Preface

This pedagogical guide includes translation of the text and answers

of all the exercises given in the textbook, workbook and revision

worksheets. The book also includes lesson planning explained here

through Learning objectives and Approach. The book is helpful for

teachers, students as well as the parents.

The Approach section helps you understand on how to take up the

chapter in the class to be able to include all the grammar topics and

writing skills given in the chapter. The book follows ‘grammaire

implicite’ approach and hence the students are made to discover the

rule and use of the grammar topics through text and sentences and

the classroom discussion. A step-by-step explanation is provided

for teaching each chapter in class. It is important to mention that

only one approach has been explained in the book, though there

can be various ways for teaching the content of the book. It is only a

help guide and thus it is not mandatory for the facilitator to follow

this approach.

1 La France

Learning objectives

The objective of this chapter is to initiate understanding of France and to provide

some basic information to students about France. Since this is the first French class
for them, purpose is to introduce them to the country. At the end of the chapter, the
students will know where is France located, its’ capital, its’ synonym, colour of the
flag, and some famous things of France.

Approach
The teacher may begin by brainstorming with the students, asking them what all
they know about France, for example: Where is it located?, What are the colours
of the flag of France ?, What is the capital of France?, Do you know what is France
famous for?, etc.
The students may or may not be able to answer all these questions. The purpose is
only to start an informal discussion about the country.
The teacher may now bring the attention of the students to the chapter and start
discussing the information provided.
Play the true-false game with the students in the class to check if they remember
details about the country or not. The teacher may now do the questions given at the
end of the chapter with the students.
Activity 2 is a very interesting activity to practice interculturality. The teacher may
ask the students to try themselves first and then discuss in class. This activity will
allow them to draw a comparison between France and India.
Also allow some time to do the colouring activity (activity 1) for fun.

2 L’alphabet

Learning objectives

The objective of this chapter is to teach students the alphabet in French. They will
learn to pronounce all the letters and learn a name for each alphabet.

Approach
The teacher may begin by using the QR code given in the chapter to teach students
how to pronounce alphabet in French.
Once the pronunciation of all the letters is practiced, the teacher may ask the
students to open the chapter 2 in the book. The teacher may ask students to read
the first letter written in the book. Since the students have already practiced the
pronunciation, they will say ‘Aa’ not ‘A’. If not, the teacher is adviced to correct them.
The teacher may now read the first letter as: “A comme avion” and ask the students
to repeat after him/her.
After repeating the same till letter E, the teacher may now ask the students to read
and the teacher will repeat after them. This way, the students will learn that in
English we say “ A for apple”, in French ‘for’ is replaced by ‘comme’.
The teacher may now ask them to try doing question at the back. This will reinforce
all the concepts taught in the class.
It is advised that the teacher allow the students some time to do activity 3 and 4 as
they are related to alphabet learnt in the chapter.

3 Je m’appelle…

Learning objectives

The objective of this chapter is to teach students how to say begin a conversation by
telling their name in French and asking others’ name. They will also learn to end
the conversation by using ‘Au revoir’. They will learn how to say name and surname
in French and that surname is written in capital letters. They will use French words
for addressing different genders and age group (Ms., Mrs., Mr…). The students will
learn both formal and informal way of asking someone’s name. To spell out one’s
name will also be taught in this chapter.

Approach
The teacher may invite one volunteer in front of the class. The teacher may begin
the conversation by saying ‘Bonjour’. The student repeats the same. The teacher
may now say “je m’appelle… . Comment tu t’appelles ?”. The student will be hesitant
in replying as he doesn’t know what to say. The teacher is advised to help the student
tell his name. Once the student tells his name using “Je m’appelle…”, the teacher
should say ‘Enchanté/e”. The student repeats the same.
Now that the other students have heard this small conversation and know how
to participate, the teacher may invite another volunteer and repeat the same. It
is advised to practice this 3-4 times between teacher-student and then 4-5 times
between student- student so that the students learn not just to answer but to begin
the conversation as well.
Once the informal dialogue is practiced, the teacher may introduce the formal
question “Comment vous appelez-vous ?”. The similar pattern can be followed
to practice this question. The teacher may introduce ‘monsieur’, ‘madame’, and
‘mademoiselle’ in this conversation and tell them about the use and the meaning of
these addressing words.

