Holy Spirit - Mt 3:11. Myer
Pearlman said: 'The great blessing of the new era would be the outpouring of the Spirit and it was the most
high privilege of the Messiah, that of granting the spirit. Then, the promised outpouring of
Holy Spirit would have as its climax the person of the Messiah King. We can note that in the Old Testament,
The Holy Spirit is revealed in three ways:
1. As a creative Spirit, whose power created the universe and all beings;
2. The dynamic spirit or giver of power;
3. As a regenerating Spirit, through which human nature is transformed.
2. THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE NEW TESTAMENT
We will observe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the New Testament is much broader than in the Old Testament, when
we consider Your manifestation in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ; as well as in the church
established by Him and also in the millennium with His wonderful activity and presence. the Spirit

before the birth of Jesus Christ. During this period, no message from God was
prophesied to His people. Then suddenly, an era of intense spiritual activity begins.
out of the ordinary. Only in the Book of Luke, in the first two chapters, do we find eight
references to the Holy Spirit, that is, people speaking and prophesying under the power of the Spirit -
Luke 1:15, 35, 41, 46-55, 67-69; 2:25-27, 30-35, 36-38.
The Holy Spirit and the Life of Christ
1 The virgin birth — Luke 1:26-41, Matthew 1:20
An angel appeared in Nazareth, to a virgin named Mary, announcing to her that, by the power of
Holy Spirit, she would conceive and give birth to a son, who would be the Savior of the world — Is 7:14; Mt
1:22-23. The angel appeared to Joseph, Mary’s fiancé, assuring him that her pregnancy was the result
from the powerful action of the Holy Spirit. The angel told Joseph and Mary that this child would be born without
sin. The Bible says in Luke 1:35 that "the holy one" who was to be born from her would be called the "Son of God." And
in Mt 1:21 his name would be Jesus and his work would be 'to save his people from their sins.' A
Christ's passage through the world represents victory over sin, and the result of His coming was
the restoration of the human race.
The Presentation at the Temple - Luke 2:22-39
After the birth of Jesus, during His presentation in the Temple, the Spirit manifested itself.
again in a special way about Simeon and Anna — 2:30-38. The Spirit revealed to Simeon the
the true identity of the boy, announcing that he was Christ, the promised Messiah — Luke 2:25-27.
Simeon, a man upon whom the Spirit was, was moved by the same Spirit at that moment.
certain to go to the Temple, and he spoke about Jesus, whom he took in his arms.
3. The baptism of Jesus—Mt 3:11-17
After a period of activity, apparently lesser in the life of Jesus, the Holy Spirit became
to manifest itself in a special way. While John was baptizing in the Jordan River, Jesus came to be with him.
When Jesus was baptized, the Holy Spirit descended upon him, marking the beginning of His ministry.
When Jesus was baptized, John the Baptist saw a sign that God had shown him: 'Upon whom you see the
Spirit and upon him resting, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit" — John 1:33. This sign was
necessary for João to recognize who Christ was, the Messiah, and thus be able to present him
specifically to the Jewish people — Luke 3:21-22. Thus, as the heavens opened and the Holy Spirit
descending in the form of a dove, John realized that he was contemplating Christ himself.
4. The public ministry of Jesus
The Holy Spirit worked in the life of the Son of God in a special way. This activity will be
but better understood, when we understand how Jesus stripped Himself of His glory. This experience
It is related in Philippians 2:7, where it says that Christ was co-equal with God and was God Himself.
part of divinity. Even enjoying this elevated position, he voluntarily renounced it,
becoming a man to suffer death. He left the glory that he had with the Father, before the
world existed — John 17:5. When coming into the world in human form, voluntarily, he assumed the
form of a servant over Si. Through the ministry of the Spirit, in which he trusted, Jesus became
dependent on God; limiting itself to operate through the Holy Spirit and His power.
Initially, the Spirit led Jesus into the desert to be tempted by the devil (Mt 4:1-10). When
describing this episode, Marcos emphasizes the action of the Spirit in this way: 'He compelled Him'. Let us remember
that Spirit did not lead Jesus into the desert to leave him at the mercy of Satan's attacks. In fact,
Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:4), overcame every temptation by using the sword of
Spirit, the Word of God (Heb 4:12).
Only after the temptation did Jesus begin His proper ministry —Mt 4:17, 23-25. The
Christians, after receiving the baptism in the Holy Spirit, are approved to have their
deeper faith and then perform their ministry better. After this, Jesus began a
ministry of three and a half years, filled with the power of God, facing and overcoming the enemies of
humanity. The power that was in Him made Him dominate over: -The nature, which cannot
to continue in your fury upon hearing the voice of Jesus ordering, "Be still" (Mark 4:39; Matthew 8:23-27), or
when the sea offered stability to Jesus' feet as he walked on it (Mt 14:22:23). -The
circumstances that were transformed even when they seemed impossible, as they happen
when he fed thousands of people with just a few loaves of bread and fish (Mt 14:17-21).
The diseases. Wherever He went, the blind saw, the lame walked, the lepers were
clean, the deaf heard and all kinds of sick people were brought for him to heal. This ministry
had no precedent in the history of humanity (Mt 11:5; 8:1-4, 14-17).
The demons, causing them to flee before His presence, thus freeing them from this.
humanity of the affliction they caused (Lk 11:20; Mt 12:28; Mk 5:7; Acts 10:38). -Death, which
you lost your power before the mighty word that Jesus spoke to you when freeing some people from
her claws, bringing them back to life; as we can observe in the following examples:
"Young man, I say to you: Arise" (Luke 7:14-17).
To Lazarus, he said in a loud voice, 'Come out' (John 11:43). Those who heard him said:
"Never has any man spoken like this man." The preaching of Jesus was different from the others.
men (John 7:43). It was not only the essence of His message, but also the way of
to express it, which caused admiration. Her speech demonstrated strength and authority, which transformed the
life of your listeners.
Christ exercised His ministry not only as God, but as a perfect man, anointed by
Holy Spirit. This wonderful ministry that operated in Christ was the result of the power of
Spirit that was in Him. In the same way, Christians must depend on God, so that thus, the
The spirit that operated in Christ has a place, performing supernatural works in his ministry; for
Even today we can receive the same power that was in Christ.
5. The crucifixion
The same Spirit that propelled Jesus into the desert, supporting Him there and working in His ministry,
He also granted Him strength to fulfill this ministry on the cross where, "by the eternal Spirit
He offered Himself unblemished to God.” (Heb 9:14). He went to the cross with the anointing still upon Him.
The Spirit kept before Him the inflexible demands of God and filled Him with love and zeal to
with God, continuing despite the impediments of pain and difficulties, to carry out the work of
redemption of the world (Heb 12:2). This same Spirit provided Christ's triumph over death
to "bring us to God" (1 Pet 3:18).
6. The resurrection
The Holy Spirit was the life-giving agent in the resurrection of Christ and will also be in ours.
1:4;8:I1,23.
Ascension
The granting of the Holy Spirit in the life of Christ occurred in three phases:
In your conception, when the Spirit of God acted at that moment, proceeding with power
vivifying and purifying in the Spirit of Jesus, He was initiated into His career as Son of
man and by whom he lived until the end.
b) Over the years, a new relationship began with the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of God
became the Spirit of Christ in the sense that it rested upon Him to carry out His ministry
messianic.
c) After His ascension, the Spirit of God became the Spirit of Christ in the sense of being Him
granted to others (John 1:33). After the ascension, which happened centuries ago, the Spirit continues
fulfilling the ministry of Jesus Christ on earth. The Christian certainly recognizes Christ as the only
object of your faith, but also acknowledges that the Holy Spirit is the only power that ratifies and
implement this faith.
