Character Role in the story


Simoun  Crisostomo Ibarra in disguise, The
main character of the novel and a
wealthy jeweler.
Basilio  Confidential associate of simoun in his
plan that know the lightened lamp will
explode.
Isagani  A poet nephew of Padre Tolentino and
a lover of Paulita Gomez. He is the one
who sabotaged Simoun`s plans by
removing the lamp that contained
explosives and threw it in the waters.
Paulita Gomez  The girlfriend of Isagani and the niece
of Doña Victorina. She and Juanito
Pelaez are wed and she dump Isagani
believing that she will have no future if
she marries him. Simoun plans to give
a wedding gift in their wedding
ceremony.
Juanito Pelaez  He become Paula`s new boyfriend and
they eventually wed.
Quiroga  A Chinese businessman who dreamed
of being a consul for his country in the
Philippines. He hid Simoun`s weapons
inside his house.
Lieutenant Perez  Lieutenant Perez of Guardia civil and
the one who informs Padre Florentino
that he would come at eight o`clock
that night to arrest Simoun.
Padre Florentino  Isagani`s godfather and a secular
priest. As Simoun morally wounded

nearly raped Juli, causing the later to
commit suicide to escape.

holding a position in the government.
Padre Salvi  A thin Franciscan friar and a former
cura of San Diego.
Padre Irene  A kind friar who was a friend of the
filipino students.

the friars like that of Rizal`s father. In
desperation he becomes a bandit
chieftain named Matanglawin.
Juli  The sweetheart of Basilio, kills herself
rather than be dishonored by Padre
Camorra.

Filipino students in their movement to
have an academy where they could
learn Spanish.
Padre Millon  The bigoted Dominican friar-professor,
who teaches physics at the University
of Santo Tomas without scientific
experiments.

the poor method of instruction in the

Setting: Where the story happens?

The story happens in the Philippines during Spanish colonialism.

Plot: Summary of what happen in the story.

The novel begins on board the clumsy, roundish-shaped steamer Tabo. This steamer is
sailing upstream of Pasig from Manila to Laguna de Bay. Among the passenger were Simoun, the
rich jeweler. He smuggles arms across the country with the help of a rich Chinese merchant,
Quiroga. His first attempt to begin the armed uprising did not happen as the heartbroken Simoun
abruptly aborts his plan in order to mourn for Maria Clara`s death.
Juli, Basilio`s sweetheart and the daughter of Cabesang Tales tries to ask Father
Camorra`s help upon the advice of Hermana Bali. The two travel to the convent but during the
rendezvous, Padre Camorra tries to rape Juli due to his long desire for young women. Juli finding
herself trapped and being cornered by the friar, jumps from the convent`s window to her death.
Simoun tells Basilio about Juli`s ordeal with Padre Camorra and her suicide. Basilio`s decides to
join Simouns revolution. Simoun tells him the plan that at the wedding of Paulita Gomez and
Juanito Pelaez . Simoun plans to conceal an explosive charge of nitroglycerin inside a
pomegranatestyled kerosen lamp that Simoun will give to the newlyweds as a gift during the
reception where the wedding feast is going to be held killing all the guest including the governor
general, the friars and the government officials. As wedding feast begins, Basilio saw his friend
Isagani and warns him but upon hearing the horrible secret of the lamp, Isagani realize that his
beloved Paulita is in grave danger. So he rushes into the house, seize the lamp and throw it into
the river where it explodes. Simoun plan was discovered and he trapped by the Spanish soldier
but he escaped and sought refuge in the home of Padre Florentino. The Spanish learned that
Simoun is in the house of Padre Florentino. Lieutenant Perez sent a letter to Padre Florentino
stating that they will come exactly 8 o`clock that evening but Simoun take a poison and while he
is dying he confess everything to Padre Florentino.

Conflict: Major problem in the story.

The Major conflict in the story is the Spanish Government and how they treat Filipino in
those time.

Climax: The most exciting part of the story.

Simoun plans to conceal an explosive charge of nitroglycerin inside a pomegranatestyled


kerosen lamp that Simoun will give to the newlyweds as a gift during the reception where the
wedding feast is going to be held killing all the guest including the governor general, the friars
and the government officials.

End: How does the story ends?

Simoun drink a poison and confess his entire story to Padre Florentino before he pass
away and Padre pray for him.
