1. An ancient banyan which had grown through the cracks of an abandoned mosque was the only tree in
the street called Gali Ram Nath. Little Ali’s kite had caught in its branches.

2. The boy, bare foot and clad only in a torn shirt, ran along the cobbled stones of the narrow street to
where his grandfather sat nodding dreamily in the sunshine of their back courtyard.
Hinglish: Ladka, jo nange pair tha aur sirf ek phati purani shirt pehni thi, gali ke pathar se bane raste par
daudta hua pichhle aangan mein gaya jahan uska dada dhoop mein sapne dekhte hue baitha tha.
3. ‘Grandfather!’ shouted the boy. ‘The kite has gone!’

4. The old man woke from his daydream with a start and, raising his head, displayed a beard which would
have been white had it not been dyed with mehndi leaves.

se na range hoti to safed hoti.
5. ‘Did the twine break?’ he asked. ‘I know that kite-twine is not what it used to be.’

6. ‘No, Grandfather, the kite is stuck in the banyan tree.’

7. The old man chuckled. ‘You have yet to learn how to fly a kite properly, my child. And I am too old to
teach you, that is the pity of it. But you shall have another.’
Hinglish: Buda aadmi hansa. "Tumhe abhi sahi se patang udana seekhna hai, beta. Aur main itna buda ho
gaya hoon ki sikhane layak nahi raha. Par tumhe ek aur milegi."

8. He had just finished making a new kite from bamboo, paper and thin silk, and it lay in the sun, firming
it up. It was a pale pink kite, with a small green tail.
Hinglish: Usne abhi abhi ek nayi patang banayi thi jo baans, kagaz aur patle resham se bani thi. Wo
dhoop mein rakhi thi taaki mazboot ho jaye. Patang halki gulabi thi, choti si hari puchh ke saath.
9. The old man handed to Ali, and the boy raised himself on his toes and kissed his grandfather’s
hollowed out cheek.

10. ‘I will not lose this one,’ he said. ‘This kite will fly like a bird.’

11. And he turned on his heels and skipped out of the courtyard.

12. The old man remained dreaming in the sun. His kite shop had gone, the premises having been sold
many years ago to a junk dealer.

wo jagah kabadi ko bech di gayi thi.
13. But he still made kites for his own amusement and as playthings for Ali.

14. It was in those days that the Nawab came to his shop and said, “Ustaad, you have the hands of an
artist. I will order a dozen kites for the palace.”

Mahal ke liye barah patangon ka aadesh deta hoon.”
15. Then the Nawab’s sons and grandsons came to the shop, to buy kites in the spring.

18. No one thought of visiting the old man’s shop, hidden away in a lane.
Hinglish: Koi bhi us bude aadmi ki dukaan tak nahi jata, jo ek chhoti gali mein chhupi hui thi.
19. It was a small place, cluttered with bits of paper and bamboo, and the smell of glue and paint still
hung in the air.
Hinglish: Wo ek choti si jagah thi, jahan kagaz, baans ke tukde bikhre hote the, aur hawa mein ab bhi
glue aur paint ki mehak thi.
20. Ali came back into the courtyard, his kite held high in his hands.

21. “It flies! It flies!” he shouted. “The new kite flies!”

22. The old man smiled and nodded, and once again he was lost in the dreams of the past.