B.A THE CHURCH
1. THE OUTPOURING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Sent by Christ
The Spirit came to remain upon Christ, not just for His own needs, but
also so that he would pour out upon all Christians: The one upon whom you see descending and
to baptize the Spirit, this is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit" (John 1:33).
The outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost confirmed the arrival of Christ at the right hand of
Father, a sign that the redemptive work had been completed. So, after His ascension, the Lord
exercised the great messianic prerogative that was granted to Him - to send the Spirit to others.
Therefore, He grants the blessing that He Himself received and makes His Church and His followers co-
participants with Him Himself — "So that, being exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from
For the promise of the Holy Spirit, he poured out what you now see and hear.” (Acts 2:33).
b) The Fulfillment of the Promise
This outpouring that occurred on Pentecost (Acts 2) is the fulfillment of the promise of
Christ in giving the Comforter (Acts 1:8). The Lord had said that within a few days they would go.
receive this experience, the baptism in the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:5).
c) The Birth of the Church
The coming of the Holy Spirit was the promise that the followers were expecting in the upper room. This event
powerful, accompanied by visible evidence — wind, tongues of fire, dominated these
disciples and they spoke in tongues unknown to them, by means of the supernatural power (Acts 2:1-
The one hundred and twenty in the upper room were the firstborn of the thousands and thousands of the Church, which since
so they have been established over the last nineteen centuries. The Pentecostal outpouring
it was the beginning of a new dispensation.
God sent His Son, and when the mission of the Son was fulfilled, He sent the Spirit of His Son.
to continue the work under new conditions. The period between the ascension of Christ and His second
coming, it is this dispensation of the Spirit. The Spirit came to the world at a designated time to
a specific mission and will depart when His mission has been fulfilled. He didn't just come to the
world with a determined purpose, but also for a determined time. The specific name
of the Spirit during this dispensation will be 'The Spirit of Christ'. The ministry will continue until
Jesus will come, after which another dispensational ministry will take place.
2. PROVISION OF DIVINE POWER FOR THE CHURCH
In his book "The Holly Spirit", L. T. Holdcroft says: '... many of the achievements and characteristics of
The Church, in the Book of Acts, is attributed to the Holy Spirit. He has been called "the Executor of
Great Commission and the Administrator of the missionary venture." It was due to His skill that the
Conversions occurred, that the unit was preserved in the Church, that a dynamic neo-leadership
administrative was provided and the miracles were performed.” This explains the widespread dissemination so
fast of the Gospel at that time, initiating a movement that endures to this day.
This was the supernatural work in the followers of Christ.
Everything the early Church needed in the first centuries to spread the Gospel in
world, was provided by the power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit has played His
role as 'Producer of the History of the Church'.
3. THE PERMANENT DWELLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE CHURCH
On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit was sent to dwell in the Church as His temple, being
Your presence located in the collective Body and in the Christians individually. The Spirit thus took on
Your duty to manage the affairs of the kingdom of Christ. The Holy Spirit is the representative of
Christ. He is entrusted with all the administration of the Church until the return of Jesus. The work and the purpose.
The ultimate goal of the Comforter is the edification and perfection of the Body of Christ. Confidence in the guidance of
The Spirit was deeply rooted in the early church. There was no aspect in the life of the
Christians, in whom their Leader was not recognized or who did not feel the effects of His
direction. The Holy Spirit is the divine Director who guides the Church and the believer faithfully. His presence is necessary.
direction in the following aspects:
a) In the General Work of the Church.
Empowering the Church to witness, win souls for Christ, and care for the flock through
preaching (1 Peter 1:12; 1 Thessalonians 1:6; 1 Corinthians 2:4-5); prayer (John 16:23; Ephesians 6:18; Jude 20; Romans 8:26-27); singing (Ephesians
5:18-19) and the testimony (Acts 8:4-5, 35; 11:19-20).
b) In the Administration and Organization of the Church This is the prerogative and ministry of the Holy Spirit
through men chosen for positions and offices in it (Acts 20:28; 6:3; 15:28).
1. Administrative Leadership. The Holy Spirit provided administrative leadership and operated
miracles through direct action, through angels or visions. For example, the Holy Spirit sent Philip to
Gaza (Acts 8:26-29); gave direction to Ananias to pray for Saul (Acts 9:10-15) and guided the leaders of
Church in Antioch to choose missionaries (Acts 13:1-4).
2. The Calling and the Ordering of Workers. The Holy Spirit confirmed through the Church, the calling
of Barnabas and Saul and appointed them for the missionary work. The leaders of the Church were not concerned
with their own convictions, but with the choice of the Holy Spirit (Acts 13:2-4). Paul also
he was aware that all his ministry was inspired by the Holy Spirit—Romans 15:18,19.
3. The Solution of Problems and Disputes. The Holy Spirit gave the apostles divine wisdom and
direction to solve the first problem of the Church, thereby establishing the organization in
Church (Acts 6:1-6). He also gave wisdom to the leaders to resolve the differences among the Jews.
believers and Gentiles new converts, guiding in the rejection of the limitations of Jewish nationalism
excessive and breaking down the barriers of racial prejudice and discrimination (At 15:28), thus avoiding the
fragmentation of the Church and fulfilling the purposes of God.
c. In the Guidance of Missionary Work The great missionary movements of the early Church were
ordained and approved by the Holy Spirit — Acts 8:29; 10:19, 44; 13:2,4. He, as the divine Director of
missions, prevented and did not allow certain trips, changing Paul's plans and giving a new
direction to him and The missionary work.
4. THE ASCENT OF THE SPIRIT AND THE RAPTURE OF THE CHURCH
The specific work of the Holy Spirit in the present dispensation is to prepare a bride (the global church)
for Christ (Acts 15:14; 1 Cor 3:16; 1 John 4:2). When this is accomplished and the fullness has entered
the gentiles" (Rom 11:25), the rapture of the church will occur, and the Spirit will pass His administration
for the Son. After the Church is taken away, the dispensational mission of the Holy Spirit, like the
"Spirit of Christ" will be completed, however, He will remain in the world with a ministry.
different.
The Holy Spirit in the Future
In the current dispensation, the Holy Spirit has been the divine executing power in the Church. When the Church
He offers her her rightful place, she experiences resounding revivals; when the Church ignores Him and
negligence, leaving Him aside, suffers defeats in its mission regarding salvation of
souls and the spiritual growth of its members. With the rise of the current Church, a new beginning will start
a new period that will allow the operation of the Spirit in a different way. This period will have
at least three distinct and prominent points, as follows:
I. THE TRIBULATION
The present ministry of the Holy Spirit in remaining on earth and restraining the assaults of
Satan will be interrupted during the Tribulation - 'For the ministry of injustice is already at work...'
There is one that now restrains until he is removed from the midst" (II Thessalonians 2:7). When the Church is taken away,
The Spirit will interrupt His ministry, that is, the one of being permanently on earth, like Him.
do it now, in the time of the Church.
