ENGINE, FUEL AND CONTROL, RELEASE OF NEW DESIGN SHAFT

SEAL FOR CECO MODEL MFP 263 and MFP 264 FUEL PUMP

This CEB transmits Chandler Evans Setvice Bulletin 73-l dated December 212. 1995 for incorporation as
directed by Allison.

1. PLANNING INFORMATION:

A. Effectivity:
This bulletin a,ffects Chandler Evans (CECO) Fuel Pumps Models MFP-263 (P/N
113300-OlAl). MFP-264-1 (PIN 11331WlAl) and MFP-264-2 (P/N 11332&01A1) installed
on all Allison Model 250 Series engines.

B. Reason:
To provide for modification of CECO Fuel Pump Models MFP-263. MFP-264-1 and
MFP-264-2 tmoincorporate an improved design main drive shaft seal.

C. Descriotion:

This bulletin provides instructions to change the Allison fuel pump part numbers to the following
new part numbers for the Chandler Evans fuel pumps:

(Part Number 113310-OlAl), and MFP-264-2 (Part Numbe’ 113320.OlAl) main fuel
pumps, as, used on the Allison model 250 series I through l’i/ engines

E. Reason:
To install an improved design main drive shaft seal.

C. Descriotio!>:
The work required by this serwce bulletin consists of the removal of a retaining ring and the
main drive shaft, shaft seal, packing and spring located behind it. An improved design shaft
seal together with a new spring, retaining ring and packing are then reassembled with the
drive shaft into the pump.

D. ComolianE:
Compliance should be effected at the earliest maintenance opportunity or upon discovery
of leakage from the drive shaft seal area.

E. Aoproval:
The technical aspects of this bulletin have been approved by the FAA per Allison DER

F. Manoower:
All work, with the exception of pump removal and installation, is to be performed by
Chandler Evans authorized personnel or a Chandler Evans authorized overhaul depot at no
cost to the customer. Approximately 1.0 man-hour is required to replace the shaft seal.

2. Accornolishment Instructions
m Refer to the appropriate Component Maintenance Mangal 73-10-08 (MFP-263 or MFP-
264.i/MFP-264.2), latest revision, when pertorming the procedures in this bulletin.

FOLLOW ALL CAUTIONS AND WARNINGS IDENTIFIED IN CMM 73-10-08,


LATEST REVISION, TO MAXIMIZE SAFETY AND HEALTH.

A. Disassembly of main drive shaft and shaft seal. (Refer to F,gure I, disassembly will be the
same for MFP-264.l/MFP-264-2, only the housing will be different from the one illustrated).

(1) .Supi>ort the pump on a solid surface with the end of the drive shaft (20) facing up.

(2) Place removal tool STD68028 over the main drive shaft (20) and onto the e%posed
back of the shaft seal (10).

CAUTION: DO NOT EXERT EXCESSIVE FORCE ON THE SHAFT SEAL (10) OR


DRIVE SHAFT (20). USE ONLY ENOUGH FORCE TO SEPARATE THE
SHAFT SEAL FROM THE RETAINING RING (5) TO PERMIT ITS
REMOVAL.

(3) Use the removal tool STD68028 to depress the shaft seal (lo), separating it from the
retailiing ring (5).

(4) Using a dental pick or similar tool, pry the retaining ring (5) from its groove in the
housing (35). Exercise care to not damage the housin#g surfaces. Remove and dis-
card the ring.

(5) Place the tips of two flat bladed screwdrivers behind the packing groove on the main
drive shaft (20) and pry it together with the shaft seal (10) from the bore in the main
housing (35). Use care not to damage the surfaces of the housing or the drive shaft
during this operation. Discard the shaft seal.

(6) Remove and discard the loading spring (25).

(7) Remove and discard the preformed packing (15)

B. Assembly of main drive shaft and new shaft seal. (Refer to Figure 1, assembly will be the
same for MFP-264-l/MFP-264-2, only the housing will be different from the one illustrated).

(1) Install a new preformed packing (15) into the packing groove in the housing (35),
Apply a thin film of white petrolatum to the packiq.

(2) Check to ensure that the loading spring seat (30) is aligned over the driver gear (40).
lf necessary, center the seat over the driver gear with its flange against the gear.
Place a new spring (25) over the seat.

(3) Install the drive shaft (20) by inserting the smaller spiine through the loading spring
(25) and seat (30). Carefully engage the spline of the shaft with that in the mating
driver gear (40).

GA’JTION: DO NOT EXERT EXCESSIVE FORCE ON THE SHAFT SEAL (10) OR


DRIVE SHAFT (20). USE ONLY ENOUGH FORCE TO INSTALL THE LEAD-
ING EDGE OF THE SHAFT SEAL PAST THE PREFORMED PACKING (15).

Install the shaft seal (10) over the drive shaft (20) and into the drive shaft bore of the
main housing (35), making sure that the carbon sealing surface is toward the pump
interior. Press the shaft seal into the bore until its leading edge has passed the pre-
formed packing (15).

Place the guide of the retaining ring installation tool, STD67949 (MFP-263) or
STD67969 (MFP-264-1, -2), over the drive shaft (20) and center it in the drive shaft
bore of the main housing (35). Carefully place a new retaining ring (5) over the drive
shaft and into the installation guide.

Place the plunger of the retaining ring and shaft seal installation tool over the drive
shaft (20) and onto retaining ring (5).

CAUTION: DO NOT EXERT EXCESSIVE FORCE ON THE SHAFT SEAL (10) OR


DRIVE SHAFT (20). USE ONLY ENOUGH FORCE TO INSTALL THE
RETAINING RING (5) INTO THE ASSOCIATED GROOVE IN THE MAIN
HOUSING (35).

(7) Use the plunger to press the retaining ring (5) into the drive shaft bore of the main
housing (35). Press the ring into the bore until it snaps into place in the groove in the
housing bore.

(8) Remove the plunger and guide of the retaining ring installation tool,

(I) Remove the two screws (5) and identification plate (1 O), Discard the old identification
plate.

(2) Using a marking method such as metal stamping, fill out a new identification plate (10)

vrce bulletin identification information shall be transferrl?d to the new identification
plate prior to installation, using a marking method such as hand scribing, vibro-etch-
ing, or metal stamping.
