Audioscript
Teacher: Good morning, everyone … As I mentioned yesterday, our school is planning
to get involved in an environmental protection project, and I’d like to discuss which
issues you consider the most important. Now, litter is something we can see all around us.
Why do you think there’s so much litter. Penny?
Girl 1: I think it’s because of lack of education. Lots of people just don’t know that it’s
wrong to drop litter.
Teacher: Right. And what problems does litter cause? Yes, David?
Boy 1: Well, the streets are dirty of course – and if litter is left too long people can even
catch diseases from it.
Teacher: Exactly. What other environmental problems can you think of? Deborah?
Girl 2: Air pollution is a really serious problem. Factories and cars pollute the air, and
it’s ready bad for people.
Teacher: Yes, it can cause serious health problems. And it doesn’t only effect people.
Trees and plants are damaged by air pollution as well. Yes, Penny?
Girl 1: Isn’t water pollution a serious problem too? I know that factories dump waste
into rivers and the sea is polluted with oil from tankers.
Teacher: Yes, you’re right. And what effects does that have? David?
Boy 1: For one thing, people suffer from stomach problems if they drink polluted water.
Another thing is that fish are killed, and rivers are contaminated so that nothing can live
in them.
Teacher: And what about the destruction of forests? How does this come about?
Deborah?
Girl 2: People cut down or burn forests, usually because they want to use the land for
farming or building.
Teacher: That’s right. And what effects does this have? Yes, Mike?
Boy 2: Animals and plants lose their homes, for one thing, and then they may even
become extinct. Another problem it causes is that people have less oxygen to breath
because it’s trees that produce oxygen.
Teacher: Yes, that’s right. Now, which of these problems do you think you’d like …

Shop assistant: We’ve got it in white, black, red and purple. What size do you want?
Customer: Medium.
Shop assistant: OK, in medium we’ve got black and red.
Customer: And in purple?
Shop assistant: No, just black and red.
Customer: OK, red. Can I try it on?
Shop assistant: Yes, of course. The changing rooms are over there.
(pause)
Shop assistant: Is it OK?
Customer: Yes, I’ll take it.
Shop assistant: That’s £10.95. Would you like to pay by credit card or with cash?
Customer: Cash please. Here’s twenty.
Shop assistant: OK, thanks, that’s nine pounds, 5 p change and here’s your receipt.

D. It is too difficult to use.
Listen to four people talking about how they keep in touch.
G: I use my phone for everything. I text most of the time because it’s quick and cheap,
so I text my friends and my boyfriend. I like texts because they’re quiet; nobody knows
what you’re saying. My mom used to call me all the time to check that I’m OK, but now
she can text me, which is much better. I get really annoyed when you’re talking to
someone though, and they’re texting someone else. I think that’s really rude.
2
M1: I use the Internet a lot. I use Skype to keep in touch with my family because my
daughter lives in France, so I don’t see her very often. And the phone is expensive. With
the Internet, I can see my grandchildren; it’s wonderful. My son sets up the computer for
me. I haven’t learned how to do that yet. And sometimes it crashes during the phone call,
which is annoying, or I can’t see the picture properly. But usually it’s fine. Generally, I
think technology is wonderful. When I was younger, we only dreamed of having video
phone calls, but now it’s possible, and it’s free.
3
M2: We use a blog. It’s a great way to tell people about your travel experiences. We’ve
been to so many places already, and it’s nice to tell people about them. And you can put
photos there of the people you meet and the places you visit. The best thing is that, as
soon as you write the blog, people all over the world can read it. The only problem we
have is when we can’t find an Internet café.
4
W: I’ve just started to use social media sites like Facebook. I found some friends I
haven’t seen for years, and it was great to get in touch again. The only problem is that I
keep checking it when I should be working.
part 4. Listen to 4 speakers talking about extreme weather events. Then , fill in the
blanks.
Location Type of Disaster Cause Effects
New York, USA Snowstorm Heavy snow, City stopped,
strong wind (1)__________
Near Canberra, Fire Tornado Hot, dry weather + Fire tornado, very
Australia (3) __________ scary
Cornwall, Britain (4)_______ Heavy rain, river Streets and houses
rose flooded
Unknown city (5) _______ Ground shaking Buildings fell down
Speaker 1: I’d heard the weather forecast the previous evening – they predicted some
snow. But no one expected the amount we got. Imagine, the centre of New York stopped
in its tracks by a snowstorm! The city had a power cut too – you know, no electricity for
a while. I don’t know whether this was because the wind blew so hard or if it was the
type of snow that fell.
Speaker 2: My family used to live just outside the Australian city of Canberra. On that
day, there was a storm. It was so hot and dry. Then we had a lightning storm and that’s
what started the fire, and with it, a fire tornado. Awesome to watch, but really scary too.
I’ll never forget it.
Speaker 3: I live in a fishing village in Cornwall, which is in the southwest of Britain.
We’ve had plenty of bad weather, so we all know what to do in case of a flood. Last
week, so much rain fell that the river rose two metres above normal. It poured for hours.
We watched the dirty water flow along our street as it flooded our village.
Speaker 4: There was a big earthquake a few years ago. The earth shook and then the
roads opened up, and lots of buildings fell down. Since then we have had smaller ones,
and lots of them. It can be pretty scary but now everyone knows what they have to do.