The converts of the Tribulation will not have the privilege of having the Holy Spirit dwelling in them, to
to make them new creatures in Christ Jesus, as happens with current Christians. Those who
those who repent and come to God during the Tribulation will enjoy a position similar to those of
believers of the O.T. 'Abram believed in God, and this was counted to him as righteousness' (Rom 4:3). As
Abraham, the saints of the Tribulation will know God's justification, but not the regeneration made.
by the Spirit, nor His internal presence.
Meanwhile, the Holy Spirit will certainly continue His ministry in the field of humanity,
during the period of Tribulation. Under the symbol of the 'seven spirits', which apparently
they denote fullness. The Spirit is symbolized during the period of Tribulation as being 'sent ones.'
to all the earth” (Revelation 5:6). Apparently, the Spirit will take part in the development of the judgment of
forces of the Antichrist. Like another ministry, the Spirit will anoint, empower, and sustain the Jews and
the remaining Gentiles, and in this way, will lay the foundation for the conversion of the Jewish nation and the
perseverance of the believers, to the point of martyrdom. It would be evident to say that those who seal their
testimony with your own blood will be vitally dependent on the Holy Spirit, in what it
refers to your achievements, spiritually. Even if the Spirit does not operate regeneration, it
will provide the spiritual impetus necessary to lead them to believe in God, so that this may be
told to them for justice. John listed the saints of the Tribulation in two classes: '... I saw
beneath the altar are the souls of those who were killed for the love of the Lord and for the love of
testimony that was given... And they were given to each one long white robes” (Rev 6:9-
11). After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could count, from all the
nations, and tribes, and peoples, and languages, that were before the throne and before the Lamb, wearing
white robes and palm branches in their hands” (Rev 7:9).
2. THE REVELATION OF CHRIST
In the revelation of Jesus Christ, the divine Son of David, long rejected by His people, will take on
His position as King of Kings. The Holy Spirit will appropriately anoint Him and empower Him to
His new ministry. "For a shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse, ... and the Spirit of the Lord will rest upon Him
Spirit of the Lord, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of knowledge and
the fear of the Lord" (Is 11:1-2). Thus it can be said that the skillful governance of the divine Christ will be exercised
nor by the power of the Holy Spirit.
The fact that Christ will reveal Himself and return as the great Conqueror to defeat the Antichrist and
his armies, is a consequence of the work of the Spirit. The Jews will return to Him and Him
they will receive as if they were their own, because of the outpouring of the Spirit upon them - 'For
I will pour water on the thirsty and rivers on the dry land; I will pour out my Spirit on the offspring.
posterity, and my blessing upon your descendants" (Isaiah 44:3). "And I will put my spirit upon you
Spirit and you will live, and I will place you in your land...” (Ez 37:14). “And upon the house of David, and upon the
inhabitants of Jerusalem; I will pour out the Spirit of grace and supplications; and they will look upon me whom
they have pierced, and they will mourn... "(Zec 12:10).
The outpouring of the Spirit at the end of the Tribulation points to the revelation of Christ, because the
the Spirit's exposition works in the hearts of Jews who repent and accept their Messiah,
that they had previously rejected.
3. THE MILLENNIUM
The Millennium, that is, the thousand-year kingdom in which Christ will reign over the earth, will be the time when the
The Spirit will exercise the fullness of His ministry. There will be a pouring out like never before.
world (Is 32:15). The consequences of this outpouring are described as justice, peace,
rest and security" (Is 32:16-17), predominantly The Holy Spirit will be felt in a
a common form for all in the millennium, in contrast with the infrequency of this in other times, and this
it will be manifested in worship and praise to the Lord, in prompt obedience to Him, as well as the power
and inner transformation. In the millennium, when there will be a new government and a kingdom of justice, the
the ministry of the Spirit of God will bring complete renewal (Is. 44:3).
CHAPTER III
THE HOLY SPIRIT IN HUMAN EXPERIENCE
a.CONVENCE OF SIN
By himself, man would never take the first step toward God. Therefore operation
the number one thing from the Holy Spirit is to make the sinner feel the need for the Savior
16:8-11). The Father draws men to Himself through the ministry of the Holy Spirit. Jesus said:
"No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them" (John 6:44).
The methodology of Espírito Santo is to make the person:
Feel Your Sin
The Holy Spirit makes the sinner feel their sin by moving their heart in such a way that
understand that he is a sinner; especially because he does not believe that Jesus is the sublime expression
of the love of God. Men often recognize that:
they were born in sin;
c) your way of living is vain, and that
they will be eternally condemned.
However, they are still not convinced. But when they understand the love of Christ and how much He
they suffered for them, and then, they fall at the feet of Christ, repenting of their sins. This happens
because the sin of unbelief that entailed and produced new sins disappears. Right
the scholar said: "where this sin remains. all other sins arise and when this
disappears, everyone else disappears." The resistance ends when they understand that the
Sin is to resist supreme love. The Holy Spirit does not act with vehement accusations against the
sinner as the prosecutor does against the defendant. The conviction of the Holy Spirit is not carried out.
with firmness, but rather with tenderness. The voice of the Spirit is gentle, appealing to the heart to accept
He who shed His blood on Calvary.
2. Be convinced of the Justice of Christ - John 16:8-10
This justice is proven by the resurrection of the Lord, testifying to the purity of Christ, that is,
He had no sin; He was not a sinner, but rather just (Rom 1:4). His death on Calvary cried out.
His victory over sin, freeing the sinner from his bondage. The Holy Spirit used Peter
to convince those who had crucified Him, that Jesus was not a sinner, but that they were
they had crucified the Lord of justice. (Acts 2:36-37).
The operator feels through the operation of the Holy Spirit that his inequities do not match with
the propitiatory sacrifice of Christ, thus, the justice of Christ reproves the acts of the sinner, but indicates-
they also have salvation, thus abolishing any excuse that tries to justify the sinner
2:38
3 Convince yourself of Judgment —John 16:8,11
The operator is convinced by the Holy Spirit that if he continues in the practice of sin, he will not
escape from the righteous judgment of God (Rm 2:3); that the prince of this world, Satan, is already judged (Jo
He has ruled the life of his servants like a tyrant, but the grace of God
consumed at Calvary the victory that Jesus obtained over the devil, thus freeing the sinner from his
slavery. The power that Satan had over men was destroyed by the truth of the cross and thus,
his ruin was decreed (Heb 2:14-15; Col 2:15; 1 John 3:8; Rom 16:20). Christ defeated the devil freeing
men, and it is up to them to accept their liberation. The Spirit convinces men that they can
to be free (Ezekiel 28:14; John 8:36; 1 John 3:8; Colossians 2:13; John 12:23,31-33); and that they must believe in the statement
of Jesus that they have passed from death to life (John 5:24).
D.REGENERA
After the sinner is convinced by the Holy Spirit of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment, he needs to
to be regenerated and made alive, for only then can one become a child of God. Because he was born into sin
and having a sinful nature, it is useless to try by yourself to improve this fallen nature
inheritance from the old Adam. The only alternative is to receive from Jesus Christ, the second Adam, a new
nature (1 Cor 15:45).
a. The nature of regeneration. The Holy Spirit provides the beginning of all spiritual life — '...
whoever is not born of water and the Spirit cannot enter the kingdom of God" (John 3:5). Your own
In this way, the Holy Spirit works in those who are spiritually dead, giving them life.
form, or converted is affiliated with the Holy Spirit - 'But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, that one ...
