Rocks

Rocks are dense, inorganic solids made up of minerals, classified into three types: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Igneous rocks form from the cooling of magma or lava, while sedimentary rocks are created from the accumulation of particles, and metamorphic rocks result from the transformation of existing rocks under heat and pressure. Each rock type has distinct characteristics, compositions, and examples such as basalt for igneous and marble for metamorphic.

GRADE -7 CHEMISTRY
ROCKS
Answer the following:
1) What is a rock?
A) A rock is a dense, inorganic solid, composed of minerals.

2) Name the three types of rocks.

A) There are three types of rocks:
a) Igneous Rocks
b) Sedimentary Rocks
c) Metamorphic Rocks

3) What is the chemical composition of rocks?

A) Rocks are composed of various compounds in different proportions by mass. The amounts of each
compound determine the qualities of the rock. SiO2 is found in sandstone; CaCO3 is found in limestone.

4) What are igneous rocks? Give examples.

A) Igneous rock is one of the three main rock types. Igneous rock is formed through the cooling and
solidification of magma or lava. Igneous rock may form with or without crystallization, either below the
surface as intrusive (plutonic) rocks or on the surface as extrusive (volcanic) rocks.
E.g., Basalt, Granite

5) What is the difference between sedimentary rocks and Metamorphic rocks.

Sedimentary rocks Metamorphic rocks
Sedimentary rocks are types of rock that are The metamorphic rocks make up a large part of
formed by the accumulation or deposition of the Earth’s crust and are classified by texture,
mineral or organic particles at Earth's surface. chemical and mineral assemblage.
These rocks are layered, brittle and light weight These rocks are heavy, hard and crystallised.
Sedimentary rocks are usually found in water Metamorphic rocks are found on the Earth’s
bodies (sea, oceans etc.) surface.
E.g., Sandstone, Limestone, Siltstone E.g., Marble, Marble, Quartzite
