Rhythmic movements can be inroads to physical well-being for students who


are not inclined toward competitive sports and games. Rhythmic movement
teaches students more about how to coordinate their body and develop specific
muscle groups.

Incorporating rhythmic movement activities into your PE class can really


help you diversify your curriculum and instruction. These activities can pull in
students who are less inclined toward other aspects of physical education.

Rhythm is the basis of music and dance. The purpose is to provide a variety of
fundamental movement experiences so the child can learn to move effectively
and efficiently and can develop a sense of Rhythm.

Dance, the movement of the body in a rhythmic way, usually to music and
within a given space, for the purpose of expressing an idea or emotion,
releasing energy, or simply taking delight in the movement itself.

Interpretative dance - a dance depicting a story or a definite emotion rather


than following an abstract pattern

-a form of modern dance in which the dancer's movements depict an


emotion or tell a story.

Contemporary dance - is a style of expressive dance that combines elements


of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet.

- is a genre of dance performance that developed during the mid-twentieth


century and has since grown to become one of the dominant genres for formally
trained dancers throughout the world, with particularly strong popularity in the
U.S. and Europe. Although originally informed by and borrowing from classical,
modern, and jazz styles, it has come to incorporate elements from many styles
of dance.

[2] Due to its technical similarities, it is often perceived to be closely related to


modern dance, ballet, and other classical concert dance styles.

Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid
dance movements.

Folk dance- a popular dance, considered as part of the tradition or custom of a


particular people.
The Philippines national dance is called Tinikling. This involves 2 people hitting,
beating, and sliding bamboo poles on the ground and towards one another in
synchronization with several dancers that step over and in between the poles in
the dance.

Ethnic dance - is simply a dance that is characteristic of a particular cultural


group.

Tribal dance - is a type of dance used to symbolize the origin of one's


connection with their culture. Every facet of society has a unique version of a
tribal dance.

Hip-hop dance - refers to street dance styles primarily performed to hip-hop


music or that have evolved as part of hip-hop culture.

Sometimes called "new style" and a hip-hop influenced style of jazz dance
called "jazz-funk". Classically trained dancers developed these studio styles
in order to create choreography from the hip-hop dances that were performed
on the street.

Tap dance -a dance performed wearing shoes fitted with metal taps,
characterized by rhythmical tapping of the toes and heels.

Tap dance - is an example of a non-partnered dance that is generally


choreographed, with one or more participating dancers. A rhythmical tapping
sound is attained by the dancer from the small metal plates on the dancer's
shoes. It is in his way that the dancer also becomes a percussive musician.

Dance drama - drama conveyed by dance movements sometimes


accompanied by dialogue.

Social dance - is a category of dances that have a social function and context.
Social dances are intended for participation rather than performance and can
be led and followed with relative ease. They are often danced merely to
socialize and for entertainment, though they may have ceremonial, competitive
and erotic functions.

Ballroom dance - is a set of partner dances, which are enjoyed both socially
and competitively around the world. Because of its performance and
entertainment aspects, ballroom dance is also widely enjoyed on stage, film,
and television. Ballroom dance may refer, at its widest definition, to almost any
recreational dance with a partner.

Ballroom dancing -formal social dancing in couples, popular as a recreation


and also as a competitive activity. The ballroom dance repertoire includes
dances developed from old European folk dances such as the waltz, Latin
American dances such as the tango, rumba, and cha-cha, and dances of 20th-
century origin such as the foxtrot and quickstep.

Dance Sport - is the activity that combines sport and dance, and that allows
the participants to improve physical fitness and mental well-being, to form social
relationships and to obtain results in competition at all levels.

Modern dance -a free, expressive style of dancing started in the early 20th
century as a reaction to classical ballet. In recent years it has included elements
not usually associated with dance, such as speech and film.

Modern dance is a form of dance which focuses on the serious expression of


inner emotions, using a free-flowing, interpretive style, rather than following the
rigid rules characteristic of many dance disciplines.

Rhythmic Activities the physical manifestation of an individual to rhythm,


these are activities which a person responds to physically, mentally, emotionally
and socially to music or any rhythmic accompaniment.

Rhythm is a measured motion or flow characterized by regular recurrence of


elements such as beats, sounds, accents and others.

Dancing is a means of expressing one’s emotions through movements


disciplined by rhythm. It came from a Greek word “Danson” which means to
stretch essentially, all dancing is made up of stretching.

Dance is movements set to music where there emerges organization, structure


and pattern.

Choreography is an art of arranging dance steps into a complete composition


of dance.

Creative Dance is the highest form of dance for the purpose of entertainment.
It is the product of exploration and improvisation of movements as the dancer or
choreography his feeling or emotions, ideas, and interpretations. This is a dance
with definite form, beginning and ending. The principles of art are all observed
in the composition of the dance.

Interpretative Dance are series of movements interpreted from the lyrics,


melody or tempo of a certain musical composition.

Dance Drama a theatrical form of dances using pantomime and mimetic.

Other Dances Ballroom Dances, Modern Dances, Square Dances, Tap Dances
and Sayawit.
Physical Manifestation is the utilization of the body to express the thoughts
and feelings.

Fundamental Rhythm these are combination of locomotor movements


structured and organized to form natural dances.

Rhythmic Interpretation these are activities where in the individual interprets


his own conception of the movement of:

a. Natural Imitation - clouds and swaying trees


b. Animal Imitation - birds, elephant, ducks, cat
c. Character Imitation - clowns
d. Mechanical Imitation - the walking doll, the clock and the train.
e. Activity - farming, cooking

Folk Dances these are traditional dances that expresses the thoughts, ideas
and feeling of a group of feeling.

- Is a cultural art form handed down from generation to generation. It


evolved naturally and spontaneously in connection with everyday activities
and experiences of the people who developed them. It depicts Filipino
costumes, beliefs, rituals and occupation of the people.

Other Dance Forms these includes dance mixers, jazz, modern dance, social and
ballroom dances.

RHYTHMIC MOVEMENTS SKILLS


 Fundamental Rhythm is an activity wherein the individual response
physically and emotionally to music or any rhythmic accompaniment. In
all nature, every individual makes rhythm like foot tapping, head
movement, body swaying while music is playing.

 Creative Rhythm are sometimes called fundamental rhythms or natural


dances. A creative rhythm is a product of exploration and improvisation
of movements as children learn to move the parts of their body and to use
them as instruments of expression.

 Lummi Sticks Routine is a dance using sticks.

 Square Dance is a dance for four couples arranged in a square, with one
couple on each side, facing the middle of the square.

OBJECTIVES OF RHYTHMIC ACTIVITIES

1. Develop a balanced and well-coordinated body.


2. For physiological and neuro-muscular development of the organic system
of the body.
3. Maintain good posture and physical efficiency.
4. Promote educational freedom.
5. Develop skills necessary for social and recreational enjoyment.
6. For culture of the people.