"It is not his" (Rom 8:9). One of the Jewish leaders named Nicodemus received from Jesus the
explanation of the meaning of what it is to 'be born again'. This birth does not happen
through the will of the flesh, but occurs by the Spirit and by water — whoever is not born of
"No one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again" (John 3:3).

b. The need for regeneration. Nicodemus was a good man, of high moral standing, religious and
very well educated; but still Jesus insisted that he needed to be born again. The nature
humanity is so depraved, because of its state of spiritual death, that it is necessary that the
man receives life solely through a radical change — The new birth. (Eph 2:1; Lk
18:18-29).
c. The execution and the process of regeneration. This process is a complete recreation of a mere
spark in flames of the divine spark; this does not mean developing a superior nature, but
create a new nature.
The expression "to be born of the flesh and of the spirit" simply means that man, as a consequence
from its filth, it needs to be born of water, that is, it needs to be purified. This water represents the
powerful and infallible Word of God (Eph 5:26; I Pet 1:23). This truth can also be found
in Ezekiel, when the Lord said: '... I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be purified...'
I will put my Spirit within you and cause you to walk in my statutes... (Ez 36:25-27; Tt 3:4-5; Ef
The expression 'born of the Spirit' seemed strange to Nicodemus. Jesus explained to him that the action
the Spirit over man is like the wind, whose origin and destination are unknown.
the way God breathed into Adam's nostrils giving him life, so the Spirit of God gives life to the
the spirit of man, who is found dead in his trespasses and sins, making him able to live for
God in holiness.
In the current process of regeneration, this operation is exclusively of the Holy Spirit, and it is a work
divine and not human
2. THE HOLY SPIRIT AND THE BELIEVER
A LIVES IN IT
The habitation of the Holy Spirit is so basic in the Christian experience that the believer is described as being
the temple of the Spirit - "Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who dwells
in you... "(1 Corinthians 6:19). "Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells
in you”? (I Co 3:16). The dwelling of the Spirit in the believer confirms the believer's sonship - “And, because you are
children, God sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts...” (Gal 4:6). Jesus assured us of
your disciples that your relationship with the Spirit would change after Calvary — “The
Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him, but you
you know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you” (John 14:17). He emphasized that this would be a
permanent relationship - "... so that he may be with you forever..." (John 14:16). The Spirit
Saint lives in the true Christian, for it is through the Spirit that Christ dwells in his heart by
faith. This union with God is the so-called inner dwelling, and it is actually produced by the presence
of the Trinity completes in him. Dwelling in our hearts, the main mission of the Holy Spirit is
glorify Christ - 'He will glorify me because he will receive what is mine and will declare it to you.'
The Holy Spirit does not speak of Himself, but of Christ whom He glorifies. Truly, He
He is always present everywhere, but the inner dwelling means that God is present from
A new way, maintaining a personal relationship with the individual. The dwelling of the Spirit begins
at the moment of conversion — "... and by this we know that He (Jesus) is in us, by the Spirit"
that has given us” (I John 3:24). The dwelling of the Holy Spirit precedes any and all
the relationship that the Christian has with Him. (Rom 8:9; II Tim 1:14; John 2:27; Col 1:27; Rev 3:20). When
the Spirit dwells in the believer, who receives special care because the Spirit takes on certain
attitudes towards him, such as:
1.Certifying Divine Affiliation
Paul declares that: 'The same Spirit testifies with our spirit that we are children of God' (Rom
8:16). This statement is in accordance with what John said: '... and the Spirit is the one who testifies. because
"The Spirit is the truth" (1 John 5:6). In this way, the Spirit provides a spiritual perception that
expand the natural sense. Many new converts have many uncertainties, or even doubts.
declared, in relation to the newly found faith. Sometimes the effects of sin are so
deep that a person stops enjoying the presence of God. One facet of the work of the Spirit
It is holy to make us understand that we are truly 'children of God' and 'co-heirs with Christ.'
This work in us gives us a confidence that makes it easier for us to enter with "boldness into the throne of grace."
In summary, we can conclude that: a. Through the new birth, we receive the nature of 'children'
of God;
b. Through adoption, the Spirit testifies with our spirit that we truly possess the rights
of 'children of God'. This is an essential and acceptable part of the ministry of the Holy Spirit, that is,
to assure the Christian of his stability and security in God.
Coming
Since the Holy Spirit is a divine person, He has been working to extend a fellowship.
personal and a sense of relationship with believers. The Greek word 'koinonia' can be
translated as "communion" — "Therefore, if there is any comfort in Christ, if any consolation from
love, if there is any fellowship (koinonia) in the Spirit...” (Philippians 2:1). “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the
the love of God and the communion (koinonia) of the Holy Spirit be with all of you" (II Cor 13:13). The
The Holy Spirit and the regenerated believer share many things in common. He offers friendship.
and communion with the people of God. He shares with the believer the same love that He has for the
Father and the Son, He guides each one, whom He dwells in, in a growing relationship with God
through Your divine Person. Jesus Christ, in addition to granting us the blessing of the Holy Spirit,
also grants us the 'communion' of His Holy Spirit. This blessing not only leads us to have
a privileged communion with Jesus as well as communion with other Christians of the Church.
3.Assisting in Worship and Prayer
Paul wrote: 'For we are the circumcision, we who worship God in the Spirit...'
(Philippians 3:3). The Christian of the New Testament has the privilege of participating in the ministry of the Holy Spirit, which grants him
concedes direction and efficient provision in praise. Jesus promised, regarding the Spirit: 'He
he will glorify me...” (John 16:14). The Holy Spirit operates by guiding the believer who praises the presence of
King. The specific instructions regarding the worship of believers are given by Paul.
... but be filled with the Spirit; speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs.
singing to the Lord in your heart... '(Eph 5:18-19).'
The ministry of the Spirit, in particular, assists the believer in prayer - 'Praying at all times, with'
all prayer and supplication in the Spirit” (Eph 6:18). The Holy Spirit is the one who helps us in our life of
prayer, as it shows us in Romans 8:26-27. He intercedes for us because we do not know how to pray
how we should, and when we do not know how to ask for what we should ask for, we need someone to help us
to guide, and that someone is the Holy Spirit.
We must find comfort in one aspect of the intercession of the Spirit. In Romans 8:27 it is written: '...It is He
that according to God intercedes for the saints.' Our trust in God must be very
great, when we know that we pray 'according to God'. The Spirit produces exactly this
trust. Many believers take Him lightly, and thus, fail to enjoy the advantages that He
dispensation. If everyone were filled with the Holy Spirit and humbly confident in His Person, not
there would be weak and frustrated believers.
4 Instructing and Remembering
Jesus said: '... the Holy Spirit... he will teach you many things and remind you of everything that
I have told you" (John 14:26). The instruction of the Spirit clearly involves, among other things.

truth..." (John 16:13). Since He leaves teachers in the church, He teaches through both; from
direct impression, that is, from the illumination of the Scriptures, and through human resources. One of
results of the ministry of the Spirit in instructing and reminding of the message of Jesus was the production of
New Testament through the apostles. The teaching of the Holy Spirit is not related as much as the
revelation of new and unknown truths, but rather, with the illumination of truths already known.

