A THING OF BEAUTY

-JOHN KEATS

ABOUT THE POEM AND ITS THEME:

“A Thing of Beauty” is an excerpt from John Keats poem “"Endymion: A Poetic
Romance", which is based on a Greek legend. Being a romantic poet, John Keats talks
about love, beauty and youth in this poem. In fact, the poem reflects his attitude
towards beauty. The poet believes that beauty is intransient and gives us the same
pleasure again and again. It provides us with eternal joy and never fades away. Beauty
plays a very important role in our lives and helps us to remain happy and joyful in this
sad, mundane world.
The central theme of the poem revolves around beauty in all its forms- Earthly beauty
and Spiritual beauty. He highlights the transformational, therapeutic and spiritual
impact of beauty on our lives. It has the ability to transform lives, disperse negativism
and dark thoughts. The poet describes how beauty can be found everywhere.

SUMMARY
A beautiful thing is a source of eternal joy. Its loveliness grows with the passage of
time and its impact never fades away. It is as soothing as a cool shade. It never passes
into nothingness. It gives us good health, sound sleep and mental peace. It provides
the beholder with tranquillity and solace. Man, and nature are inseparable. It is the
beauty of nature that keeps us attached to the earth. According to John Keats, the
things of beauty are like wreaths of beautiful flowers. We weave a flowery band every
day. Every morning brings new hope and offers, new joyous surprises with its beauty.
Hence, every morning, we wreath a garland of flowers and adorn ourselves with a
sparkle of joy and beauty of nature which invites us to the beauties of this earth.
Every person gets a bitter taste of sorrow, suffering and grief: hatred,
disappointments, misfortunes gives us mental and physical sufferings. It is the
beautiful things that remove the pall of sadness from our lives and make us happy and
hopeful.
All beautiful things of nature are a boon for human beings. The poet names several
beautiful things that are the simplest of things. These include the sun, the moon, trees
of all kind, both small and old that uplifts the spirit. Even the ordinary things like
sheep, daffodils, clear springs of water that quench the summer thirst or suddenly
chancing upon musk roses growing wild in the forest are things that give us eternal
joy and delight to the human good.
In addition to these lovely objects of nature, there are works of art and literature which
lifts our spirit. The glorious achievement of the mighty heroes are a great legacy
which is inspiring and they are, therefore, an endless source of joy. However, the poet
feels that nothing can surpass the beauties of nature. They are elixirs of life.