Mon Passepost 0 - Teacher’s Manual

11
The teacher may now ask students to tell their full name. He/She may star noting
few on the board in the manner as shown in the book. (Paul LEROY, Prénom: Paul,
Nom: LEROY). The teacher may now ask them if they noticed that nom is not name
but surname and that surname is written in capital. He/she may ask all the students
to write their name in the similar pattern in their notebook. The teacher may also
ask them to do question 4 of the back exercises.
The teacher may now ask the students to read the dialogues given in the chapter.
They will quickly understand as they have already done these conversations in
class. They should now be asked to do the back exercises.
One whole class can be devoted to learning to spell one’s name. The teacher may
ask everyone to say his/her name and spell it as well in the following manner: Je
m’appelle Sophie. S O P H I E.
Activity 5 must be taken up in the class so that the students can know few names
of French boys and girls. Activity 6 is a good practice for all that they have learnt
in the chapter.

Learning objectives
In this chapter, the students will learn to greet in French at different point in time
during the day. They will also learn to ask one’s well being and will be able to reply
to this question as per the situation in both formal and informal way.

Approach
The teacher may begin by asking students to greet each other. Some will say ‘hi’,
others will say ‘hello’, some might say ‘good morning’. The teacher can explain
that there are many ways of greeting in English and similarly in French, we have
different ways of greeting. The teacher may now introduce ‘Bonjour, Coucou, Salut,
Bonsoir, Bonne nuit,… . It is advised to use the QR code for correct pronunciation.
The teacher may advise the students to do question 2.
The students will now learn to say ‘How are you?, I am fine., I am not fine., I am OK.,
etc. in French. The teacher may begin by the simple version “Comment ca va ?” and
the answer “Ca va bien, merci.” The teacher may now ask them if they are always
very fine so some time they do not feel well or happy. He/ she may ask them to open
topic “Comment ca va ?” in the chapter and discuss all five emotions and how to
express them in French.
The teacher may invite two volunteers to come in front and present a dialogue.
They should exchange atleast three dialogues. The students have learnt Bonjour,
comment tu t’appelles ?, Enchante, Comment ca va?, Au revoir, etc. they will use all
these words and sentences in their conversation. The teacher may now ask each
one of them to write a similar dialogue in their notebook.
The formal way of asking one’s well being can be introduced now. Since students
have already done formal and informal way of asking one’s name, it is now easy for
them to understand the difference between the formal and informal way. Once the
teacher has taught “Comment allez-vous “ and “je vais bien, merci.”, he/she may ask
them to try question 3 in the book and the rest of the questions as well.
Activity 7 and 8 should be taken up in the class at the end of the chapter as they are
the best mean to recapitulate the learning and are fun to do.

Learning objectives
In this chapter, the students will learn to count in French from 0 till 20. They will
also learn the names of few animals. At the end of this chapter, the students will be
able to count the things and name the animals in French.

Approach
The teacher may begin by playing QR code in the class asking students to repeat
what they hear. First, only the first video should be played so that the students learn
to count till 10. Once they have learnt to pronounce the numbers in French, the
teacher may ask all to students to read the counting from 0 to 10 one by one from
their book. When the students pronounce incorrectly, the teacher may correct.
Since so many students will say numbers till 10, it would be practiced sufficiently in
the class. The teacher may now ask them to do question 3.
In the next class, the teacher may play the next video in QR code and practice
numbers from 11 to 20 with the students. The teacher may ask the students to read
aloud from 0 to 20. The teacher may now divide the class in four teams and each
team has to say the number in French correctly. The teacher will give number to
each team. For each correct answer, the team gets ten points. If they don’t pronounce
correctly, next team will get the chance and the team will get five bonus points for
correct answer. The teacher may ask them to do question 4 and 5 in book.
The teacher may now introduce them to names of animals in French through the
topic “Les animaux” from the chapter. The teacher may ask students to come in
front one by one and draw few things or animals. The class has to say how many
and what are they. For example, the student can draw 3 elephants, the class has to
say “trois elephants”. The teacher may now ask the students to do question 1, 2, 6
and 7.
The teacher may allow them to move in the class to help them fill activity 9 in the
book. This way they will practice not only the names of animals but also learn to ask
and answer the question “Quel est votre animal prefere ?”. Ask them to do activity
10 in the book.