hearts to understand the Word of God. If the Spirit is the Author of this book,
consequently, it is his best interpreter. The same Spirit that inspired men to write the

3.Guiding
The Spirit works, guiding the believer in decision-making and problem-solving.
particularly those related to the service of the Lord. He fulfills God's promise —
I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go; I will guide you with my eye.
It offers freedom from distractions, including from the flesh itself (Rom 8:14; John 16:13). To be guided
by the Spirit, one must set aside self-sufficiency and natural wisdom, even if the direction
do Spirit should not be contrary to them (GI 5:25). Being sensitive to the guidance of the Spirit is a hallmark of
Christian maturity. The ministry of the Spirit in guiding has been described when it operates in the believer by
an 'intuition of our Christian judgment.' Flaterry highlighted that one who takes an attitude

Occasionally, the direction of the Spirit is negative and preventive (Acts 16:6-7) Edmund Tedeschi

He hides the Gospel, perhaps to protect His messengers, perhaps in the judgment of the region, perhaps
so that the message is faster for the more prepared peoples, or perhaps because He
is guiding another apostle (sent one) to that place. The Spirit guides by illuminating the
Scriptures, unveiling mysteries (John 14:26; 1 Corinthians 2:12). The Spirit guides in personal cases of a
individual form (Lc 2:27; 4:1; At 8:39), and also in times of persecution (Mt 10:19-20).
The direction of the Spirit should not be confused with human desires and opinions. Paul went to
Jerusalem and was arrested by the will of God, despite the advice of the disciples. Some
directions are not led by the Spirit, but are products of human reasoning and opinion. A
The glorious experiences of the Christian life are feeling the direct guidance of the Spirit.
6. Comforting
Jesus referred to an aspect of the ministry of the Holy Spirit when He called Him
"Comforter", which can also be translated as "Advocate". Among the ancient Romans, The
lawyers were people of a certain social status, known for their integrity of character,
wisdom and knowledge, which provided advice primarily out of love and affection,
and support to the defendant. They accompanied him before the courts, and when necessary, they spoke
in favor of the one who was now his friend. In the same way, the Holy Spirit helps the Christian as
"Lawyer", encouraging him, urging him, advising him, and teaching him exactly what
must speak and do. The Greek term 'paraclete' used means: 'someone called to be alongside'
"next to." In this way, the Holy Spirit is sent to be by our side, supporting us and
helping us not to fall when we are in temptation, ensuring victory over the world, the
meat and the devil, for His company.
Our attitude should be one of complete trust in His power, handing over our problems to Him.
seeking to heed His advice, for the Spirit will be with us as the same as

it is only necessary for the Christian to give Him the opportunity to operate.
B. SANCTIFICA
When the regeneration of man occurs, the Holy Spirit makes a radical change in the soul,
granting a new principle of life, this does not mean that the children of God become
perfect immediately. The acquired weakness of Adam remains, and there is still a need to overcome the world,
the flesh and the devil. The Spirit does not operate randomly, but in a vital and progressive way,
renewing the soul every day. Faith must be strengthened through many trials and love must be
matured to survive difficulties and temptations. The Holy Spirit represents for the believer,
the intimate life of Christ with all the richness of His divine-human holiness. His desire is that the
soul be emptied of self-justification and let the old nature be rejected - "... for already
"deceptions of the old man with his deeds" (Col 3:9).
The seductions of sin must be overcome and the tendencies and bad habits must be
corrected. The ministry of the Holy Spirit does not annul the responsibility of the believer, but gives him the
opportunity to grow morally and spiritually.
Many have considered the subject only from the negative side, that is, distancing oneself from evil (Is 6:5).
The positive side of dedicating oneself to good is of equal or greater importance. Only distancing oneself from
bad creates a vacuum, therefore, we must dedicate ourselves to God. Even participants of nature
Divine, the truth is that, at the same time, the old nature is present and wants to dominate life.

as soon as the life of the new creature in Christ blossoms (2 Corinthians 5:17). The Holy Spirit works at
our side granting us the power to be victorious. The Spirit of Life, in Christ Jesus
is more powerful than the law of sin and death (Rom 8:2). Although the flesh seeks to raise the
head and to overcome the work of God in us, the Spirit also works providing power to
we will be victorious over the flesh. The flesh produces works of the flesh, and the spirit the fruit of the Spirit,
be. the character of Christ. In this way, he exerts a creative power that is described in the Scriptures, in
figure of the fruit of the Spirit. The fruit of the Spirit is the harvest resulting from a life that is lived
permanently in submission to the Spirit. Thus, with this attitude, the Spirit produces the fruit, which
is composed of the following parts, which are adapted and explained in the book "The Holy Spirit" by L. T.
Holdcroft.
1. CHARITY — or love.
The word agape has a divine connotation, and indeed this word is used solely in
Christianity. Since God is love (1 John 4:7-8; John 3:16; 15:13), this fruit encompasses the maxim of
the essence and nature of God. This divine love is enough to influence all points of
view and conduct of the Christian (Eph 5:1-2). Love is the motivation that finds its main pleasure in
satisfaction of others (Mt. 22:37,39; J0 13:35; I Co 12:31; 13). When love, the fruit of the Spirit,
it works correctly, it enables the believer to master the demanding circumstances of life. Love
divinely implanted remains steadfast even in the face of punishment and discipline, and does not
extends not only to friends, but also to enemies (Mt 5:44; 18:21-22). This love motivates the
believer, as a Christian witness, to bring the God who loves all men, and bring everyone
men to the God of love. In Paul's discourse on love in 1 Corinthians 13, he lists a total of
fifteen attributes of love, seven positive and eight negative. In this passage, many other fruits of
Spirit (longanimity, kindness, faith, meekness) are described as expressions of love. This
therefore, it emphasizes that love is the foundation of other spiritual graces, and that it is essential in life
every human being. 2.JOY
The spiritual gift of joy is an inner rejoicing or sense of pleasure. The Scriptures provide plenty
emphasis on joy. The Greek word for joy is 'chara'. The joy of the Spirit can exist
simultaneously with the sadness, in the face of tragedies and adversities. It can even grow
when the believer suffers persecution, imprisonment, and the hostility of wicked men. When
this spiritual fruit operates in the believer and becomes a possible principle related to hope,
confidence and optimism. This is not a feeling, but an attitude or perspective; it is a way of seeing
and to understand. This spiritual gift of joy is enough to neutralize natural human reactions.
such as discouragement, depression, morbid sadness, and self-pity. The perspective of joy
it is a tonic note in the N.T. (Acts 13:52; 15:3; Romans 15:13; 1 John 1:4; Acts 20:24; Jude 24). The feat of the believer
In spiritual joy, it unites with your growth in the likeness of Christ (Luke 10:21; John 15:11; Psalm 40:8;
Hb 12:2). When the Holy Spirit dwells in a person, He provides joy (Its 1:6; Rom 14:17; 1 Pet 1:8;
1s 35:10)
3.PAZ - from Greek "eirēnē".
A spiritual gift of peace denotes a sense of calm, harmony, a complete lack of hostility or
a charitable serenity. This peace begins with an aspect of salvation, and the awareness of a
correct relationship with God (Rom 5:1; Eph 5:15; Rom 15:33; Phil 4:7). The manifestation of peace as
a fruit of the Spirit is rooted in the acts of the Spirit and not in the events of the believer's life. Peace
spirituality can exist amidst difficulties, conflicts, and hostile circumstances. God's way
firstly involves a change in the mind and heart of the believer (Isaiah 26:3; Romans 14:17, 8:6).
