● Definition of Mass Media


Mass Media means the tools or technologies that are used to share information with a large number of people at the same time.
These tools include newspapers, magazines, radio, television, films, and the internet. The word “mass” means a big group of
people, and “media” means the method or way of communication. So, mass media is the method of reaching a large audience using
communication tools.
Mass media plays a very important role in society. It helps in giving information, news, entertainment, education, advertisements,
and awareness. For example, when we watch news on TV or scroll news on our phones, we are using mass media. It helps people
know what is happening around the world, what the government is doing, and even what new movies or songs are releasing.
In simple words, mass media connects people with society and the world. It is a powerful tool to inform and influence public opinion.
Mass Media is made of two words:
🟢 1. Mass
The word “Mass” means a large number of people.
It refers to the general public – like students, families, workers, villagers, city people – all people in society.
In simple words, “mass” means a big group or crowd of people.
🟢 2. Media
The word “Media” means a method or tool of communication.
It helps us to share or send messages, news, or information.
Examples of media are: TV, radio, newspaper, the internet, etc.
● Examples of Mass Media-
1. Television (TV) – (Shows news, serials, cartoons, educational programs to large audiences.
2. Newspaper – (Gives daily printed news, job ads, weather updates, and public notices.)
3. Radio – (Broadcasts music, news, and government messages using sound, useful even in rural areas.)
4. Films/Cinema – (Movies that provide entertainment and also give social messages.)
5. Internet – (A fast medium to send news, videos, and education through websites and apps.)
6. Mobile Apps – (Apps on smartphones used to read news, watch videos, and learn – like YouTube, news apps.)
7. Magazines – (Colorful printed books published weekly/monthly on education, hobbies, and general knowledge.)
● Functions of Mass Media
Mass media is a very important part of modern life. It helps us in many different ways. We use mass media every day to know what
is happening, to learn new things, to relax, and even to stay safe.
Mass media has many functions Such as-
1. Information Function
One of the most important functions of mass media is to give information. Media tells us what is happening around the world and in
our country, state, and city. It shares current events, facts, and updates.
🟢 Examples:
News about politics, elections, economy
Sports scores, weather forecasts
Natural disasters like floods, earthquakes, cyclones
Reports about health, education, and public events.
2. Education Function
Mass media is also used to educate people. It teaches students and adults. It spreads knowledge about health, science,
environment, and many other topics. Even people who cannot go to school can learn through media.
🟢 Examples:
Educational TV programs (like Discovery Channel, National Geographic)
YouTube videos that explain Maths, English, History, etc.
Health tips in newspapers and radio
Government awareness campaigns like "Beti Bachao Beti Padhao"
3. Entertainment Function
Media is also a big source of entertainment. It helps people relax and enjoy their free time. Entertainment reduces stress and
improves mental health. It also brings people together through music, movies, and stories.
🟢 Examples:
Films, serials, comedy shows, cartoons
Online games, music videos, dance competitions
Reality shows, dramas, and fun apps like YouTube and Instagram
4. Persuasion Function (To Influence People)
Mass media is also used to persuade or convince people. It tries to change our opinion or guide us to think or behave in a certain
way. This function is mostly used in advertising, marketing, and politics.
🟢 Examples:
Advertisements for soaps, clothes, phones, or food
Government ads like “Say No to Tobacco”, “Clean India”
Political speeches and party promotions on TV or social media
5. Socialization Function (Teaching Values)

Mass media teaches us how to live in society. It shows what is right or wrong, and what kind of behavior is good. It teaches moral
values, cultural traditions, and social customs.
🟢 Examples:
TV shows and movies that teach honesty, unity, kindness
News that shows the importance of respecting rules and law
Coverage of festivals, ceremonies, and historical events
6. Surveillance Function (To Watch and Warn)
Mass media acts like a watchdog. It keeps a close watch on society, government, and public events. It warns us about dangers and
problems. It tells us when something bad is happening, so we can stay alert and safe.
🟢 Examples:
Reports about crime, accidents, or corruption
Alerts about cyclones, earthquakes, diseases (like COVID-19)
Exposure of scams or wrong actions by leaders
