Writing Reflection
Based on my responses to the Directed Self-Placement (DSP) tool, the recommended
writing course for me is ENG 101 (Composition). I agree with this placement and
will be choosing ENG 101 when I register.
The self-assessment questions confirmed what I already knew about my writing
background—I have extensive experience with academic writing. I’ve written
multiple research-based essays over five pages, integrated various academic sources
into my work, and consistently applied proper citation practices to maintain academic
integrity. These habits are now second nature to me. I am confident in my ability to
read and analyze complex academic texts independently, develop strong responses,
and manage the full writing process on my own—from brainstorming to final
revision.
The materials provided in this evaluation, including the course descriptions and
sample assignments, helped me confirm that ENG 101 is the most appropriate fit for
my skills and goals. I am already comfortable with the types of assignments outlined
in the ENG 101 sample activities, such as rhetorical analysis, synthesis writing, and
research-based argumentation. I do not feel I need additional support or a co-requisite
course to succeed in this environment.
My decision is also informed by my previous educational and professional
experiences. I hold an advanced degree and have written for both academic and
professional audiences, including instructors, researchers, and the public. I have also
collaborated with peers on writing projects but generally prefer to work independently
and at my own pace. My experience locating, evaluating, and citing credible sources
—paired with my ability to plan and revise writing projects strategically—makes me
confident in my readiness for a college-level writing course without the need for
additional support structures.
In summary, I appreciate the opportunity to reflect on my writing skills through the
DSP tool. It was a useful and affirming process that helped me make an informed
course selection. I am fully prepared to enroll in ENG 101 and look forward to
continuing to develop my writing within a college context.