There is an intimate relationship between the appropriate peace as a fruit of the Spirit and knowing.
truly to Jesus Christ (Eph 2:14; John 14:27; 16:33; Rev 1:4; II John 3; I Peter 1:2). The fruit of peace
the interior should characterize the life of every victorious Christian.
4.LONGEVITY.
The Greek word for long-suffering is 'makrothumia', which means the opposite of a temper.
quickly explosive. The believer shows patience when he maintains self-control in the face of
of an insistent provocation. The believer promptly suppresses their own desires in favor of
wishes of others. The word "patience" is a suitable synonym for this fruit of the Spirit. In
truth, in the sense that it is used in the NT, does not have an exact equivalent in our
language. It does not absolutely mean having a always placid and phlegmatic attitude, like many
people think.
Patience is the ability of altruistic love to survive for a long time in a climate
adverse. And the ability to stand firm, without weakening, in the face of difficult people and circumstances
adverse. And a willingness to understand the strangest people and the most
problems that the Father allows in our lives. And more than that, patience enables man to
to stand firm when difficulties arise, not just standing tall, but moving forward.
The Scriptures repeatedly urge patience and long-suffering (Eph 4:2; I Thess 5:15; II Tim 4:2; Col
1:11). Downer said about long-suffering: 'It avoids disputes, heals injuries, promotes
forgiveness and goodwill. She gives a gentle answer that dispels anger.” The true longanimity
spiritual incorporates a force and a sense of positive victory. When this fruit is manifested, the believer
he remains steadfast in balance and serenity, despite the tension, misery, and trial. He maintains a
carefree perseverance in doing good; he accepts the actions of others with tolerance and
abstain completely from taking revenge (James 5:11). The manifestation of the fruit of long-suffering, not
it only shows how to bear suffering, but if it is necessary for the glory of God, endure it.
that suffering with joy. This fruit enables the believer to react in a Christian manner in the face of a
unfair treatment by others. When the Spirit communicates long-suffering as a fruit
spiritual, He communicates one of God's basic attributes (Ex 34:6; II Pe 3:9). Considering that the
the typical human response to provocation is a hostile reaction, this fruit ensures that the believer is
submissive and able to participate in divine patience. God shares His attributes because He
wants the believer to participate in His work.
5. BENIGNITY
The word benignity in Greek is 'chrestotes', and it is equivalent to kindness or benevolence, and
In this case, the spiritual fruit means kindness, generosity, or honesty. It also expresses the
idea of moral goodness and integrity that is expressed in being gracious and willing to serve (Rom 3:12;
2 Peter 2:3; Colossians 3:120. As a characteristic trait, kindness denotes a spirit and will that
are exercised to assume the highest consideration for others. The believer who manifests this
spiritual fruit is truly a gentleman or a lady. He is naturally good, honest, of
sweet temperament, helpful and fearful of feelings. He always tries to see others in the best light
the intentions. By manifesting kindness, the believer treats his friends in the same way as God.
This is the covenant (Ephesians 4:32).

The true gentle Christian, intentionally or not, will never harm others (S1 18:35; I Th 2:7; II Tm
The way for a Christian to become kind is the specific appropriation of this quality.
divine through submission to the ministry of the gentle Holy Spirit.
6.GOODNESS.
The Greek word for goodness is 'agathosune', and as a fruit of the Spirit, it includes the character of who one is.
virtuoso and kind. It is a special way of living for others without expecting
rewards. It consists of a practical benefit and a care for what is good. It is an effort
deliberate in putting the world right. Kindness is love in action. A primary synonym for
Kindness is "generosity". Those who show kindness are generous in themselves towards
to others, and is generously submissive in his will to God. He dedicates himself to serving his
friends in obedience to God's moral standards.
The most significant function of kindness is in the spiritual field. The Scriptures describe Barnabas.
as "a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith" (Acts 11:24). The kindness of Barnabas
he qualified him as a minister in the revival of Antioch (Acts 11:26), and to be chosen as
Paul's companion on the first missionary journey (Acts 13:1-3).
Jesus taught that goodness is of divine origin - "... there is no one good except one, that is God..."
The goodness is the invincible power of God defeating evil. The goodness of the Lord is the
the greatness of Your love, which dissipates our despair, and, from our death, raises Your own life.
7.FA
The original Greek uses the same word for the fruit of faith and for the gift of faith. It is allowed in this
It is important to consider that faith is a matter of fruit expressed in character. Implicit are
qualities such as: the fulfillment of duty, fidelity, trustworthiness, confidence, loyalty,
constancy, firmness, diligence, punctuality, truthfulness. He in whom the fruit of faith is active enjoys
implicitly obedience and eventual trust in God. One of the emphases of the Scriptures is that
those who are classified as servants of God are kept to manifest the fruit of faith,
as much as establishing fidelity in service (Mt 24:45-46; 25:21; I Co 4:2). Paul's constancy
in your ministry, it impressively illustrates the fruit of faith in human character (Acts 20:24; Rev 2:
The fruit of faith guides the believer beyond mere sentimental emotionalism, into a decision
firm to rest in the hands of the Lord.
8.MANSIDAO.
Meekness is the inner grace that reaches out towards God and to human beings. The term
original 'prautes', interpreted as meekness is equivalent to gentleness or kindness. The word of
origin means: to calm, soothe, tame or tranquilize. In the biblical standard, meekness belongs
the one who serves; was called 'the garment of a servant'. The meek man was willing to serve, not
because you possessed power, but because he was ready to become an instrument of God in
great accomplishments. Meekness simply means a surrender to the will of God. God
he delights when the believer allows the Holy Spirit to express the fruit of gentleness in their life.
Indeed, for God favors the meek (Ps 25:9; Mt 5:5; Rom 12:3; 2 Cor 10:1; 1 Pet 3:4).
Tiago left a principle of God's procedure with humanity - "Humble yourselves
before the Lord, and He will exalt you” (James 4:10).
Meekness belongs to the character of the servant of God. Jesus Christ, who conquered death with power,
hell and the grave, surely said about himself: 'I am meek and humble of spirit.'
heart” (Mt. 11:29).
9.TEMPERANCE.
The ability for personal self-government to ensure total control of appetites and instincts is the
the result of the spiritual fruit temperance, or self-control. The original Greek word 'egkrateia'
denotes: "holding with a firm hand". The believer in whom the Spirit reaches to temper,
control and restrain all your impulses and motivations, will be kept in balance and none

Life with cold cynicism is not even that conception of 'holding firm'. The self-control proposed to the son.
God does not imply a strict discipline for him to control his conduct. That's not it.
The self-control of the Christian means that all of his being, spirit, soul, and body, are under the
control of Christ. It means that he is a person completely governed by God. Every aspect of
your life — spiritual, moral or physical, is subject to the sovereignty of the Holy Spirit. It means
that he is "a man under authority." The control of his interests, attitudes, actions, constitutes a
right that he ceded and delivered to the Holy Spirit.
Temperance is an essential quality for Christian service and for every mature believer.
