The Original

Deep Astonishment
Instructions

We had quite a few requests for this. the Astonishment Goddess has granted your
wish!

In a moment...you can dive into the Big Deep that started it all (based on the PH
Anything Deck from Art of Astonishment).
-

But first:

The pluses of the original Deep Astonishment...is that just about ANY four letter
word or name can be used...and the deck is spread face up on the table (instead of
between your hands) where it's easy to openly locate and move the secret letter
cards to the top while searching for spec's card.

Down side is that you can't give half the deck out to be handled/shuffled...you
have to force a card...the set-up effect is not as visual as the plunger rise...and
of course...it doesn't have the joyous new Deep Clear Wallet...thus the creation of
Deep Clear.

But if the upsides of the Original Deep Astonishment appeal to you...it's easy to
modify it to work with your Deep Clear Wallet.

Note that you still have to ask for any four word...as that's what the Deep Clear
wallet is designed for. A four letter word is still the best...as it's a funny bit
to ask for a favorite four letter word...and the process is much faster and
smoother than locating and moving cards for what could be an eight letter word.

Okay. Read the original Deep Astonishment instructions first to get the basic idea.
And if you want to give it a shot...come back here for the do-it-yourself details.

Note that these are the original ancient 20 year old Instructions!

Original Deep Astonishment

Conversion Kit

The original Deep Astonishment uses a full deck of blue cards that have a double
set of all the letters (that's the alphabet repeated twice...minus one Q and one
X). Original also used a magnetic Joker (but no black back).

Then there are three normal red back cards on top (four of hearts, four of diamonds
and 2 of spades) so that the blue back Alphabet deck appears to be a normal red
back deck.
If you want...you can reverse this and put the Letter cards on red backs and use
normal blue cover cards.

Ok. Get rid of one joker plus the 4 of hearts and four of diamonds and Two of
Spades from the letter deck.

This leaves you with 50 cards to write two sets of the alphabet on (this includes
one joker). You Only draw one letter Q.and one letter X.

The Rest of the letters are all done twice...except for the one second Q and
X...which don't draw. So you have a double alphabet on the backs of the
cards...expect there's only one Q and one X in the deck...not two.

IMPORTANT: When marking the letters on the cards...use the same color/value card
for each double set of letters.

In other words. For the two letter G's...use the three of hearts and the three of
diamonds. For the two S letters...use the king of spades and the king of clubs.

This way when your looking for the correct letter card from the face up
spread...let's say a G...you just need to look for any red three. When looking for
an S...just look for any black king. Thus no need to know the card suite.

Since the cards are all face up on the table when you need to locate the letter
cards...you need a way to know which card has which letter on its back.

THE DEEP LETTER/CARD CODE: In the original instructions here we used a secret cue
card that showed you which letters were on the back of which cards.

These two letter/card codes were glued onto the backs of the two jokers...which you
held in your hand...to sneak peaks at the code as you located the needed letter
cards

On the letter/card code: Use red ink for the red cards and black ink for all the
black card ...so you can instantly see, for example, if the Letter B is on the back
of a red two or a black two.

Example: F7: this is all in black...so you know that there's an F on the back of
both black 7's.

If your letter/card code showed a red H8...you'd know that there's an H on the back
of both red 8's.

And here's another improvement: instead of hiding the letter/card codes on the
backs of jokers....It's much better to have the letter/card code list openly
written on the back of a "lucky dollar" ...or on a folded paper...or even on your
smart phone.

You don't even try to hide this. Just say its this weird system for finding your
soul mate card. You can give a quick flash of the code to your audience...as no one
knows what it means.

You could even add in some extra numbers/odd symbols etc to make your "Soul Mate
System" look more complex...to help camouflage the letter/card code.

This way you can now openly look at the letter/card code during the letter card
finding process...as now there's nothing to hide or be sneaky about.

Note that in the original all the card letters were made from new deck order. A
letter A is on an Ace...letter B on a 2 etc. But you can mix and match cards and
letters any way you want...

To adapt this all to your Deep Clear wallet:

1. Don't use your Deep Clear Deck.

INSTEAD: Make your own Original Deep Astonishment deck on blue or red back
cards...drawing a double set of the Alphabet...minus one Q

2. The Original Deep Astonishment uses a magnetic joker...with a drawn on quote

mark.
INSTEAD: Just use the black joker from Deep Clear.

3. Original Deep Astonishment uses a normal card that also has a quote mark on it
that starts inside the wallet.
INSTEAD: Just use your Deep Clear cover card joker that has the explanation
mark...then slide it inside your Deep Clear Wallet...same as in Deep Clear set up.

And finally...write your letter/card code list (in red and black) on the back of a
dollar...or note paper...or inside your smart phone.

And that's it. Just remember that when the instructions talk about the two of
spades...you're using the black magnetic joker instead.

Set-up Change 1.
The black Joker should be somewhere face up in the center of the face up deck.

Set-up change 2.
Get hold of another normal red back joker and place it under the two red fours that
are at the top of the deck. This now leaves this normal joker third down from the
top of the deck.

Reason for this is it gives you one extra red cover card on top to help hide the
secret blue deck.

Handling Change 1:
The first card you pull and discard from the spread (while looking for the Soul
Mate Card) should be the face up black joker. Slide this joker to the back (left
end) of the spread deck...so it's now the top/back card of the deck (same as Deep
Clear).

Handling Change 2:Instead of placing all the magic word cards on the table after
being pulled from the spread...take each letter card as you find it...and slide it
to the back of the spread...so they go above the black joker.

Again...this just seems as though you're casually discarding card's as you try to
find the one Soul Mate Card.

Handling Change 3:After all the magic word cards have been moved to the top of the
deck...

Square up the the face-up deck and hold it from above with your lefty fingers. So
you're now all set to continue the same Deep wallet Steal from Deep Clear.

You're now ready for the slightly modified original Deep Astonishment!
