CHAPTER - I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background

A bank is a financial institution which deals with money, receiving it on deposit from Customer:
honoring customer's drawing against such deposit on demand, collecting cheques for customers
and lending or investing surplus deposits until they are required for payment. In the present days,
various types of banks are established, for Instance, industrial banks, commercial banks,
agriculture banks, joint venture banks, co-operative banks and developments banks, these banks
help financial market facilitate the flow of fund from surplus to deficit units.
Like all businesses, banks make profit by earning more money than what they pay I expenses.
Surendra.2013 has stated that "Profit is the reward of management of an organization. It is the
excess of revenue over cost". The major portion of a bank’s revenue comes from the fees that it
charges for its services and internet that it earns its assets. Its major expense is the interest paid
on its liabilities. The major assets of a bank are its loans to individuals. Businesses and other
organizations and treasury and other securities it makes Investment while its major liabilities
are its deposits and the money that it borrows, either from other banks or by selling commercial

paper in the money market.

Deposits in a Bank are of many types. Like saving bank account or deposit a/c. These are normal
deposit accounts where the account holder keeps his regular stream of money beyond his normal
day to day requirements on continuous basis. There is no limit on the amount to be deposited, but
some restrictions are applied for withdrawing the same. Then fixed deposit or term deposit
account is deposited only once for affixed term and as soon as it matures, after the expiry of the
stipulated term, gets his balance with interest, if any, back. It can be renewed again for a fixed
term as above. There is no limitation on the number of such deposit accounts one may open
separately or simultaneously with the same Banker. And recurring deposit or progressive deposit
account is opened with a view to deposit a fixed sum of money-regularly over a period of lime
and after the expiry of that period get back the aggregate of all amounts regularly deposited
along with profit earned there on.
1
People deposit their saving in trust of banks repay their deposits promptly when they demand for
it. If one bank fails to repay the deposited amount to the public then there will be run in another
banks and it leads to insolvency of the banks. So, as the regulator, supervisor and inspector NRB
always dictate the activities of the banks in the country. It checks its directives from time to time
in order to have fair competition between the banks and to safeguards the deposits of the public.
As number of banks in the country increase NRB has to be more active towards its regulative
and supervising role.

Commercial banks are the main source which motivates people to save their earnings. Bank
deals in accepting the saving of people in the form of deposit collection and invest it in the
productive area. They give the loan to the people against real and financial assets. They transfer
monetary sources from savers to users. In other words. They are intermediate between lender and
receiver of fund they mobilize the deposit or fund.
Development of the country, which deals in the process of canalizing the available resources in
the needed sectors. People keep their surplus money as deposits in the banks and hence banks
can provide such funds to finance the industrial activities in the form of loans and advances. It
shows the firm/institution past growth in sales and the level of development that it is going to
undertake in coming years. So, a careful analysis of credit lending procedure and recovery policy
enables a manager and concern people to evaluate relative strength and weakness of the firm in
relation to various aspect of film's credit lending procedure and recovery policy.

Furthermore, the profitability of commercial banks may also be affected by economic booms and
recessionary periods. In this circumstance, the varying economic conditions from one year to
another can also be expected to have an impact on the profitability of these institution.

area of the study so that the past studies, their conclusion and deficiencies may be known and
further research can be conducted. This chapter will help to check the chances of duplication in

Review of literature means reviewing research studies or other relevant propositions in related
area of the study so that all the past studies, their conclusions and deficiencies may be known and

solve the research problems systematically. The research methodology considers the logic behind
the methods used in the context or research study and explains why particular method or
technique is used. It also highlights about how the research problem has been defined. What data
have been collected, what method has been adopted. The methodology term can be defined as
the process through which certain things are to be calculated process wise. It includes collection
of data, analysis and interpretation. The purpose of the various data collection technique is to
purpose truth worthy evidence that is relevant to the need of the research being done.

1.6.1 Research design

To achieve the goal of the study has used the available data from the secondary as well as
primary source. Analytical as well as descriptive research design has been adopted to clarify the
situation through presentation and analysis if various data. Descriptive research is a type of
research that describes a population, situation, or phenomenon that is being studied. It focuses on

tabulated under different headings. Then they are compared with each other to interpret the
results. Such as coefficient of correlation between different variables has been used, which are
presented below: Mean, Coefficient of Correlation analysis (t); Coefficient of Variation (C.V),
Standard Deviation (S.D) and Simple table, bar diagram, Trend analysis, percentage, correlation
and regression. For the following ratio are: -

 Financial Tools
 Statistical Tools and Techniques

The statistical tools have been used in this study to achieve set up objective are as follows.

Arithmetic Mean

Arithmetic mean or average is the set of observation that present the entire data, its value lies
somewhere in between the extremes. For this reason and average is frequently referred to as a
measure of central tendency. It is denoted by X. Symbolically.

Mean (X) = Ex/N

Where Ex= Sum of all value of the variable x

N= Number of Observation

X= Variables involved

Standard Deviation

The measurement of the scatter necessary of the data from mass of figure in a Series able an
average is known as dispersion. The standard deviation measures the absolute dispersion. If the
amount of dispersion is greater than standard deviation is al« 2reater. The small standard
deviation means a high degree of uniformity observation well as homogeneity of a series and
vice-versa.

7
1.6.5 Coefficient of Correlation

Correlation analysis is the statistical tools that can be used to describe the degree t which one
variable is linearly related to another. The correlation coefficient measures the degree of
relationship between two sets of figures. In this study, correlation coefficient is used to determine
the relationship between different factors, as like as, dividend per share, earning per share and
market price per share. Correlation coefficient is must widely use in practice correlation can
either be positive or it can be negative