1:8; 2:3; 2Peter 1:8; 2:11; Proverbs 16:32; 25:28). Today, sanctification is mainly related to the
separation of people to live and serve God. The secret of sanctification is, above all,
allow the Spirit to overcome in us the temptations of the old nature and take control of everything
our being; shaping in us the character of Christ, which is perfect and fully holy.
C.BATIZA
We can note throughout the New Testament that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father (John 15:26), and from the Son (John 16:27).
Thus, the Holy Spirit is the element in which the believer is immersed in the form of baptism. Jesus is
who baptizes or immerses the believer in the Holy Spirit (Mt 3:11).
The reception of the Holy Spirit is illustrated as baptism, a deep immersion in the Divine Spirit,
what reveals the glorious way the Spirit surrounds and fills the believer's soul. All of our being
becomes saturated and dominated by the restoring presence of God, through His Holy Spirit.
D.Cure
By falling into sin, man became subject to the deterioration of his body which ends in death. Only in
resurrection, at the coming of Jesus, is that the redemption of the body will take place, for this scourge
will be canceled. While we await the day of redemption, we should enjoy the firstfruits that this
victory is granted through the ministry of the Holy Spirit (Rom 8:11).
F. SNATCHES AND GLORIFIES
When the moment of the conclusion of the present dispensation has arrived, which will begin with the
the coming of Christ, there will be a great movement of the Spirit over the face of the earth. The same power
who resurrected Christ from the dead will resurrect all the dead in Christ, who lie in
their tombs and will transform the living (believers) in the blink of an eye. They will be like the Lord,
clothed with celestial bodies and glorified. On this same day, all fatigue will have ended,
All pain and illness for the people of God. Death will be defeated forever. For this reason, all honor
should be given to the Spirit in gratitude for His ministry. Many ask if the Holy Spirit
will be with the believer in heaven, and the answer is that even after death, the Holy Spirit in the believer is
like a fountain of living water that springs up to eternal life (John 4:14). The dwelling of the Spirit
represents only the beginning of eternal life that will be completed in future life. 'Our
salvation is now. closer to us than when we first accepted the faith," wrote Paul.
talking about the state of salvation that has begun now and will be consummated in future life. The Spirit
represents the first part of this complete salvation, which can be illustrated in three ways:
1. Commercial — the Spirit is described as the guarantee of our inheritance (Eph 1:14; II Cor 5:5). The Spirit
Holy is our guarantee that our liberation will be complete.
2.Agricultural - the Holy Spirit represents the first fruits of future life (Rom 8:23). The offering of
a part represents the whole. The Holy Spirit in believers represents the firstfruits of the glorious
upcoming harvest, as He will lead us to Christ.
3.Domestic - Just as children receive only a portion of candy before the banquet,
for now, only "will prove... the virtues of the future century" (Heb 6:5). Just like Christ
He granted an early evidence of the portion reserved for His own, thus He will give the Spirit.
again to His (Rev 7:17).
3. SINS AGAINST THE HOLY SPIRIT
To sin against the Holy Spirit is probably the most horrendous thing that can exist. The Spirit

that is beside us. Despite this, many believers sin against the Holy Spirit. We find
In the Bible, there are five admonitions concerning our relationships with the Holy Spirit. Of these
prayer, resistance, and blasphemy refer to the attitudes of sinners. The other three, lying, grieving
and to extinguish, refer to the believers.
A. BY THE DISSENTER:
I.RESISTING THE HOLY SPIRIT — At 7:37-60; Ex 32:9, Dt 9:6; II Chr 30:8; Prov 29:1; Gn 6:3.
Estevão was testifying to a group of Jews rebelling against God, and accused them of being
resisting the Holy Spirit (Acts 7:51). His preaching was so powerful and well-argued that the
your opponents could not answer you, and then they stoned you.
There is an intrinsic relationship between resisting the Spirit and not believing in God. Resisting the
Spirit includes all human attitudes that accept a degree of obedience that is less than
complete surrender to God. This means that people who live in a state of deliberate
resisting the Holy Spirit, they lose their own happiness and personal adjustment. To resist Him is an invitation
The human misery.
The Holy Spirit is the divine Agent responsible for reconciling man with God.
Resisting the Spirit is like someone who is drowning and refuses a lifeline that is offered to them.
therefore, the person who resists the Holy Spirit is rejecting the help of the only Agent
what can save.
The consequence of this resistance is eternal death.
A.Ways to Resist the Spirit
1. Inattention - Not paying attention to what the Spirit says is inattention and in this way one resists.
the voice of the Holy Spirit. Even if it is an unconscious act, to make light of it or not to have time
to hear the voice of the Spirit is an act of rebellion that originates in the spirit of rebellion of a
cauterized conscience — "The man who is often rebuked, hardens his neck, will be
"broken suddenly, without there being a cure" (Prov. 29:1).
2. Procrastination - The person who constantly postpones their decision to accept Christ resists the
voice of the Holy Spirit. He then realizes that the emotion of the Spirit becomes weaker and weaker, until
that it ends up disappearing entirely — “How will we escape if we do not pay attention to
such a great salvation?” (Heb 2:3; Gen 6:3).
2. THE BLASPHEMY AGAINST THE HOLY SPIRIT
This is the most serious sin, as Jesus said in Matthew 12:31-32. And as such, it will not be forgiven.
Jesus expelled a demon from a deaf-mute man, and this caused great admiration among the people.
who was already preparing to receive him as the Messiah. The Pharisees claimed that He operated by being
tied to Beelzebub, a pagan deity, who was the prince of demons. In Mark 3:20-30,
the accusation was directly linked to Satan, and yet the power that operated in Jesus was the power
of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, these accusations were very serious, constituting a sin against the
Spirit is a challenge against His peculiar prerogative, that is, to call the sinner to Christ.
Something very important to note is that not every sin against the Holy Spirit is blasphemy, but
every blasphemy is a sin. The word blasphemy means: 'to deliberately and maliciously utter'
abusive words against God. When someone deliberately insults the Spirit, they are nullifying the
the influence that the Spirit has in drawing us to Christ. Whoever commits such a sin will never obtain forgiveness,
not because God is not merciful, but because the person has gone to the extreme on the path
of evil. In his heart there is no more 'sadness according to God that produces repentance for
"salvation" (II Co 7:10). Without this "sorrow," repentance is impossible. The Father awaits.

when someone rejects the call of the Spirit to Christ, as the only means of salvation.
However, although it is possible to commit this sin in our days, we believe that, relatively
few have committed it. Often the devil leads a person to think that they have committed the sin
unforgivable, when they really did not do it. The fact that someone becomes distressed, thinking they have committed this
sin, is already proof that he has not committed it yet. the Holy Spirit is still drawing that person to
Christ, and if you obey the sweet voice of the Spirit, you will be saved.
B. BY THE BELIEVERS:
Believers can also sin against the Holy Spirit, although these sins are of
another nature, 1 Lying to the Holy Spirit — Acts 5:3-4
Ananias was guilty of his offense. Peter asked: 'Why has Satan filled your heart to
"Why did you lie to the Holy Spirit?" (Acts 5:3). Ananias was seeking the praise of men.
in the name of brotherly love. He professed to be faithfully serving God when at that moment,
was serving itself. Lying to the Spirit is frustrating His purpose on earth and destroying
those virtues that He represents. It is not surprising that God found such disappointment and
if falsehood were so offensive as to order the destruction of Ananias.
