How does studying Rizal's life and
works benefit nursing students
personally and professionally?
Dr. Jose P. Rizal, as a freedom fighter, an educator, and an advocate of science was also
distinguished for the inspiration he brings in the field of medicine. His life was deeply
intertwined with medicine, both as a motivator and a practice. Driven by the desire to cure his
mother's blindness, he pursued ophthalmology, becoming a skilled eye doctor. He honed his
skills in Europe, even assisting renowned ophthalmologists, and eventually performed successful
cataract surgery on his mother. Beyond his personal motivation, Rizal's medical knowledge and
skills were used for the benefit of others, particularly the less privileged. He established a clinic
in Dapitan and provided free medical services, demonstrating his commitment to public health.
Studying Rizal’s life and works teaches nursing students like me to develop a stronger moral
compass and a greater commitment to contributing positively to society. His literary works
reminds me to aspire for freedom, justice, and dignity. In addition to that, his life also taught me
the importance of resilience, courage, and perseverance in the face of adversity. Despite facing
numerous challenges and obstacles, he remained steadfast in his pursuit of justice, equality, and
national identity, which I believe sets a good example to us nursing students.
As what Prof. Fortunato T. de la Peña said in his welcome message last 30 December 2021 when
the country commemorated Dr. Jose P. Rizal’s 125th death anniversary and martyrdom “While
his contributions in fighting for our country’s independence are undeniable and well known, his
career in science also proves to be an admirable example for aspiring scientists, researchers, and
medical practitioners.”
In what way can Rizal’s values- such
as compassion, nationalism and
integrity- be applies in nursing
practice?
Jose Rizal's values of compassion, nationalism, and integrity can be directly applied to nursing
practice by fostering empathy, promoting patient advocacy, and upholding ethical
standards. Nurses can embody Rizal's compassion by showing genuine care and concern for their
patients, just as Rizal dedicated himself to helping the sick in Dapitan. Nationalism in a nursing
context can translate into a commitment to improving healthcare in the Philippines, advocating
for better access to care, and promoting health education. Finally, Rizal's integrity, particularly
his commitment to truth and justice, can guide nurses to practice ethically, maintain patient
confidentiality, and stand up against injustices in the healthcare system.
His life was a powerful example of how one person, through knowledge, compassion, and
unwavering dedication to others, can bring about meaningful change. Rizal was not just a patriot,
but also a doctor who used his skills to help those in need, regardless of their background. His
commitment to truth, education, and service reminds me that nursing is more than just a
profession—it is a calling to care for others with integrity and love for humanity.
As I prepare to enter the healthcare field, I see Rizal’s courage and compassion as guiding
principles. In a world where patients face not only physical pain but also emotional and social
struggles, I want to be a nurse who listens, understands, and stands up for their well-being.
Rizal’s nationalism teaches me to take pride in serving my fellow Filipinos, especially the
underserved and forgotten. His integrity reminds me to always act with honesty and fairness,
even in the face of challenges.
Reflect on how Rizal’s legacy, inspires
you as a future healthcare provider.
Dr. Jose Rizal's legacy in the medical field is significant, extending beyond his formal medical
training as an ophthalmologist. He dedicated his skills to serving the poor, even in remote areas,
and his work with patients, including his mother, highlighted his commitment to healing and his
pioneering approach to ophthalmology. Setting a standard and becoming our model, he inspires
me to become the best version of myself in order to provide the quality care the patients deserve.
His legacy inspires me to use my knowledge and skills not just for personal growth, but to make
a positive impact in the lives of others. Just as he used his talents to fight for justice and uplift the
nation, I hope to use mine to promote healing, hope, and dignity in healthcare.