2. Grieve the Spirit - Eph 4:30 (it concerns the inner dwelling of the Holy Spirit).
The meaning line of the word 'entristecer' is 'to make unhappy' or 'to cause sadness'. and the synonyms
Possible are: to hurt, to offend or to distress. Sanders writes: "to sadden is a word of love."
Someone can infuriate an enemy, but cannot sadden them. Only someone who loves can be.
saddened". Therefore, the grieving of the Spirit is primarily the action of a believer, which is why it is
that the Spirit takes an attitude of tenderness and affection towards the believers. In what way can
does it sadden the Spirit? The believer grieves the Spirit and hinders His operation when he is led
for carnal reasons, manifesting the following attitudes:
a) Desires and impure words — Eph 4:29-31
Let no corrupt speech come out of your mouth, but only what is good for building up,
to give grace to those who hear” (Eph 4:29) — It is a warning to the believer, not to sin with the
words that come out of the mouth. The Holy Spirit is very sensitive, as symbolized by the dove.
The occupation is with the glory of God and with the well-being of the believer. The Holy Spirit becomes sad when
I see a person doing and saying such things that will also harm their spiritual life.
believer. The Spirit does not dwell in a heart from which evil thoughts and desires proceed, well
like foul words, because He is the Holy Spirit. It is very sad when a believer falls into a
failure of these.
The sins of the human spirit are repulsive to the Holy Spirit (Eph 4:31) - "All bitterness, and wrath, and
anger, and shouting, and blasphemies, and all malice be taken away from among you.” All these attitudes are
coming from the flesh and are part of the old nature. We must crucify these attitudes, in order to
may the Holy Spirit take pleasure in us.
b) To love worldly things
The Word of God says in I John 2:15 - 'Do not love the world, nor the things in the world. If anyone...
but the love of the Father does not reside in it." The Christian must live separately from the world, from its
pleasures and the evil spirit that dominates and influences all corrupt practices. The Holy Spirit

to be and have holy jealousy, when the believer loves worldly things (James 4:5).
c) Disbelief
The Holy Spirit feels very offended when someone doubts the truthfulness of the Word of God.
This unbelief can completely separate us from His company (Heb 3:12).
d) Ingratitude
The lack of recognition towards God for His favors and benefits, for His love and
mercy also greatly saddens the Holy Spirit.
The psalmist David sang: 'Bless the Lord, O my soul... and forget not any of his benefits.'
His benefits" (Ps 103:1-2).
e) Lack of prayer
Not praying means avoiding contact with the Holy Spirit and thus, the Lord's help is disregarded.
prayer is as necessary as material food, and this is the reason why many believers are
deficient in your spiritual life. The Spirit grieves when we reject His help.
Rebellion
The Bible says: "But they were rebellious, and grieved His Holy Spirit" (Isaiah 63:10). Therefore, the
rebellion saddens the Spirit of God.
Dishonesty
As for everything else, brother, whatever is true, whatever is honest... let this occupy your mind.
thought” (Fp4:8) “Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but strive to do what is honorable in the sight of all
men" (Rm 12:17) "Let us walk honestly, as in the day... not in dishonesty..." (Rm 13:13).
Bitterness
All bitterness... be removed from among you (Eph 4:31). "Taking care that no one is deprived of
the grace of God, and that no root of bitterness, springing up, troubles you...” (Heb 12:15).
i) Lack of attention to warnings
Jesus said about the Holy Spirit: 'He will guide you into all truth... and He will announce to you the
things that are to come" (John 16:13). The lack of attention to the warnings of the Holy Spirit can cause
spiritual and physical gifts (Rev 2 and 3; Heb 3:7-8; John 33:14-22; Prov 1:23-33). j) Disobedience to the orders
divine
Man, no matter how good he is, is not exempt from disobeying God. Due to his
disobedience to God, Saul suffered great losses (1 Samuel 15 - 16:14).
k) Carnal passions and sinful acts
From a spiritual point of view, the strength of any man depends on the Holy Spirit of God (Lk
4:6). Even Samson, who was so extraordinarily used by God when the Holy Spirit came upon him
his possession hindered the operation of the Spirit in his life by giving way to carnal passions
(Jz 16:7,20,21). First, the grieving of the Holy Spirit occurs with the motivations
interiors, and He who probes the hearts and knows their true intentions, knows that soon
later. this will turn into actions. Paul. writing to the Ephesians said: 'And do not grieve the
Spirit of God, in whom you are sealed for the day of redemption" (Eph 4:30). Although the Church in
Ephesus started remarkably well (Acts 19), a generation later, John wrote: "Remember,"
then, where you fell, repent, and practice the first works; if not, I will come to you shortly, and
"I will remove your lampstand from its place unless you repent" (Rev 2:5). A church that is guilty of
to sadden the Spirit is clearly in spiritual decline.
The Spirit's response to the fact that He is saddened by the believer is to produce conviction. In
instead of relating in communion, He ministers the conviction of sin. The joy, the power and the
the communion that normally characterizes the life of the believer is broken when the Spirit is
saddened. This does not mean that the Spirit ends divine life in the person, but He interrupts
the divine communion, and therefore, the believer loses usefulness for the service of God. The responsive action
for the believer who finds themselves in this situation, it is to confess and abandon sin, and thus
abandon what saddened the Spirit.
3. TURN OFF THE SPIRIT
1 Thessalonians 5:19 (has to do with the pouring out for service).
The term 'extinguish' or the equivalents 'suppress' or 'put out' give the idea of extinguishing the fire or the
calls. Once again, this offense against the Holy Spirit is committed by the believers. Paul
He wrote to the church of Thessalonica: 'Do not quench the Spirit' (I Thess 5:19-21). When someone quenches the
Spirit, he deliberately hinders the action of the Spirit, opposing His will and refusing to
obey His calling. Sanders writes: "When secular methods replace the
spiritual, when the praise of man is preferred over the praise of God, when the worship is directed by
man, instead of being led by God, the Spirit can be extinguished.
It is not always the case, this has suggested that the believer grieves the Spirit by saying 'yes' to
Satan and saying 'no' to God. Certainly, the Spirit is extinguished when man takes the
self-control and the flesh governs your life. Anything that denies the ministry of the Spirit
Saint extinguishes the Spirit. He is extinguished when human opinion prevails, when His gift is
ignored, Your work resisted or when the commitment to God's work is mere hypocrisy.
When someone, symbolically speaking, "throws cold water" on any aspect of the ministry of
Spirit, is extinguishing the Spirit. The aim of the free flame of the Holy Spirit is to consume the dross.
and to produce a sanctified life. Sometimes, the lack of providing fuel (our submission),
It can be a way to extinguish the fire of the Spirit.
CONCLUSION
We saw this semester, the operation of the Holy Spirit convincing of sin, regenerating,
inhabiting, sanctifying and producing His fruit, baptizing, healing, catching away and glorifying,
acting this way throughout the human experience. We also studied the various ways to sin
and to grieve the Holy Spirit, since resisting and blaspheming against the Spirit are
concerning the sinner; and lying, grieving, and extinguishing refer to the actions of believers who
they hinder the operation of the Holy Spirit in their lives. The Holy Spirit is the reality of presence
of God. May we keep among us and with us the 'glory of God,' the Holy Spirit,
communing with Him, seeking Him diligently, revering Him with a life of holiness and
doing what is pleasing before Him, through a life of obedience, submission, and gratitude.
